Imagine if this movie had come out in Germany after the German distributors started putting Godzilla, Frankenstein, or King Kong in the title of every kaiju film:
so they used c02 for the atomic breath then, i like these kaijus and other tokusatsus, but it seemed it havent evolved much, with those ridiculous plot, science, sets and props, and the terrible sharp cheesy acting especially by the foreign extras
HELP !! i remember a movie where a guy gets stung by a scorpion, possibly on a boat, the scorpion may or may not have been glowing, but at some point some glowong stuff moves up a guys leg and kills him or whatever. all i remember was hat it was a japenese monster movie(dont know which monster),i would have seen it on a sunday monster movie matinee on tv. any ideas? its drivin me nuts
I gotten the dvd as well. I too was amazed on how many wires are shown. Overall, the movie was good. It starts off fairly slow but gets better later on. I also felt that is besides being a sci fi/ monster film, it had some horror elements that aren't in most Toho monster films.
'Toho's Crowning Achievement' they call it--and boy,are they ever RIGHT!This is a fabulous monster flick & great movie in general!Rodan was always one of my most favorite kaiju since childhood,& the original version is the best way to enjoy it(but then,ANY kaiju fan can tell you THAT,right?).Just like Godzilla, long live Rodan!
SONY will finally release MOTHRA, BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE, THE H-MAN and REBIRTH OF MOTHRA 3: KING GHIDORAH ATTACKS" on US DVD this summer!!!!! I've been waiting mainly for the first 3 on this list (especially BATTLE--it's all about Akira Ifukube's music)!!
Great movies! Actually, Masaru Sato scored H-Man. He was more of a jazz guy (loved Henry Mancini music) and got the chance to do some great nightclub scenes in H-Man (Bijo to ekitai ningen). Occasionally, Ifukube gets a little lazy (here's the next 32 bars - fresh from the copy machine). That's why Toho always drops Ifukube's music into trailers... it fits anywhere because he usually avoids composition that's directly interpretive of the screen action. But, I really admire his work, too.
Well, we finally GOT "Mothra", "Battle In Outer Space" and "H-Man" (part of Columbia's Ishiro Honda Toho box set), but no "Rebirth Of Mothra 3", yet. Also, its easy to see Masaru Sato in "H-Man"...
he's the one going to war on that baritone sax during the nightclub scenes and leading the band (he also did it in "Gigantis The Fire Monster"). Plus, that "stripper theme" was slinky as hell!!
A while ago, I downloaded a torrent of the Godzilla Showa Series, and it had a few extra films as well. Rodan was one of them, along with Dogora, War Of The Gargantuas, Matango, Frankenstein vs Baragon, The Mysterians, Space Amoeba and Mothra.
I've just watched Rodan and it is AWESOME! I probably like Godzilla more, but Rodan is almost equal with him. I love that unlike some of the other Toho monster films, Rodan is fast-paced and thrilling. Definatley worth buying! 5 stars!!
I also discovered that "Megaguirus" (from the 2000 "GODZILLA vs. MEGAGUIRUS")was NOT a NEW Toho creation in that film---
that creature made it's debut in 1957's "RODAN" as "Meganulon". (In the Japanese version, they are called such in the script, and are also mentioned as 'Dragonfly Nypmhs'.)
I love the fact you can see the wires on Rodan in the new DVD Double feature with War of the Gargantuas. Shows you how wonderful the print is and even with its flaws. I much prefer the American version though. It's more fast pace for me.
I was amazed when I saw the wires for the first time on the DVD as well(I guess NOTHING escapes DIGTAL REMASTERING). But, at the same time, when I look back at it, I'm still proud because Tsuburaya-sensei was ambitious enough to pull off the illusion back-in-the-day via 'suitamation'---and not thru the tedious process of stop-motion.
Also, hats off to Harou Nakajima-san for actually donning those bigass suits and doing those stunts. His RODAN is the most vicious.
Ha HA HAAA!!! But seriously, on the real side, DC (my Hometown!!) DOES need the Kaiju treatment. Like, we're down with aliens ("The Day The Earth Stood Still", "Earth VS. The Flying Saucers", WILL SMITH!!!!!!), so why not Godzilla, Rodan and maybe even Gamera paying us a visit? HELL, give us GUILLALA!!!!!! Imagine Majin marching down the Mall!! We NEED a monster to take a walk thru Da' Capitol!!! Hell Yea!!
Rodan is going to be release on DVD next month and it will be bundled with War of the Garanutuas and a new doctumnary by Classic Media for the price of 19.95.
Alot of the FX shots here looks unfinished compared to the film. And Kenji Sahara isn't a bad actor at all, it's hard to tell under a dubbed voice, but after seeing Space Amoeba, The Mysterians and this, he isn't a bad actor at all. QUite good actually. Either way, thank you childhood nostalgia and the poster of this trailer. So much happiness.
This is the most underrated Inshiro Honda flick, people always seem to bless the original Godzilla and the Gargantuas, but this flick goes right up there.
I agree. Rodan is arguably just as influential as Godzilla was. Even here in the States, this was considered by critics among the better of Toho's giant monster films.
long live radon. one of the greatest kaiju flicks!!!!!!!!!! the actors there are awesome. kenji sahara is one of the best toho actors of all time!!!!!!!!!
The Godzilla theme is in there because trailers are usually in theatres before the films are even finished, so studios use whatever stock music they have. If you watch a lot of trailers you will notice that the music is rarely the score to the actual film, as music is usually the last part of post-production work. To be fair also, both Rodan and Godzilla were scored by the great Ifukube!
I love this movie. It's one of my favorite Japanese monster movies. The early portions set inside the flooded mines with the Meganurons are effectively nightmarish even to this day.
Imagine if this movie had come out in Germany after the German distributors started putting Godzilla, Frankenstein, or King Kong in the title of every kaiju film:
"Frankenstein und die Dinosaurier Fledermäuse"
"King Kong geht in die Luft"
"Godzilla trinkt Red Bull"

I prefer to see it where the original language is spoken, I've had enough of those years as a kid hearing it dubbed.

I hope they release a DVD of this daikaiju someday, where we get both the original Japanese AND the U.S. version.
(The subtitled version is always cooler, and I won't buy a kaiju DVD any other way now!)

Well, I've heard Classic Media, the people behind the new Godzilla DVDs, are planning to release this along with War of the Gargantuas next year.
