"...You don't know how hearts burn ...for love that can not live yet never dies...until you've faced each dawn with sleepless eyes...how could you know what love is..."
Quite frankly --he speaks to our hearts even now. An iconic musician -- unappreciated by those who owe their own style and fame to this great and unfortunately underappreciated mastter.
he speaks to me. didn't know i could fall in love with someone who is long gone. but i have. his voice is so soft yet so strong, and this song is such a strong refection on my own existence. amazing. absolutely amazing.
@alycat712 Sounds like you need to buy "Autum in New York" or "the original Quartet, Sextet and Septet with Russ Freeman" ALL chets recordings in the studio from 1953-1954. Great stuff!!!
LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!<3<3<3 - and I love chet baker, not many know about him singing - but I do think he was one of the greatest of jazz-singers - love he's vice, so full of expressions and colour - the colour of blue!!!!!!!!!
I simply love Chet Baker...He is by far my most favourite and beloved jazz-blues singer.I just adore him...His voice and his melodies just take me to places...
some people compare elliott smiths voice with chet`s...honestly, i cant reconstruct that...i mean, they are both musical geniuses and i adore them, but they both are totally different in vocal...or am i wrong?
wow...never heard of this guy till now.......im just letting this play in the background nd I feel so cool lol like i can take over the world if i was even bothered to.
You don’t know what love is Until you’ve learned the meaning of the blues Until you’ve loved a love you had to loose You don’t know what love is You don’t know how lips hurt Until you’ve kissed and had to pay the cost Until you’ve flipped you’re heart and you have lost You don’t know what love is Do you know how lost hearts fear The thought of reminiscing And how lips tasting of tears Loose the taste for kissing
I wish he had lived longer ,but what he accomplished is beyond words. This guy was jazz.. His voice, his style, his presence all together was astounding. It was as if he didn't have to work at it, he just had that feeling and it came out every time he sang or played a note. Thank you Chet, you are missed.
This song, "In my solitude" by Billy Holliday and Bill Strayhorn's "Lush life" as sung by Johnny Hartman are heart-wrenching. They are as beautiful as they are tragically painful.
great version.l I love Billie Holiday's version, also. It's interesting that this was written by Don Raye, who was best known for his boogie woogie music, many of which was written for the Andrews sisters. (Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, and Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Beat.)
@peptikon I know exactly how you feel...in 1992, I had a very emotional break-up and listened to this album almost daily for a couple of months. My inner-most feelings were recorded and put to music. sigh.
@peptikon I love Chet when Im feelin' melancholy.....hurting yet it feels good to hurt, does that make sense? Chet's music makes me think about past love lost. The guy is a genius.
@peptikon You Could Not Have Said That Last Line Any Better, "Chet Baker Heals Me And Destroys Me" Chet Baker Is Beyond Amazing & It's Truly Impossible To Not Feel Anything When You're Listening To Him...
@peptikon What a sweet beautiful story... I wish you both all the best. This is one of my favourite albums too. I can't help but sing along to it every time I listen to it.
@peptikon This is so beautifully told, I´m sure she will grow old with you too. And I can share these feelings with you, I am a very emotional man too. Also one of my best albums ever, a voice that makes me cry ... RIP Chet Baker, genius of Jazz.
Great version......he puts a lot of feeling into this....lovely ...Just thought that the word" lovely "is not really appropriate..."Kinda moody with deep feeling ".......Thanks Chet !!!
Chet certainly had his own singing and playing style, you can hear the heartache he was going through in his life in alot of his recordings. But many people said it added to the mystique of his performance. But what a sad way to go found dead outside some dossers hotel......... Dead. But the guy had a death wish, a bit like alot of the greats, But ' Chetty' took it to extremes. He was a bit of a dog to most people who came into close contact with him. Genius never the less. RIP Chett Baker.
-and how lips that taste of tears, lose their taste for kissing... Chet's lilting but resonant voice tenderly conveys the proper melancholy this song was written with/for. Poignantly delivered. thanks 4 posting. I enjoyed it...
What a beautiful version of this song! Nothing artificial or forced in his voice - Chet just sings and it rings true. This is my favorite version of this song by a singer/musician. And his trumpet playing flows as always.
I can´t understand how someone dislike this song. It´s so pure, so beautiful.
