this brought back some memories for me...i'm talking bout when i was six years old jamming to "i wanna be your lover" and Still waiting..thanks for this one!!
This so called documentary/expose would have been a whole hellof a lot better HAD PRINCE ACTUALLY BEEN INTERVIEWED AND SPOKE OF HIMSELF, CAREER, LIFE!!!!!! These commentators are annoying with facts that are LIES and plays down real reaction to Prince adn his music. They are also off in opinions of how his music was received, where it stood on the charts, how popular it was/is. I'll wait for UNSUNG to do a REAL INTERVIEW/EXPOSE...
"Prince ROGER Nelson?" If you're gonna do a documentary, wouldn't finding out what his actual name is kind of be important? His actual middle name is Rogers. His father was in a band called the Prince Rogers Trio, and named him after the band.
PRINCE: THE GREATEST PRODIGY IN ROCK HISTORY!!!. THE GLORY YEARS STILL CONTINUE WITH SUPERALBUMS LIKE 3121, PLANET EARTH, RAINBOW CHILDREN. MUSICOLOGY, 2010 AND LOTUSFLO3R!!!
MANYEK! Thank you again as always. You are the 'Prince' and royal archiver of music material.
This was a good piece that was flawed in some ways. To give short rift to the Controversy album is leave out a significant artistic statement in Prince's career as well the lack of comment on the Black Album. And the white-haired critic had some very narrow ideas mixed in with some insight.
Dez Dickerson's perspectives were excellent as well as David 'Z' Rivikin & others. Good documentary.
Great info, but to what purpose it serves! We, the true music consumers usually don't get involved in the analysis of NATURAL inspiration, but some times I am suckered in to it. My opinion is not important, just the fact that I was around to enjoy... Soundtrack to my life, and as it is. THANK YOU PRINCE, for the love of expression!
@genarocolunga you know what tho, what you just described "music consumers usually don't get involved in the analysis of NATURAL inspiration"...this is the reason the music industry and the corporate Whorror show is ruining our lives, because we SHOULD be involved. we SHOULD analyze and we should be listening and consuming with a little more presence of mind. this is what Prince has been promoting. Dont just take shit at face value or YOU WILL PAY dearly in the long run.
@genarocolunga Prince and a few artists like him in the desert that is the american shitmusic scene take the time to produce thoughtful sincere INVOLVING ART, they live it and breath it and will DIE FOR THEIR ART. Black artist. It's hard enough in this country & world being a black man. Prince has a lot courage & remained so through out his long career. Dealing with a lot of Haters. Critics & the public who judge him & don't even give him a chance cause they think they know him but they won't go any further then the cover. Prince has remained very silent when it comes 2 his private life & his politics. He's divulged a little info through the lyrics in his songs but that's it. Enjoy his music & calm down.
gay & doesn't talk about his sexuality publicly but he has in his music like songs like "Controversy". But people who criticize or judge Prince, give him a break & get off his back. He's an artist. And I'll repeat saying that I have Never heard Prince speak publicly against gays....Never. But I'll stand 2 be corrected if someone can tell me where Prince spoke publicly on air, TV, in the press, in books, or wherever against gays. I Love Prince's music & his courage as an artist, especially as a
Prince is a Performer & a Great Performer! His choice of clothing or costumes are just that. His performer costumes, he's performing so why do a lot of people constantly talk about Prince being Gay? And why does anybody care? I always knew Prince did or does not have a big gay following like say....Madonna. Of course, he's not white & not a woman also but nobody or very few people talk about MJ being gay & gays, like myself Love MJ but Prince gets static & hater backlash cause he says he's not
PRINCE'S HITS PERFORMED BY OTHER ARTISTS: I FEEL FOR YOU (SHAKA KAN), WHEN YOU WERE MINE (CINDY LOUPER), SUGAR WALLS (SHEENA EASTON), THE GLAMOROUS LIFE (SHEILA E.), LET'S PRETEND WE'RE MARRIED (TINA TURNER), LOVE SONG (MADONNA), MANIAC MONDAY (BANGLES), NOTHING COMPARES TO YOU (SINEAD O'CONNOR), KISS (TOM JONES), HOW COME YOU DON'T CALL ME ANYMORE (ALICIA KEYS), PRAY (M.C. "LOTUS FLOWER", "CRYSTAL BALL", 3121, "PLANET EARTH", "EXODUS", "SLAUGTHER HOUSE", 2010, "RAINBOW CHILDREN" AND MANY OTHERS ARE CLASSIC ALBUMS. THE SONG "DREAMER" IS AMAZING WITH ITS GUITAR SOLO: HIS BEST AFTER "WHEN DOVES CRY".

