  • syncopath live?

  • this guy epitomizes the adage "drumming is dancing sitting down"

  • he is a groove savant..

  • You know how they banned that special swimsuit Michael Phelps used to get all those gold medals? Well that technology was available to all the swimmers... with that being said, they should ban Jojo's one handed snare roll. It's just not fair to the rest of us...

  • keep driving on YEAH!!!

  • amazing, simplemente asombroso... me encanta este batero

  • i like drums

  • I like it, I will listen to it again !

    Chevere !

  • just like Butter smoote

  • gueeenisimo braaaaavoooooo

  • so so

    good

  • that is jungle kit... sonor jungle kit...

  • No it isn't. It's an Sq2, you can kind of see the logo at the bottom of the bass head.

  • one of my favourite drummers mainly because I get bored seeing so many drummers playing too much metal.

  • oh man tell me about it.

  • wow...he actually drops a stick! always my weakness...nice to see a pro do it...makes them seem a bit more "real"!!

  • But pros are always prepared for it.

  • very true...he has such a smooth recovery...something I need to work on!!

  • thats the GOD OF DRUMS!!!!!! words cant descirbe him

  • is his base drum 22 inches

it looks a little smaller than that

  • It's a 16 inches bass drum, from the Sonor Jungle Set-up.

  • This is just utterly ridiculous to watch. LOL...Jojo is brilliant, arguably the most technically advanced drummer alive at this point. Awesome video to watch.

  • woww a one hand solo, this guy is awesome

  • Jesus...he is just a fucking giant on a set...

  • er geht so krass ab alta! Nice Stuff

  • Tommy Igoe is an amazing drummer. To say he never "reached that level", is a little harsh. Tommy's just taken a different route than Dave or Vinnie. He's more about education, & teaching, than being on a million recordings. And there's nothing wrong with that.

  • SO well said, man. tommy's a beast...and in my opinion, i think he gives more attention to actual MUSICALITY. he addresses it more in his master classes and it comes through in his drumming more than many others. (i really DO love them all, though. :) )

  • Yo Yo Mayer is a legendary drummer.

  • People that bash his playing are already behind because they took time away from practicing by commenting on here. Go practice ;)

  • DAMN! chops man! check out the left hand all throughout, but particularly at 3:10 and 4:50. i love how after he drops the stick at the end, he just follows it up by layin down some serious licks. he is amazing.

  • check also the video @ "swiss beach 2008"

  • This guy is one of the best drummers of all time. Belongs in the pantheon with Weckl, Calaiuta, Rich, Porcaro, Williams, etc.

  • Porcaro, impressive! Great to see him get some respect, well done

  • this guy looks like scott henderson.

  • tommy igoe has lots of air.. his out of the list.. he never was.. He just tried hard but he never reached that level.. Let's put it this way.. Weckle, Gadd and Colauita are of the fusion genre. Tony, Pridgen and Moore are of the Gospel Genre while !st on the is Jojo, Rabb and Lang for DnB Genre.. Let's not mix them so we could choose if who's the best between all.. They are just so good that we can't beat them unless we are one of them..

  • Jo jo is becomng one if the five greatest drummers in the world along with dave W. Buddy rich, Tony R jr., and timmy Igoe.

  • Weckl and Rich are really legendary guys, but I mean, come on. Tony Royster? Tommy Igoe? Compared to Gadd, El Negro, Colaiuta, Minnemann, etc. those guys are amateurs, man... And in terms of influenceability, Rich, Gadd, Bonzo, Cobham and Peart must be in every list, period.

  • ok so he dropped 2 sticks but the real skill and showmanship comes from dropping the sticks but you would never know if you did not see him do it because the grove did not stop not even a bit...and that takes real skilz right there and not to get all flustered and mess up what you have goen on ....props for jojo..noe if not the all time break beat/DNB champ

  • simply awesome... !

  • MORE

  • Jo Jo is just so good. He's one of the most exciting drummers I've seen.

  • love this song

  • he's just imba. in a positive way.

  • It's a matter of taste. I happen to think Jojo sounds considerably better than Dave Weckl in every area except masturbatory jazz-fusion...

  • I'm sorry but I happen to think Dave Weckl sounds tedious for MOST parts when he plays, and I do not mean to take away the pride from his technical prowess. He's great that way, but musically, to me at least, JOJO sounds a lot better, and technically he is really good as well.

  • have you ever listened to drum n' bass?

  • The fundimental component in any groove is a backbeat. I've only just discovered Jojo, and he's definately building all his grooves around a backbeat. And I totally agree with asianfrenzy, you can't compare these drummers, totally different styles. Do you think Keith Moon ever played drum'bass?

  • if you don't think that jojo is about sound, groove, and concept, then you're deaf. you're pissing everyone off with your weird ignorant comments about music.

also, if you want us to look forwards, why do you keep look backwards to tony?

  • pale imitation of tony williams?

shameless pale imitation of bitches brew?

allan holdsworth/tony williams 1975 is fuzak?

wow, i really i thought i had already seen the most idiotic comments ever on youtube, until i read your post.

