  • Great instructional video. I'm a rank amateur when it come to mechanics, and even with a more complicated housing, your video allowed me to make short work of replacing the cord. Thanks!

  • @tismo70 thanks for watching

  • Thanks a lot for this video. It helped me get the job done. One thing I did different was to wind up the holder, then string the rope through and tie it, then let the holder go. It wound up the rope with no problem.

Any how, thanks again. Worked like a charm.

  • You should wear safety glass's when messing with recoil spring some times

they fly out and might hit you in the eye

  • even easier is to just leave the recoil together, wind it all the way up and put the rope through. tie a knot, let it recoil, and you're done!

  • Yo,Donyboy ... went to sell a used mower and the pull cord snapped on me. Watched your vid and got this thing going in less than 30 minutes! Thanks man!

  • @BocephusMaguire wow, you're getting good!

  • what is with the tecumseh rope?........a staple stuck thru plastic on the rope holder....did you ever see a design that way......almost need a air stapler to replace it,after you feed it through, or.....cut off the hunk of plastic and tie a knot in the rope????

  • @jeepers2655 YEA I know they are a pain

  • @donyboy73 good vid tricky job there

  • @donyboy73 grand wee motor . the briggs and straton

  • @Liamautomechanic yea for sure, do u have those engines there?

  • @donyboy73 aye very popular in ireland, my own is a briggs 5.5 horse very easy to start. reliable

  • i have a 11hp Briggs that has a electric stater problem . the starter spins but it will not turn the motor

  • @tractor6759 might need a new starter gear

  • I bought a brand new carb for 35.00 for a stihl fs46 trimmer wich i think is a better deal than to rebuilding it that would of costing 25.00 so for a extra 10.00 buy a new one

  • @TrackEmDownKennels good deal, where di u buy it, here they are over $50

  • @donyboy73 here in st.louis mo my local lawnmower reair shop Brand new for $37.47 with tax

  • Thanks Don, for another easy to follow video.

  • @testlablive you're welcome

  • @conflustered i just use a wire brush, sandpaper then primer and then paint

  • great video as always .

  • @tiremanb thank you

  • Great job Don!

  • @BocephusMaguire thank you sir

  • I did the same job today but on a john deere self-propelled lawnmower

  • i dont have 3.5 i have 4.0

  • @TheDudefromestonia its the same as the 3.5...just unscrew the plastic cover then completely same

  • Another one of your great very helpful videos!!

    Thanks and keep them coming.

    Tim

  • little burnt bud lol?

  • @camden199 lol, a redneck burn, u should see my shoulders, and there are white stripes

  • good stuff

  • Another excellent video, thanks, that's a different kind of recoil mechanism than the really old ones I am familiar with so good to learn!

BTW, do you ever put any lube, oil, anti-seize or whatever on bolts going into aluminum?

  • @richardwernst yes sometimes i do

  • @richardwernst I believe this is an old model too, newer ones don't have plastic pawls, modern 3,5 recoils are installed in conjunction with a ball starter clutch. from 5hp onwards they have metal pawls and a bowl over the flywheel

  • @conflustered A wire cup-brush on a drill will work fine for removing surface rust. I used rustoleum brand paint after removing the loose rust. It binds with the rust left on the metal and prevents new rust from forming. Make sure not to paint the exhaust or it will burn off.

  • The oil you're putting on the rachet assemly: Make sure to use a non petroleum based oil, like lithium or silicon. If you use a petroleum based lubricant, it will degrade the plastic parts and cause more problems down the road.

Same thing with the safety level/throttle cables. They have a plastic sleeve so don't use a lubricant that will degrade the plastic lining and gum up the cable.

  • Great video. Perhaps the most common lawn mower repair...

  • Donyboy that was a perfect video man. Can you do a detail explanation of the working of a carburetor and what all those holes do.

  • I think my recoil spring needs tightened. Cause the handle will hang out about 3 inches after you start the lawn mower and the recoil will be catching while the engine is running for about a minute then the handle is all the way inside.

  • great video dony, when i get mowers in with broken strings, i usually replace the whole starter assembly, just because its easier and i have used ones in stock most of the time, but now since i saw this video i might try to repair one this way. thanks again keep up the good work.

  • @snaponjohn100 thanks John

  • dony have you ever used a ultrasonic cleaner on a carb? Do they work? It looks like it would save a lot of time.

  • hey dony great video can u please make a video on how to replace one of those coil springs in one of those pull starters
