thanks for your help. I did wear my dress and got compliments anyway, but now that I know better, I will make my next dress with satin or tulle!

Huge dresses were so complimentary to the aristocracy, especially the pampered southern belles of the Cotton Plantation South. Rebelicious!!

would it be acceptable to make a ball gown for this era using upholstery fabric?

What kind of upholstery fabric do you have? If its thick, I do not recommend to use it as balldress. At that time especially silk, satin and tulle were popular in balldresses. Woman should have been a fragile lily: especially young unmarried woman. Some balldresses themselves were made of so fragile fabrics that they could have been used only once. For older women thicker facric were suitable. Of course anyone could use any fabrics, but it it a different thing is it fashionable :)
