Guys, Fallout 1 and 2 were the best of the Fallout series. I think that New Vegas comes in third place for at least being related to the West Coast plotline of the originals. Fallout 3 was okay as a shooter/ RPG. but not a Fallout game, as it pertains to NOTHING in the original storyline besides the vaults, some of the factions, the enemies, and some weapons. I used to play Fallout 3 all the time, i admit, but then I got curious and played the originals. All I can say is "HO-LY FUCK!" Seriously.
If it weren't for the original two great games which are the Fallout legacy then fallout 3 would have never been. Truth is yeah it may be a First/Third person styled Roleplaying game but that doesn't mean it's perfect. Now to some this style game may get boring and hey you have your opinion it can be heard because others may agree but for the most part what fun is there in starting drama with true fans of the series? Fallout 1 was awesome except for the fact you had a time limit. Fallout 2 was even more kick ass cause you had the overall fun factor of the first game and took away the time limit about half way through the game. gave you time to explore. Fallout 3 was a really bad ass game, nice swing on a old franchise, it just came off as a little too much for me. i really liked the overhead RPG old school look the old ones had. still an awesome game though. all that other fallout stuff was crap though.

Fallout 1 and 2 are some of the ultimate RPGs ever made and forever will be, notably because we certainly won't see anymore games as deep, authentic, and raw (in opposition with those sterilized piece of sh*t we see nowadays), and there's no need to argue about that.
Fallout 3 is a masquerade, like Oblivion was for the Elder Scrolls series (except the fact that they were scoffing at their own license with this last...). Just a beautiful (but too polished and superficial even in the shape) sandbox. That's the "modern" way, no soul, no depths, sterilized products for stupid people...

Did you read the story for Van Buren? It was SHIT! I may be loyal to Black Ilse n everything, but come on! The gameplay may have been good and whatever but the story of a video game is very important. The Fallout 3 that would have been was just really lame. It was only because a lot of people were leaving Black Ilse so Interplay needed new developers. That's why Fo2 was so different from the first one with the gangster n hookers n such. Be thankful that Fallout 3 was ever made in the first place
And if it weren't for Bethesda willing to revive the franchise not only would it be dead and forgotten but they also gave a spotlight to the previous games. I agree that Fo3 is more of a spinoff than a sequel, especially after considering the previous stories. But like I said, Van Buren's story was also VERY unrelated and frankly sucked. I believe that the original developers that made Fo1 should have continued the series themselves. The series as a whole would be much better anyway.
I've enjoyed it, but only cos there's nothing better.. I dislike a lot in fallout 3. And they're pretty much the same things I dislike in oblivion. I had more fun with fallout 1 and 2. If you need examples; Compare weapons in 1,2,3. Compare skills and skill use in 1,2,3. There's a lot of good stuff in 3, but I personally found the first 2 better. I dont really want to play 3 anymore as it's just the same crap over and over again, no challenge, and no strategy, just grinding. Gets boring.
Dude Bethesda did to Fallout what they wanted to do. i think Fallout 3 appeals to alot more people. Shooter fans like it and fans of the orignals actually thought it was ok. So they expanded the playing range. Yes it has its bugs but a 90's PC game doesn't?

The original Fallout games were very rewarding, if you had the time to get into them, but I play Fallout 3 too, mostly because of its top notch graphics and scale. But I still play FO1 and FO2 on my laptop all the time! They're all great, and the people behind all of them are geniuses.

