Including Vukovich, 16 of the 35 drivers in this race (2 relief drivers) were killed in autoracing accidents, including the top 5 finishers, Sweikert, Bettenhausen, Davies, Thomson & Faulkner, pole winners Jerry Hoyt & Pat O'Connor & future winner Jimmy Bryan. They were real men in those days. Take a look at Bryan when he gets out of the car. Racing in a T-shirt, when he drops from the race he kicks the car & lights a big stogie. The drivers nowadays seem more like lab technicians than drivers.