  • wooooooooooooooo JoJo got flow and groove!

  • Jojo Mayer has no feel ... probably the stupidst thing i ever heard... i think there is no second without him passing his feeling to the drums creating amazing shit

  • great feel...anyone who says his feel is messed is messed

  • jojo should team up with tom jenkinson.

  • For those newbies out there that just came across this link........f**k!!!! jojo is the one to emulate. He is the fusion between technique and feel. The definition of a master is someone who has studied all of the previous masters and knows them inside and out. Know jo.

  • Your a damn fool to say that Jojo doesn't have feel. And your also a damn fool to say that keith moon does have feel.

    Get a brain

  • I've seen alot of drummers, in my life. And this dude, HAS Feel. Whoa Bro, How you gunna say this dude doesn't have it. You can see it.

  • keith moon had feeling in his music. he is a pioneer of rock music, and a great musician too .

  • I think you're having a hard time actually hearing the music track he's playing to in the background (called "Syncopath). If you listen to the track itself with Jojo playing, you'll be able to hear and feel his "feel". This video has poor sound quality. It's smooth as butter.

Plus, you're comparing hard rock drummers with a drum n' bass/jazz drummer. You're trying to compare apples and oranges, friend.

  • Ahahah sure!

And Portnoy is a blastbeat master.

  • wow two sweet stick recoveries! awesome!

  • its a jazz with messed up beat..style of his own

  • man. dude drops a stick and doesn't miss a beat. too sick.

  • He is a style on his own. This man can drum whatever beat you want him to. Double bass grooves with only a single bass. Unbelievable!

  • woot i was back stage for this sitting like right behind him

  • WOW!

  • This was in Columbus, Ohio?

  • you are out of your mind.

  • thats what i was saying. they have completely different styles. i really like jojo's originality applied to drum & bass.

  • hmm, i don't think jojo and virgil sound anything alike. Their styles are polar opposites. virgil uses a double pedal and does work with ostinatos and independance and stuff; jojo throws ghosts notes and bass drum triplets underneath his right hand doing 16ths at 170bpm and does with one foot what most drummers cant do with 2. Personally, i like jojo's style and approach better, but it doesn't mean he's better or worse than donati; both of them blow me away

  • he plays so much better than virgil donati. because he actually uses good technique.

  • I ain't an expert but I believe that he plays a lot like Virgil Donati (which is good of course :).

  • So did I...He's really something

  • saw his clinic yesterday. fucking stunning.

i won a free "secret weapons for the modern drummer dvd" but havent had time to watch

  • BTW, the song is called Syncopath, he played it (better) at MD05. I'd put it in the description somewhere, but whatever.

Also he goes through a lot of sticks :D

  • I think sonikitty is a little confused. JoJo is one of the most unique drummers out there. I've been to one of his clinics, and let me tell you it is doing the opposite of reinforcing "in the box" thinking. He even discourages people to see how fast they can rip their rudiments with their feet and such and focus on the sound. He is imitating (as in copying) no one, he's a true pioneer.

  • there's also a bit of mike clark circa his herbie hancock days, but that may be sheer coincidence.

  • This guy obviously loves tony williams and what went before. You can hear it in his playing. Thats no bad thing. Come on.. i think even buddy would have loved this guy.

  • I'm confused....

First you knock it because it "takes from the past"

Then you knock us for not "listening to it in its original context"

Finally you tell everybody to "look forwards, not backwards".

  • Jojo imitating??? WTF ? Jojo is something brand new...

  • so tony willaims is one his people to look up to... since when did jojo become and imitator anyway

  • ha another think no it all you suck recognize greatness bitch

  • agree with u guys jojos sounds are rlyrly nice..but i would be carefull by saying its "best" or something like that cause there so much drummers out there and htey get more and more ;D ..for example check out dylan elise

  • or benny greb or KJ Sawka

  • checked out benny greb hes rly nice thx man ;D

  • Big Up to KJ

  • drum772 I couldn't agree with you more dude..Jojo has been my favorite drummer for a long time and as well as his incredible talent at playing, its his sound that blows me away!!

  • i think this guy has the best sound out there...easily my favorite drummer

  • is he doing a 2 timed and 3 timed compasses?

  • so flawless..and he played off the lost sticks soo well

  • It was a lot cooler at Modern Drummer '05. It's funner to see it performed with the actually keyboards and bass, Nakamura and Davis.

The computer just can't capture the energy.

  • i think his new dvd just simply demonstrates how technically advanced he is!!!!! i just gotta have it

  • the best "traditional" mind in the world , jojo you are the best

  • sooo cool

  • This song is Syncopath from Nerve...it' s a bit different in the keyboards but the groove is the same. Anyway I love his style

  • Fantastic the new buddy rich

  • Nice!

  • woooo!! increible hasta los dioses se equibocan! but........JOJO THE BEST!!!!

  • Had I not the seen the stick fly out (twice), I would have thought nothing had gone wrong. Jojo is something else.

    Woot!