What is contradictory about "Prince" is that his look and style are that of a very flamboyant GAY man yet he recently spoke out against GAY marriage. Really? You want to capitalize on a look that we branded in the community yet deny our HUMAN RIGHTS? I discarded all of his cds after he made this incredibly STUPID statement. Yeah "IF I Were Your Girlfriend". What an absolute MORON.
@singlos1 I have too agree. He spent his whole career looking and acting like a gay man. He wore make-up and eyeliner, lace, blouses, etc. Alot of people thought he was gay when he first came out and afterwards. I remember working with a gay man who thought that Prince was gay but did not come out and say it, that he was ashamed of being a gay man and that he did not support the gay community. If a Prince song came on the radio the guy would go over and turn if off or turn the station, LOL
@singlos1 Hello friend, but where did U hear about Prince speaking against Gay marriage? I haven't heard him say anything about being gay or the gay community or anything in that vain. @diegosalesjp Lovesexy is a brilliantly produced and recorded album. It was the first album he actually created with his then new Paisley Park Studios in late '87, etc. There's a brilliance and power to the music, you just may need a better audio system or head/earphones, player or somethin'.
At the time, if you were choosing to go with Prince over NWA... the album was full of a spirituality that was contagious! You could feel a "rebirth" or an eclectic spirituality, uplifting, etc.
@jeannielovesrick62 Of course not, the documentary covers the salaciousness of a Prince he no longer is. Prince is a hardcore Jehovah Witness now, and tries to cover up the "nasty" "horny" Prince of his Warner Brothers years.
my names J-Hazard "the young doula", im from augusta, ga 19 years old. and i looooooooove to rap, i know ya'll have busy lives n have more important things to do, but if you love music with meaning, and hot lyics to match and dope production with the feel of all coast not just south, go to itunes and search "j-hazard" i just dropped my lp called "g.e.d" 1. cuz i got it to pursue this, 2. it also means "GRINDIN, EVERY, DAY" cop the whole joint, or just your favorites. my dreams are coming tru
This one is great, the sad thing of course, Prince didnt give permission for use of his music. He's sent out lawyer letters to certain other associates to stop talking about him...
Owen Husney was such a big part of starting Prince's career and I remember that Prince on Larry King in '99 or '00 said that Owen's name "escapes him at the time" - Prince said this. Now, I thought, how could you forget Owen's name... c'mon.
OMG I'M LITERALLY ALMOST IN TEARS...THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS..Hearing this insight about Prince, speaking to those who worked with him directly, Seeing and Hearing Dez Dickerson speak and expose who Prince was at that time...all of this is truly magnificent. And I thank you ever so much for posting.
Did I miss it or did they pretty much bypass the controversy album in about 30 seconds... and they are interveiwing Dez Dickerson and he doesn't even say why he left the band!
@RobotronZone Yeah, they skipped on many things, subjects, it sort of skipped the surface of his "glory years" which I call the Warner Brothers Years or Classic Prince. But they did have some key people, even Claire Fisher! - that were associates and they shared great stuff.
But there's more! No Sheila E. Probably bowed out of respect to Prince not approving the doc. Wendy & Lisa? The Revolution? They had Bobby Z.'s brother in it...? Susan Rogers? Coke? Jill... Tyka... Eric... WB execs.
cool documentary, I wish they could have included his 90's music, like Diamonds and Pearls, that was my fav prince song. But Manyek you did a good job uploading all these documentaries. I was born in 81 so it's good to see what happened pre 80's.
@romelled The "glory years" kid. Prince's glory years. The early part of the 90's were interesting and at times also brilliant, but I think the documentary producers probably said, lets stop at a high note - The Batman commercial/pop culture success.
Post WB is a whole other story, maybe a whole other documentary.
A lot of Paul Gambacinni's commentary is very irritating. Lovesexy having one good song in particular made me yell at the screen. If Paul is too one-dimensional to appreciate the utter genius of that album, that's his problem!
@eliarulli I found most of what he said was very accurate. He may be more partial to the more carnal qualities of the earlier Prince, maybe he came of age with Dirty Mind in NY or something. Lovesexy may have been too... religious-y even though it wasn't, it was spiritual so maybe thats why he's put off by it. You just need to do some background on Gambach so you know WHY he may have been put off... and it wasn't the cover...
i enjoyed this documentary the only drawback was the hate towards HIP HOP every rapper doesn't talk about homophobic stuff or bling that's BS ...Anyways Prince is most definitely that DUDE
