A cruel trick was played at both cities. US bombers overflew the cities ahead of the bomb drop. The idea was to explode the bombs after the population got the all clear and come out of their shelters in order to maximise the number of casualties.
If they were genuine military targets why were the never attacked before? Every other city was.

The bombings were part of a bigger picture and I beleive it was a myth that they stopped the war and they only make sense in the context of the position the Soviets were in at that time to occupy Western Europe and parts of the ME. There is also the racist aspect, if the bombs were ready a year earlier would they have been so quick to use them on German cities? For several reasons definitely not.

One of the great mythes of history is that destroying a city can win a war. If they had nuked a couple of German cities the war would still have gone on. They never used them on Tokyo or Osaka for cultural reasons and they had their eyes on future allies so would never have used them on Germany.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki has two purposes, to test two different types of nuclear bomb on real cities and warn Stalin to keep his promises made at Potdam.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki were about the only two cities not hit in the mass bombing raids tha went on in the final months of the war. They were earmarked for nuclear testing maybe a year before and America was desperate that the war did not end before the bombs were made and delivered.
In terms of acreage destryed and lives lost Hiroshima was only the 4th worst in Japan. Nagasaki was the 5th. They did not surrender because of the bombs, they did so because Russia was about to open a second front and attack.
London, Berlin, Dresdon showed that wars are not won by attacking cities. The Japanese war machine was not in cities and could have fought on no matter how many nukes were used.

A cruel trick was played at both cities. US bombers overflew the cities ahead of the bomb drop. The idea was to explode the bombs after the population got the all clear and come out of their shelters in order to maximise the number of casualties.
If they were genuine military targets why were the never attacked before? Every other city was.

The bombings were part of a bigger picture and I beleive it was a myth that they stopped the war and they only make sense in the context of the position the Soviets were in at that time to occupy Western Europe and parts of the ME. There is also the racist aspect, if the bombs were ready a year earlier would they have been so quick to use them on German cities? For several reasons definitely not.

The allied bombing of Tokyo alone probably killed more than the two nuclear bombings conbined. Using the weapon in Europe was never politicaly acceptable. The fact was that if Stalin broke his agreements and chose tp push on and take all the terrotories occupied by the Germans the Allies would not have been able to stop them and nuking Japan was the only ace card they had to play. The myth about the bombings ending the war was necessary.

One of the great mythes of history is that destroying a city can win a war. If they had nuked a couple of German cities the war would still have gone on. They never used them on Tokyo or Osaka for cultural reasons and they had their eyes on future allies so would never have used them on Germany.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki has two purposes, to test two different types of nuclear bomb on real cities and warn Stalin to keep his promises made at Potdam.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki were about the only two cities not hit in the mass bombing raids tha went on in the final months of the war. They were earmarked for nuclear testing maybe a year before and America was desperate that the war did not end before the bombs were made and delivered.
Nagasaki bomb had never even been tested.

In terms of acreage destryed and lives lost Hiroshima was only the 4th worst in Japan. Nagasaki was the 5th. They did not surrender because of the bombs, they did so because Russia was about to open a second front and attack.
London, Berlin, Dresdon showed that wars are not won by attacking cities. The Japanese war machine was not in cities and could have fought on no matter how many nukes were used.

@WPRR1 Again, what did the women and children have to do with it that were blown up for no reason? When the Japanese attacked the US it was the military/navy that were targeted, the Bomb the US dropped was targeted at every single Japanese in those cities, the majority were civilians..

Also history books mostly sugar coat USA's war crimes in a lot of cases, and if you want to talk about raping and butchering you should look at what the US soldiers have done in the Afghan war. They've raped women, butchered entire families at weddings because of 2 suspected insurgents attending and killed/humiliated iraqi prisoners.. So US should get nuked for actions of a few?

Just the fact that we can even come to a conclusion that this atomic bomb saved lives is just disgusting. I'm not saying that it isn't true, I honestly believe that was the case, and that if the occasion arose, he should do it all over again. It's just a damn shame things got so bad. There were 43,000 Japanese soldiers in Hiroshima (the headquarters of the Japanese 2nd General Army under Field Marshal Hata) & 20,000 died in the bombing. Had the war continued to the end of '45 MILLIONS would have died in blockade and/or invasion.
Try to find ANYONE who served in the Pacific who did not regard the atomic bomb as a Godsend