It's probably because Bethesda didn't try all that much, say what you want about "change" and how it's "better", but even as a standalone game Bethesda didn't do much more than slightly alter their incarnation of the GameByro engine for Fallout 3 after they finished up on Oblivion, it's entirely obvious since they have the same bugs, physics, flaws, and mediocre combat.
FO3 simply isn't polished, not to say that FO1 and 2 were, but FO3 is just worst case scenario in laziness.
Say what you will about it not changing much from Oblivion, but I still think it's a great game. Had people not played Oblivion before I would think a lot more people would agree. I'd say it's vastly improved over Oblivion too, the speech system isn't a stupid conversation pie, the physics have been really fixed, so things don't ragdoll an almost comical distance and it's insanely immersive. It may not be the same as the other FO's, but I think it's a worthy sequel
It's improved in some ways, but also worse in others. Oblivion at the very least had the idea of melee combat and bow and arrows, along with magic, to make the combat unique and interesting, its only real rival in that area was Dark Messiah and that game wasn't exactly very popular.
But Fallout 3 has incredibly subpar shooter combat, I can't help but feel that all I'm doing is exploring boring prefab cells while playing a messy shooter with VATS as a cushion.
Agree to disagree then I suppose. While it's no Rainbow Six for shooter combat, I think it makes up for it in the fact that shooting isn't the only part of the game. In rainbow or call of duty, the whole engine is designed the FPS combat. Since Fallout has more than just guns, they seem to have reached a healthy compromise.
Besides, I don't know about you, but if I lived in a post apocalyptic world I don't think I'd come out the other end as a skilled marksman lol.
Well, there IS more than just shooting in the game, but I wouldn't make the distinction that there's all that much more really, you are for the most part shooting things while walking around in dark prefab levels.
It wouldn't have been so much of an issue if they had worked on the dialog some more and altered the quests to be more expansive (and there for to be more of them) but you really do spend most of your time shooting.
Have you tried a melee/stealth character? It's pretty challenging and fun. I don't know, maybe it's because the game is so immersive, or maybe it's because the moral choices you make actually affect the game, but I'd consider Fallout one of the top games that have come out in the past few years.
A lot of others just seem like copypasted shooters and bland "horror" games
I consider myself a huge Fallout fan and yes, I've played it through three times (for each karma alignment) as pretty much every character. The problem is that with many characters I could max all my skills out if I just worked everything out right, it wasn't all that hard. So in the end it often felt like my characters just had slight changes between them, it really killed the replay value for me.
I think it's best compared to Ultima IX, which completely altered the series formula but hardly maintained any of the actual systems, you still saw regular Ultima elements, but they were simplified and didn't matter all that much.
Fallout 3 suffers from the same problem, it's not polished as far as mechanics go, you've got stats that don't mean much, the ability to max out your character and a low level cap which reveals Bethesda's inability to properly balance the game.

I agree, Fallout3 weapons are mostly garbage for any normal fps gamer.To make guns at least effective, you need to get your stats high, otherwise you will need to approach enemy within certain range or use quicksave-quickload buttons, while enemies can hit you through walls or from 200m even with crappy 10mm pistols.... And vats- this thing kill this game as fps game forever. It`s just an aimbot with godmode.
Comparing Fallout 3 with Fallout 1, 2 or even tactics, is like comparing Rambo 3 with Black Hawk Down or Tears of the Sun.
I've played little Fallout 3, nices graphics and everything, but I wont deny that I want random encounters, and not only two or bunch of mods, but something actually funny, like Godzilla's footprint or the Horsemen of Post-Apocalypse.
there is atleast 20-30 random encounters but they aren't really that good the only good ones are the firelance and the alien but thats not a random encounter just something they put in
bu to me they added those just so they could say it was your luck i hate luck no one really used luck in the other fallouts as much as bethesda there were enough good encounters but they didn't happen as often as they did in fallout 2 or1 i mean yea there were some good encounters but it just took too long to get a random encounter it makes me kinda mad how they werent as frequent
Luck in Fallout 1 and 2 was used mainly for Sniper perk. With 10 luck it gave you 100% for critical hit. You can find all random encounters in 1 and 2 with 1 or 2 points luck - tested (not apply to bugged rat encounter - for it you need patch)

Fort Constantine is hardly a replacement Army Depot, its not that big or interesting and it certainly doesn't have Skynet or a robot that could join you. The Alien "Encounter" isn't really an encounter seeing as its always in one place, I'd prefer a crashed whale any day.
That's very uninteresting once you've seen it once. I only ever used the MIRV once and its not very useful. The Sierra Army Depot has lots of guns. I found fallout 3 disappointing, it doesn't have the same atmosphere as the first two.

