is this all done in LLL-Assembly? I'm just trying to find a practical example of why this is so awesome (and understand it). Is this impressive because of how complex the break down is within the amount of memory that each instruction uses? I'd just like someone to explain/break this down at the basic level for me please. Thanks! (Learning about LLL/HLL/VLLL in class).
We have reached nerd-vana!!! Perfect testimony to the amount of wasted processor time and bloated code in modern machines, if the venerable 64 can perform these audio functions... Awesome video!!

@jeevespreston Can C64 handle 3840x1080 @ 32bpp with accelerated 3D graphics, terabytes of harddisk space, multichannel high quality sound, hundreds of threads, HD movies, etc. ? I don't think so.
@jpelczar No computer, PC or otherwise handles the processing load you specified (3840x1080, HD sound, whatever). That is, without specialized external hardware that's much more powerful bolted on them, in or out.
@jeevespreston although it did take 20 years of knowledge to put the demo together. I'm sure in 20 years our ghz machine will be putting out some crazyness.
@RABBIDGamfan Sure thing, yes I remember the SID chip. Not much different than today's army of support chips and expansion cards for the CPU. This was 1982, and the machine had a whopping 64K of memory. There is a reason this box had a 40% market share, it was a fantastic machine for the time and for the price!
I loved my C64, i sold my BMX and put the money towards buying one at xmas. It was 1984 and it was £200, just for the console. Then i had to by the tape deck and joystick just to play games! Back in the day people were pushing the C64 to the limits. They said it was incapable of producing replicating speech but i had a game called V8 and they made that speek, the game was shit though.
When i was a kid i spent hours learning ML and before i was 10 had what i needed to (poke) anything and hex noteation all. I bought and still have many c64 and 128 from the day. I said they are the only computer, then the pc came. After years(1994) of hearing pc is better, i guess i gave in. I still have ALL the cm stock, i knew in my soul cm was the only. I knew. Follow what you dream because it turns out to be true.
Cubase is and always has been a great production tool.. Logic is also good.. people who make music in their bedrooms have the advantage over recording studios who can be expencive.. however.. a great producer can be invaluable.. ie.. Brian Eno.. who has worked with everyone.. so a great production tool is useless without a great producer!!!
@jdm42397 You're watching a 25 year old computer do realtime audio processing effects. It's doing it with low fidelity, but it's doing a stupendous job. This is the demo scene, where programmers hack fantastic performance from ancient equipment.
@ThatReplyKid Commodore 64 has 64KB memory to contain a program. That's it. 64KB. It's hard to explain how little that is. Do you remember floppy disks? They hold 20 times as much. iPod shuffle? 40,000 times as much. And there was no such thing as an audio card. It's a single chip that makes all the sound. (think; the very 1st Mario Bros tune).
To be able to program something like this with so little memory is like painting an exact Mona Lisa replica on a baby's finger nail.
Hmmmmm...this Video over here makes me wonder what kind of things could the scene-musicians do with the Amiga in...let`s say...10-15 years. ;) lookin forward to it

This would have had no use in the real world if it was invented in the 80's because the big difference between this and the inventions created then were they were able to operate in way past 8-bit quality.
@barronjordan1 Yeah, it's not so much that it's useful. It's just the fact that it can be done. If this can be done on a c64, we are wasting WAY too much space in our code now.

@JustinKayes Thank you :) is it okay to say I'm with you know in terms of being blown.... away :P
notxursuperman 1 year ago
@JustinKayes I just skimmed the whitepaper and the memory size is indeed not the only problem.
Extract:
[...]So, the answer to the question "How much time do we
have?" is: 13 assembly instructions for calculating every new 8-bit
sample.[...]
That is after handing all the graphics, buffering/shuffling data to the SID (audio) chip and other necessities.
Impressive bag of tricks/cheats to make that work.