@juniornlondock Gambachiccinochio mentioned homophobic for a reason. But he is right... terrible. I completely agree with his sentiment that it was just that. You chose - Prince or NWA. Real musicians or criminality?
@wendileona Why choosing NWA as an example? How about Talib kweli or common? so u mean to say that HIP HOP is only represented by NWA? ...please dont being narrow minded ... One artist doesn't define a whole genre ...n by the way NWA ...they werent criminals Ice cube makes BLOCKBUSTERS movies and Dr dre ..well your children probably ask u for BEATS by dre headphones for Xmas
@juniornlondock I dont want to get into it. But then, at that time, I'm referencing roughly '87, '88, thats what it was, not the ones you mentioned. You're defending a wrong but thats your thing. Gangstathugbangeraphiphop is a glorification of criminal based sub-culture, accepted, used for marketing wanna-be audiophile (look it up) equipment by corporations as ONE example of a wider big business, ie, entertainment, techcompanies, you name it, to use it to promote a new minstrelsy.
@juniornlondock Example - George Clinton protested against injustices through his music, not by glorifiying period criminality but in a creative, new way that was interesting, drew attention to a struggle and through his performances, music was cathartic. He didn't emulate, glorify criminality, it would be masochistic, self-oppressive, internalizing oppression. In a way, Clinton didn't allow through his thang to be used as a vehicle to oppress HIS PEOPLE. That was FUNK.
"We been doing this since Prince was the bomb, before he changed his name and started makin wack songs"- Big Pun. Tribute to this era in Prince's career.
I am shocked and very disappointed that there was almost no mention at all of Time, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Monte Moir, Morris, and the rest of that group of geniuses. This aspect of Prince was huge, something that he spawned and then released into the wild. If this doc was "unauthorized," why cut them out of the story??? Sure, he fired Lewis/Harris once, but I'll bet he's proud of them by now.
@organfreak Prince's whole WB era is full of amazing fascinating stuff of course! Yes, The Time! What he was doing with Vanity 6! The Rick James tour! Prince was so much at the time, that I think you'd have to fill up several DVDs with documentaries for almost each era during his WB years!
@Ledaballs I was wondering the same thing - YT makes you upload longer videos in 10-minute chunks, but somehow this video is 90 minutes in one chunk?! How is that possible. Cool doc , though!
This little yellow motherfucker is a fucking unacclaimed era. Take James Brown, Little Richard, Jimi Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stone, David Bowie, Smokey Robinson, Sam Cooke and throw that shit in a blender and pour out this over-talented, ass-kicking, hell of a performing maniac. Thank you for being part of my musical memories and some of the best live shows I've ever seen since the landing of the "Mothership". Thanks for posting this! PS........Dez, you have aged well my brother. Respect.
@mredline1 you can do a search at torrenthound for the term i-vault...it should have around 600+ mp3's in there of bootlegs, soundboards, and, yes, even the incidental music from the movie "Purple Rain". There's also some stuff in there that were recorded off of a portable cassette recorder as well.
@mredline1 There are albums that came out which feature Prince in a band before getting a record deal - look for "Minneapolis Genius", title for them, several releases.
@Echsentriq americans never think of anything outside their own country's borders - it never happens in these documentaries... 'the world' means the usa to these people.
it happens all the time on movie and tv DVD documentaries
do you realize that when you made that statement you became the very thing you criticized? it's humanly impossible for you to have watched EVERY documentary about American born musicians/bands, yet you say it "happens all the time".
your jealsouy is causing you to say some really ignorant and foolish things.
or it could also be just another case of reflection.
Who is talking about documentaries? If you're going to claim that 'no other major star had been out there', doing what Prince did, when bowie did it, among others, in the 70s and 60s, then you're just plain wrong - but america doesnt care, 'cause if it's not done in the US of A, then it doesnt count. Apparently.
Everybody is born with gifts...and Prince knew who and what he was early on!!! The melodies in his head that transformed to compositions were for him... exclusively!!! Prince is beyond genius...he's an illuminated body of musical light that most can only watch and listen to in total awe and disbelief!! this world will never see the likes of his kind again...one time around only!!!!
Very interesting. Can you imagine Maurice White's influence on Prince? Or how about Prince's influence on Tone, Toni, Tone. "Things are gettin crazay, i ain't wearing Paisley.
for me Little Red Corvette was always his worst song