Thanks to guys like Panosl we get hundreds of gigabytes of textures in every game, and 99% of those lack one thing - THE PLOT! I mean, crap, every one's looking forward to the new FIFA and NFS every year, GTA and it's extensions every few years and a couple of others. This is what FPP-groupies have done to the market. FSAAx8 and other effects don't make the game worth playing and as F3 is a nice game, when considered as a sequel to a game like F2, it's just pathetic.

In F3, S.P.E.C.I.A.L. has such a limited bearing; drugs have rare addiction rates; and where in the world did jet (long distance imports?), and dogmeat come from (west coast ancestry?! right...). Oh, and it doesn't take a 40% big guns skill to aim a rocket launcher (they tended to miss alot in F2 =( )

Fallout 1 was awesome except for the fact you had a time limit. Fallout 2 was even more kick ass cause you had the overall fun factor of the first game and took away the time limit about half way through the game. gave you time to explore. Fallout 3 was a really bad ass game, nice swing on a old franchise, it just came off as a little too much for me. i really liked the overhead RPG old school look the old ones had. still an awesome game though. all that other fallout stuff was crap though.

I have to agree. I discovered fallout-3 first though - liked the concept, so got my hands on fallout1 and fallout2.
Fallout 1 and 2 are WAY better than fallout-3 with it's crippled oblivion engine where characters are like cutouts.

Did you read the story for Van Buren? It was SHIT! I may be loyal to Black Ilse n everything, but come on! The gameplay may have been good and whatever but the story of a video game is very important. The Fallout 3 that would have been was just really lame. It was only because a lot of people were leaving Black Ilse so Interplay needed new developers. That's why Fo2 was so different from the first one with the gangster n hookers n such. And if it weren't for Bethesda willing to revive the franchise not only would it be dead and forgotten but they also gave a spotlight to the previous games. I agree that Fo3 is more of a spinoff than a sequel, especially after considering the previous stories. But like I said, Van Buren's story was also VERY unrelated and frankly sucked. I believe that the original developers that made Fo1 should have continued the series themselves. The series as a whole would be much better anyway.

I've enjoyed it, but only cos there's nothing better.. I dislike a lot in fallout 3. And they're pretty much the same things I dislike in oblivion. I had more fun with fallout 1 and 2. If you need examples; Compare weapons in 1,2,3. Compare skills and skill use in 1,2,3. There's a lot of good stuff in 3, but I personally found the first 2 better. I dont really want to play 3 anymore as it's just the same crap over and over again, no challenge, and no strategy, just grinding. Gets boring.

It's probably because Bethesda didn't try all that much, say what you want about "change" and how it's "better", but even as a standalone game Bethesda didn't do much more than slightly alter their incarnation of the GameByro engine for Fallout 3 after they finished up on Oblivion, it's entirely obvious since they have the same bugs, physics, flaws, and mediocre combat.
FO3 simply isn't polished, not to say that FO1 and 2 were, but FO3 is just worst case scenario in laziness.

Say what you will about it not changing much from Oblivion, but I still think it's a great game. Had people not played Oblivion before I would think a lot more people would agree. I'd say it's vastly improved over Oblivion too, the speech system isn't a stupid conversation pie, the physics have been really fixed, so things don't ragdoll an almost comical distance and it's insanely immersive. It may not be the same as the other FO's, but I think it's a worthy sequel

It's improved in some ways, but also worse in others. Oblivion at the very least had the idea of melee combat and bow and arrows, along with magic, to make the combat unique and interesting, its only real rival in that area was Dark Messiah and that game wasn't exactly very popular.
But Fallout 3 has incredibly subpar shooter combat, I can't help but feel that all I'm doing is exploring boring prefab cells while playing a messy shooter with VATS as a cushion.

