You know how they banned that special swimsuit Michael Phelps used to get all those gold medals? Well that technology was available to all the swimmers... with that being said, they should ban Jojo's one handed snare roll. It's just not fair to the rest of us...
This is just utterly ridiculous to watch. LOL...Jojo is brilliant, arguably the most technically advanced drummer alive at this point. Awesome video to watch.
Tommy Igoe is an amazing drummer. To say he never "reached that level", is a little harsh. Tommy's just taken a different route than Dave or Vinnie. He's more about education, & teaching, than being on a million recordings. And there's nothing wrong with that.
SO well said, man. tommy's a beast...and in my opinion, i think he gives more attention to actual MUSICALITY. he addresses it more in his master classes and it comes through in his drumming more than many others. (i really DO love them all, though. :) )
DAMN! chops man! check out the left hand all throughout, but particularly at 3:10 and 4:50. i love how after he drops the stick at the end, he just follows it up by layin down some serious licks. he is amazing.
tommy igoe has lots of air.. his out of the list.. he never was.. He just tried hard but he never reached that level.. Let's put it this way.. Weckle, Gadd and Colauita are of the fusion genre. Tony, Pridgen and Moore are of the Gospel Genre while !st on the is Jojo, Rabb and Lang for DnB Genre.. Let's not mix them so we could choose if who's the best between all.. They are just so good that we can't beat them unless we are one of them..
Weckl and Rich are really legendary guys, but I mean, come on. Tony Royster? Tommy Igoe? Compared to Gadd, El Negro, Colaiuta, Minnemann, etc. those guys are amateurs, man... And in terms of influenceability, Rich, Gadd, Bonzo, Cobham and Peart must be in every list, period.
ok so he dropped 2 sticks but the real skill and showmanship comes from dropping the sticks but you would never know if you did not see him do it because the grove did not stop not even a bit...and that takes real skilz right there and not to get all flustered and mess up what you have goen on ....props for jojo..noe if not the all time break beat/DNB champ

Jojo in undoubdtedly very good but just do a search in You Tube for Dave Weckl and you'll know how 'genius' differs' from 'very good. Sorry JO jo but you sound a little tedious in parts. Dave Weckl NEVER does.
I'm sorry but I happen to think Dave Weckl sounds tedious for MOST parts when he plays, and I do not mean to take away the pride from his technical prowess. He's great that way, but musically, to me at least, JOJO sounds a lot better, and technically he is really good as well.
The fundimental component in any groove is a backbeat. I've only just discovered Jojo, and he's definately building all his grooves around a backbeat. And I totally agree with asianfrenzy, you can't compare these drummers, totally different styles. Do you think Keith Moon ever played drum'bass?
if you don't think that jojo is about sound, groove, and concept, then you're deaf. you're pissing everyone off with your weird ignorant comments about music.
also, if you want us to look forwards, why do you keep look backwards to tony?
Jojo Mayer has no feel ... probably the stupidst thing i ever heard... i think there is no second without him passing his feeling to the drums creating amazing shit
For those newbies out there that just came across this link........f**k!!!! jojo is the one to emulate. He is the fusion between technique and feel. The definition of a master is someone who has studied all of the previous masters and knows them inside and out. Know jo.

i definatley would say he has mastered technique but he is far from feel. feel is just something tht very few ppl have bonzo and keith moon mastered feel and are part of the very few
I think you're having a hard time actually hearing the music track he's playing to in the background (called "Syncopath). If you listen to the track itself with Jojo playing, you'll be able to hear and feel his "feel". This video has poor sound quality. It's smooth as butter.
Plus, you're comparing hard rock drummers with a drum n' bass/jazz drummer. You're trying to compare apples and oranges, friend.
hmm, i don't think jojo and virgil sound anything alike. Their styles are polar opposites. virgil uses a double pedal and does work with ostinatos and independance and stuff; jojo throws ghosts notes and bass drum triplets underneath his right hand doing 16ths at 170bpm and does with one foot what most drummers cant do with 2. Personally, i like jojo's style and approach better, but it doesn't mean he's better or worse than donati; both of them blow me away
I think sonikitty is a little confused. JoJo is one of the most unique drummers out there. I've been to one of his clinics, and let me tell you it is doing the opposite of reinforcing "in the box" thinking. He even discourages people to see how fast they can rip their rudiments with their feet and such and focus on the sound. He is imitating (as in copying) no one, he's a true pioneer.
This guy obviously loves tony williams and what went before. You can hear it in his playing. Thats no bad thing. Come on.. i think even buddy would have loved this guy.
agree with u guys jojos sounds are rlyrly nice..but i would be carefull by saying its "best" or something like that cause there so much drummers out there and htey get more and more ;D ..for example check out dylan elise
