This makes me cry! I keep playing it hoping that I will "get over it" but it's got something so haunting about it, it gets me every time! Thanks for posting.
According to Stevie, the Sylvia in the song and Sylvia Moy the song writer are not the same person. You gotta remember too, that in those early days Stevie was more into composing the music rather than the lyrics. That was Sylvia's job. Hank sorted out the arrangement.
YE HE WS IN LOVE WITH THAT SYLVIA CHIK AT THE LABLE HE WS ON OR SOME SHIT LIKE THAT N SHE WS OLDER THAN HIM OR SUMIN LIKE THAT INIT..I DNO MAN JS ENJOI THE MUSIC INIT
to my young friend in the neitherlands it is a lot of people who pass nthis music by cause they think this a lost thing but in a little while this will all be let of the music world to listen so keep on listen for sake ,so don't go close to the edge , friend up top
Thank you for posting this beautiful song! However, the single version which was the B-side of PLACE IN THE SUN I believe was a bit smoother without the background singers. If someone could do the comparison it might be interesting. I do not own the album version heard here.
The Sylvia that Stevie is referring to is Sylvia Moy, who was a Motown employee and also co-wrote songs with Stevie, whom he also happen to be smitten with at the time.
@MichiganMade I wish I could know her (sylvia moy's) reaction to hearing this song. I wonder if it was a surprise. This song touches me deeply and my name isn't even sylvia :)
wherever, whenever I want my brain to sing a song to my head, I go totally Stevie!

One of his best -- gorgeous melody, great arrangement, superb lead and backing vocals. The 60s were a special time.