Agree to disagree then I suppose. While it's no Rainbow Six for shooter combat, I think it makes up for it in the fact that shooting isn't the only part of the game. In rainbow or call of duty, the whole engine is designed the FPS combat. Since Fallout has more than just guns, they seem to have reached a healthy compromise.
Besides, I don't know about you, but if I lived in a post apocalyptic world I don't think I'd come out the other end as a skilled marksman lol.

Well, there IS more than just shooting in the game, but I wouldn't make the distinction that there's all that much more really, you are for the most part shooting things while walking around in dark prefab levels.
It wouldn't have been so much of an issue if they had worked on the dialog some more and altered the quests to be more expansive (and there for to be more of them) but you really do spend most of your time shooting.

Have you tried a melee/stealth character? It's pretty challenging and fun. I don't know, maybe it's because the game is so immersive, or maybe it's because the moral choices you make actually affect the game, but I'd consider Fallout one of the top games that have come out in the past few years.
A lot of others just seem like copypasted shooters and bland "horror" games

I consider myself a huge Fallout fan and yes, I've played it through three times (for each karma alignment) as pretty much every character. The problem is that with many characters I could max all my skills out if I just worked everything out right, it wasn't all that hard. So in the end it often felt like my characters just had slight changes between them, it really killed the replay value for me.

I think it's best compared to Ultima IX, which completely altered the series formula but hardly maintained any of the actual systems, you still saw regular Ultima elements, but they were simplified and didn't matter all that much.
Fallout 3 suffers from the same problem, it's not polished as far as mechanics go, you've got stats that don't mean much, the ability to max out your character and a low level cap which reveals Bethesda's inability to properly balance the game.

I agree, Fallout3 weapons are mostly garbage for any normal fps gamer.To make guns at least effective, you need to get your stats high, otherwise you will need to approach enemy within certain range or use quicksave-quickload buttons, while enemies can hit you through walls or from 200m even with crappy 10mm pistols.... And vats- this thing kill this game as fps game forever. It`s just an aimbot with godmode.

Luck in Fallout 1 and 2 was used mainly for Sniper perk. With 10 luck it gave you 100% for critical hit. You can find all random encounters in 1 and 2 with 1 or 2 points luck - tested (not apply to bugged rat encounter - for it you need patch)

That's very uninteresting once you've seen it once. I only ever used the MIRV once and its not very useful. The Sierra Army Depot has lots of guns. I found fallout 3 disappointing, it doesn't have the same atmosphere as the first two.

Thanks to guys like Panosl we get hundreds of gigabytes of textures in every game, and 99% of those lack one thing - THE PLOT! I mean, crap, every one's looking forward to the new FIFA and NFS every year, GTA and it's extensions every few years and a couple of others. This is what FPP-groupies have done to the market. FSAAx8 and other effects don't make the game worth playing and as F3 is a nice game, when considered as a sequel to a game like F2, it's just pathetic.

well it doesn't mean that new games are lacking plot.I recently played "Dead space (2008)" and that is the first newest game i played in years.
I'm a hardcore rpg fan from snes through other consoles to pc, and mostly, old-school.
f1 & f2 i walkedthrough around 30 times altogether, believe me.
But that "Dead space" game (even though Fps) really cought my attention. I mean,hell,for instance,is a Resident Evil a shitty game by any means? RE4? New and awesome!I seriously enjoyed every bit of it.

In F3, S.P.E.C.I.A.L. has such a limited bearing; drugs have rare addiction rates; and where in the world did jet (long distance imports?), and dogmeat come from (west coast ancestry?! right...). Oh, and it doesn't take a 40% big guns skill to aim a rocket launcher (they tended to miss alot in F2 =( )
