  • Holy fuck. How do you do this shit on a c64?

  • I can't believe I missed this one! I am proud to be part of the C64 scene. (Jeroen Tel)

  • C64 is still alive! even quad core computers, commodore is still alive !! you cant say no to commodore, because he's still alive !!!

  • Oh My Lord!!! I can NOT believe what I see and hear!!! How on Earth you did this!?!?!?!? Still can`t believe!!! FANTASTIC!

  • That's "Toms Diner" by Suzanne Vega, isn't it?

  • Let me just pick my jaw up off the floor.

    Wow.

  • I'm an audio-nerd and a former Amiga assembly coder. This stuff is really amazing. I have NO IDEA how he does this.

  • (((: ! Holy CR@P ! :)))

  • This is f*** unbelievable! As a Cubase 5 user and as a c64-lover... Junge ist das geil! :D

  • Commodore makes it possible

  • It's really amazing that the C64 can exactly replicate the sound of a cheering crowd and a mumbling singer.

  • That's so freakin' awesome!!

  • The commodore 64 is pure magic

  • im really happy i grew up in the 80s!

  • Amazing

  • is this all done in LLL-Assembly? I'm just trying to find a practical example of why this is so awesome (and understand it). Is this impressive because of how complex the break down is within the amount of memory that each instruction uses? I'd just like someone to explain/break this down at the basic level for me please. Thanks! (Learning about LLL/HLL/VLLL in class).

  • nerds!!! xD

  • this is uber kewl!!!!!! im glad i get this ;)

  • i still have my comadore 64 and this was sick :) realy great work to all of you that done this :) truly a master piece :D

  • We have reached nerd-vana!!! Perfect testimony to the amount of wasted processor time and bloated code in modern machines, if the venerable 64 can perform these audio functions... Awesome video!!

  • @jpelczar: you just don't get it, do you?

  • @jpelczar No computer, PC or otherwise handles the processing load you specified (3840x1080, HD sound, whatever). That is, without specialized external hardware that's much more powerful bolted on them, in or out.

  • @jpelczar

    Remeber is techonlogy 1982 and...

I remember that only uses 1 MHz and 64 KB RAM. You can do that a PC? ummm. I do not think

  • @jeevespreston although it did take 20 years of knowledge to put the demo together. I'm sure in 20 years our ghz machine will be putting out some crazyness.

  • @jeevespreston Just remember that it had a lot of help from that SID chip and its army of coprocessors.

  • @RABBIDGamfan Sure thing, yes I remember the SID chip. Not much different than today's army of support chips and expansion cards for the CPU. This was 1982, and the machine had a whopping 64K of memory. There is a reason this box had a 40% market share, it was a fantastic machine for the time and for the price!

  • that is awesome, the last few seconds of the video are pretty cool too ;-)

  • Congratulation! Real Deal!! Luv C64 saw till death!!

  • C64 forever. Still kicking major ass even after 28 years.

  • C64 Forever. Still kicking major ass 28 years later.

  • I loved my C64, i sold my BMX and put the money towards buying one at xmas. It was 1984 and it was £200, just for the console. Then i had to by the tape deck and joystick just to play games! Back in the day people were pushing the C64 to the limits. They said it was incapable of producing replicating speech but i had a game called V8 and they made that speek, the game was shit though.

  • awww, beautiful!

  • if this can't find the Silver Surfer... who can!?!?

  • 3077 q4xf 4j4 d5f

  • When i was a kid i spent hours learning ML and before i was 10 had what i needed to (poke) anything and hex noteation all. I bought and still have many c64 and 128 from the day. I said they are the only computer, then the pc came. After years(1994) of hearing pc is better, i guess i gave in. I still have ALL the cm stock, i knew in my soul cm was the only. I knew. Follow what you dream because it turns out to be true.

  • Whats the song?

  • @gekko101 ....Susanne Vega - Tom's Diner ...it's a cool song..

  • It's magic ;):)

  • okay, time to watch the other X2010 vids. I`ve watched this over here the fifth (!) time

  • OH GOD; I`M A NERD - I LOVE THIS

  • Hey,

wir haben den Titel "Planlos" von Norman Sinn und Ryo gecovert und würden uns freuen, wenn du ihn dir anhörst und einen Kommentar hinterlässt.

    Gruß, musikausberlin.

  • What song is this?

  • @MrWrayn Susanne Vega - Tom's Diner

  • @sroSteg Thanks :-)

  • Comment removed

  • @MrWrayn

the song is Susanne vega - tom's diner

  • @MrWrayn

    It's a Suzanne Vega song!

  • i see no cake!!

  • i was chanting big Cahonés

  • Cubase is and always has been a great production tool.. Logic is also good.. people who make music in their bedrooms have the advantage over recording studios who can be expencive.. however.. a great producer can be invaluable.. ie.. Brian Eno.. who has worked with everyone.. so a great production tool is useless without a great producer!!!

  • OH, MY GOD! THAT'S SO AWESOME! I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS HAPPENING BUT WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  • thank god we now have FL Studio lol

  • lol, wtf. sorry but i have no idea what's going on.

  • i have no idea whats goin on????

  • @brignsc123 he programmed a c64 that says "brignsc123 is gay, and also a noob" in real time

  • what am i watching? is there something i can google to gain understanding of this...

  • @jdm42397 commodore 64 & cubase (separately)

  • @jdm42397 You're watching a 25 year old computer do realtime audio processing effects. It's doing it with low fidelity, but it's doing a stupendous job. This is the demo scene, where programmers hack fantastic performance from ancient equipment.

  • i am seriously impressed. very very nice!