And I thank you ever so much for posting.
jerseydimepiece 6 months ago
Did I miss it or did they pretty much bypass the controversy album in about 30 seconds... and they are interveiwing Dez Dickerson and he doesn't even say why he left the band!
RobotronZone 6 months ago

I was born in 81 so it's good to see what happened pre 80's.
romelled 7 months ago
@romelled The "glory years" kid. Prince's glory years. The early part of the 90's were interesting and at times also brilliant, but I think the documentary producers probably said, lets stop at a high note - The Batman commercial/pop culture success.
Post WB is a whole other story, maybe a whole other documentary.

Lovesexy is a classic.
apklimon 8 months ago
A lot of Paul Gambacinni's commentary is very irritating. Lovesexy having one good song in particular made me yell at the screen. If Paul is too one-dimensional to appreciate the utter genius of that album, that's his problem!
eliarulli 8 months ago
@eliarulli I found most of what he said was very accurate. He may be more partial to the more carnal qualities of the earlier Prince, maybe he came of age with Dirty Mind in NY or something. Lovesexy may have been too... religious-y even though it wasn't, it was spiritual so maybe thats why he's put off by it. You just need to do some background on Gambach so you know WHY he may have been put off... and it wasn't the cover...
wendileona 6 months ago
i enjoyed this documentary the only drawback was the hate towards HIP HOP every rapper doesn't talk about homophobic stuff or bling that's BS ...Anyways Prince is most definitely that DUDE
juniornlondock 8 months ago
@juniornlondock Gambachiccinochio mentioned homophobic for a reason. But he is right... terrible. I completely agree with his sentiment that it was just that. You chose - Prince or NWA. Real musicians or criminality?
wendileona 6 months ago
@wendileona Why choosing NWA as an example? How about Talib kweli or common? so u mean to say that HIP HOP is only represented by NWA? ...please dont being narrow minded ... One artist doesn't define a whole genre ...n by the way NWA ...they werent criminals Ice cube makes BLOCKBUSTERS movies and Dr dre ..well your children probably ask u for BEATS by dre headphones for Xmas
juniornlondock 6 months ago
@juniornlondock I dont want to get into it. But then, at that time, I'm referencing roughly '87, '88, thats what it was, not the ones you mentioned. You're defending a wrong but thats your thing. Gangstathugbangeraphiphop is a glorification of criminal based sub-culture, accepted, used for marketing wanna-be audiophile (look it up) equipment by corporations as ONE example of a wider big business, ie, entertainment, techcompanies, you name it, to use it to promote a new minstrelsy.

wendileona 6 months ago
@juniornlondock Example - George Clinton protested against injustices through his music, not by glorifiying period criminality but in a creative, new way that was interesting, drew attention to a struggle and through his performances, music was cathartic. He didn't emulate, glorify criminality, it would be masochistic, self-oppressive, internalizing oppression. In a way, Clinton didn't allow through his thang to be used as a vehicle to oppress HIS PEOPLE. That was FUNK.

erby1kabogey9 8 months ago
Fascinating documentary, thank you.
Sure, he fired Lewis/Harris once, but I'll bet he's proud of them by now.
organfreak 9 months ago
@organfreak Prince's whole WB era is full of amazing fascinating stuff of course! Yes, The Time! What he was doing with Vanity 6! The Rick James tour! Prince was so much at the time, that I think you'd have to fill up several DVDs with documentaries for almost each era during his WB years!
wendileona 6 months ago
is this the longest video on youtube?

This little yellow motherfucker is a fucking unacclaimed era. Take James Brown, Little Richard, Jimi Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stone, David Bowie, Smokey Robinson, Sam Cooke and throw that shit in a blender and pour out this over-talented, ass-kicking, hell of a performing maniac. Thank you for being part of my musical memories and some of the best live shows I've ever seen since the landing of the "Mothership". Thanks for posting this! PS........Dez, you have aged well my brother. Respect.

does anyone know where i can get prince's demo tracks before For You came out?
mredline1 9 months ago
@mredline1 you can do a search at torrenthound for the term i-vault...it should have around 600+ mp3's in there of bootlegs, soundboards, and, yes, even the incidental music from the movie "Purple Rain". There's also some stuff in there that were recorded off of a portable cassette recorder as well.
wolftiger 8 months ago
@mredline1 There are albums that came out which feature Prince in a band before getting a record deal - look for "Minneapolis Genius", title for them, several releases.

No major star had been that out there? uh.. David Bowie?
Echsentriq 11 months ago
@Echsentriq americans never think of anything outside their own country's borders - it never happens in these documentaries... 'the world' means the usa to these people.
it happens all the time on movie and tv DVD documentaries
hcvang 10 months ago
@hcvang
do you realize that when you made that statement you became the very thing you criticized? it's humanly impossible for you to have watched EVERY documentary about American born musicians/bands, yet you say it "happens all the time".
your jealsouy is causing you to say some really ignorant and foolish things.
or it could also be just another case of reflection.
kennyconga 10 months ago
@kennyconga
Apparently.
Gotta love Americans...
hcvang 10 months ago
@Echsentriq Yeah, at 24:22 buddy get's it wrong without mentioning Bowie...
mandaladouble 10 months ago
Everybody is born with gifts...and Prince knew who and what he was early on!!! The melodies in his head that transformed to compositions were for him... exclusively!!! Prince is beyond genius...he's an illuminated body of musical light that most can only watch and listen to in total awe and disbelief!! this world will never see the likes of his kind again...one time around only!!!!
