It's a cool show and it's fun but ...As good as Justin Derrico is, when you understand the skill level, and dexterity with which serious flamenco players play, there really isn’t much of a comparison. Flat pick shredding or double picking is one thing but Check out “La Barrosa” by Paco de Lucia… it’s insane!

my personal humble uneducated opinion though is while Farah & Strunz are more structured there is also an almost clinical approach / studio feel to it all and while their artistry is impeccable ...there is something to organic with flaws pimples and warts its real and twice as moving in some respects what Derrico does.. he brings a rock aspect to all he does..quite nicely too i might add

I wasn't talking about the origins of flamenco or where the Arab/Moorish guitar came from. I was speaking in terms of the present, in regards to Spanish Gypsy culture. These people have it in their blood it's undeniable. There are only few exceptions. Lenny Breau was one of those exceptions. I think gypsies get a bad wrap and don't get the credit they deserve for Spanish culture especially from some of there Spanish countrymen. Bigotry is still alive and wel in Espana.

Not true. Go ask a flamenco guitar player to play a kickass electric guitar solo like the one Justin Derrico plays on Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, for example. They most likely can't. Get my point? To be really good at flamenco you have to dedicated yourself almost exclusively at it for years, and of course people that grow around it do that. This guy most likely just learned what he knows out of a small curiosity and he's pretty good considering that.

I never said flamenco musicians were good blues or rock players, what are you talking about? I said the guy was good, its just not real flamenco. The E,F,G progression is relative, but its very Americanized. In this case he's using a capo and F#,G, A but the sequence is the same. Nice, but anyone can play this in three to five years with practice. You cant say the same about flamenco or jazz, for that, it takes decades to master.

But that's what i was saying... Flamenco musicians probably couldn't play a blues or rock solo because they've spent their time mastering flamenco. And it's the same with Justin Derrico playing flamenco, which i'm sure he hasn't spent enough time mastering. All i'm saying is that i don't agree with your first statement; gypsies grow among that culture so they learn from a young age, but anyone that is willing to dedicated years and decades to flamenco should be able to master it.

@Whispererinthenoise I am sure that i read an interview with him where he said Pink had wanted a flamenco style guitar interlude during a costume change, and Justin compsed this, having listened to that style of music for a week. He said that he IS NOT a flamenco player, as that is a special style that takes yeatrs to master. So you are right, but I think the key point is he never claimed to be a flamenco player, and in fact stated so. But he is still an awesome player.

In fact its technique is really difficult and takes serious dedication over years and years and years. The flamenco right-hand technique is one of the most difficult techniques in terms of music instruments. Just check Vicente Amigo, Paco de Lucía, Tomatito, Sabicas, Niño Josele, Manolo Sanlúcar... What this guy (Justin) is doing is just trying to emulate flamenco.