  • 5 people developed the original Cubase.

  • Mahoney == master-wizard

  • awesome

  • I wonder what format the audio was in... 64K is pretty small even for compressed speech-only audio

  • Remember: 64 kByte of memory

  • yeah it sounds like shit,

  • Please someone explain to me why this is impressive.

  • @ThatReplyKid Commodore 64 has 64KB memory to contain a program. That's it. 64KB. It's hard to explain how little that is. Do you remember floppy disks? They hold 20 times as much. iPod shuffle? 40,000 times as much. And there was no such thing as an audio card. It's a single chip that makes all the sound. (think; the very 1st Mario Bros tune).

To be able to program something like this with so little memory is like painting an exact Mona Lisa replica on a baby's finger nail.

  • @JustinKayes Thank you :) is it okay to say I'm with you know in terms of being blown.... away :P

  • @JustinKayes I just skimmed the whitepaper and the memory size is indeed not the only problem.

    Extract:

[...]So, the answer to the question "How much time do we

have?" is: 13 assembly instructions for calculating every new 8-bit

    sample.[...]

That is after handing all the graphics, buffering/shuffling data to the SID (audio) chip and other necessities.

Impressive bag of tricks/cheats to make that work.

  • @JustinKayes Thanks, that is indeed impressive!

  • @JustinKayes no memory is problem here (when you write program in assembler) but processor power 1 MHz

  • Hmmmmm...this Video over here makes me wonder what kind of things could the scene-musicians do with the Amiga in...let`s say...10-15 years. ;) lookin forward to it

  • That's pretty freaking epic

  • astonishing piece of code!

  • I don't get this at all, why is this a big deal?

  • @djdogjuam who fuckin knows, nerds getting hardons for this shit though I can tell you that much

  • @djdogjuam people thought the commodore was only capable of producing beeps.

  • @BaileysBeads Yeah, because it is. The Atari was the superior sound and graphics hardware!

  • @djdogjuam It`s a damn old Computer. That`s like your 91 Years old Grandpa starts to Breakdance in highspeed right before your eyes. XD

  • Very cool. I really want to see this on an actual c64, hooked up to a good system.

If you're interested in making music on the c64, I highly recommend the MSSIAH cartridge.

  • wait till Crystal Castles gets a hold of this!

  • Wow.

  • unbelievable! now i'm looking forward to a real demo making use of this technology in the soundtrack. of course a music editor would be even better *wish* ;D

  • barronjordon1 Method, not just ingredients.8bit is used in the best commercial music by 1000s.The route to a great track is irrealivent to the result.

  • fake ....

  • @ar15expert hahahaha you can't be serious

    this is amazing

  • So whos gonna use this?

  • @Nooreazy Nobody. It's to show that amazing things can be done with impossibly few resources to use.

  • Hm maybe acid isn't good for me because i just saw a C64 do DSP :)

  • This would have had no use in the real world if it was invented in the 80's because the big difference between this and the inventions created then were they were able to operate in way past 8-bit quality.

  • @barronjordan1 and by inventions I mean music instrument inventions

  • @barronjordan1 oh i forgot to say..the demonstration was still pretty sweet

  • @barronjordan1 Yeah, it's not so much that it's useful. It's just the fact that it can be done. If this can be done on a c64, we are wasting WAY too much space in our code now.

  • awesome

  • It's Tom's Diner

  • WOW!!!!

This is amazing. Cheers to the author/creator.

  • RAD.

  • Whats so good about this, not trying to be a bastard just wondering why Im watching this and the crowd is so hyped.

  • @GLeNss

Because they said the C64 could never play sound

  • @GLeNss May not seem that impressive to do that with a computer today but this is with a 35 year old CPU and 64 kilobytes of RAM (less than that actually).

Had someone just told me about this i wouldn't have thought it was possible.

  • Holy shit. Now that's impressive. Wish I was there to applaud.

  • what was that song? i've heard it before. anybody know?

  • @Cles242 Tom's Diner by Suzanne Vega

  • Respect

  • what was pretty goddamned incredible

  • wow impressive

  • but can you still play larry the lounge lizard?

  • @CINEpocalypse ROFL

  • i love how people are cheering this thing on...god i want this so bad

  • friggin wow!

  • This is not your grandfather's C64 (:-). An amazing demo!

  • @sweisman actually this IS your grandfather's C64. It is just that the software is new.

  • @thkruege i was being sarcastic. i meant the software and how impressive it was. i'm 44, and i am (or would be) that grandfather (:-). i was an atari man myself (original 800), but the c64 had some great specs, and it was the hottest computer of the time.

  • male nerds cheering, so sweet!

  • @skywahery Its not unusual for nerds to be male.

  • We also technically achieved 64(?) simultaneous colors. It can do graphics, too. greets to my homies in ESI, FLT, FoD. Close call wasn't it, TK/KL?

  • Slaygon: Thank you so much for Slay Radio. Keeping the wonderful sound of C64 alive!

That aside, I wish everyone'd shut up so you can hear the demonstration properly.

  • @Sarstan watch video k4GWheE4Gkw if you want to hear it without crowd noise

  • ace!

  • good god...

  • I don't get it.... I feel young. :(

  • @Katami83 It's more a matter of understanding the technology. Age has nothing to do with it.

  • Retro.

    I like it!

  • Yewwwww!!

  • Why oh why did they demo this with a track that had so many pauses in it??

  • @vesenthraiy Susanne Vega is considered the mother of the MP3 because of the fidelity of her voice; It's only fitting.

  • o.O

Sorry gotta pick my jaw off the ground!

  • Amazing

  • this is unbelievable.
