As much as I love these movies, they give very innumerate portrayals of how battles are fought.
Unsupported cavalry, what are doing? 200,000 enemies standing still would eventually break that charge. I mean 6000 is a lot of cav but it can't make it through 200,000, even if they are orcs. Physics doesn't let you do that. That and the fact that every battle was one blob attacking the other blob. Absolutely no flanking or maneuvering.
@SupaTROopa2 The books were better, Tolkien actually describes the bulk of the Rohirrim tactic rather than it just being a glorious death-charge into the fray.
I thank goodness that the scene with Gandalf and the King Witch of Angmar was deleted in the movie...it sucks. Gandalf will never had his staff broken by such vile creature nor Tolkien will have ever accepted the idea.
i wish i could take this back in time and show tolkien in his later years, let him know that what he created would echo outwards, giving people light and hope and joy.
@MarcoPolansky Actually, ancient kings used to do this A LOT. For example, even though actually King of Macedon, Alexander the Great became a powerful Imperator. He was notorious for riding at the tip of his companion cavalry bodyguard - they rode in wedge formations to smash open Persian infantry formations initially eg Battle of Gaugamela. He was the bravest bastard of his day. His generals begged him to not put him self in such obvious risk (or wear bright capes etc) but he just did it.
@Lumenpraebeo Oh, in which case Carrhae, Cannae, Trebia, Ticinus, Trasimine, Teutoburg, Andrianople and many others, would surely be Roman victories...and at that easy ones. right? No. All Roman DEFEATS. The Romans were damned good, but certainly not invincible. The myth of Roman omnipotence is widespread. They failed for a reason in the end; they were too weak to defend themselves, even with dozens of legions. The phalanxes of Alexander were outdated by the time of Augustus I would say. Still.
@ThePalaeontologist irrelevant, they still lasted the longest and achieved the most. Defeats mean nothing on the face of all that the romans were capable of doing and did. My point was that although alexander was a proper general, the romans beat them. Why?
@Lumenpraebeo Again, incorrect. The empire collapsed after about 500 years, yes, but this achievement was more the achievement of successive generations of Romanisation. Look at North Africa, in places like Timgad. Huge roman cities home to the 3rd biggest amphitheatre they ever built...but many classical historians and archaeologists argue it was the romans whom became more Africanised than anything else, ironically. I did Classical Civilisation at College amongst other things btw...oh and...
@Lumenpraebeo ...Rome beat Alexander's Macedon??? That NEVER happened. Alexander's colossal empire won in less than a few years lasted only as long as he lived. When he died the Macedonian Empire fractured into warring factions led by the generals; Ptolemy in Eygpt, Cassander in Macedon, Niarchus and Craterus in Bactria, Seleucus in Persia...and so on. These powerful forces fought hard and hundreds of years before Rome dared to expand into Gaul etc. Rome was a swamp village turned stronghold.
Would that the world today offer such a perfect definition of right and wrong? For this I would gladly trade all I possess, for the chance to be a part of such a battle. Should I fall, weep not for me but bear me home upon my shield, and say "This was a man who fought with honor." May the Valkyries deem me worthy and bear me to Odin's Halls, where we will revel until called forth to the battle at the end f all things.
the scene with witch king is made on mushrooms, it should be different,he never broke him, they didnt want to confront at all. i compared Battle with the book versions and its so changed, and i mean in the bad way.and if you watch it as many times i did, its shitty editing.for example there is same shot of eomer with spear tree times in 5 minutes.and i hate to say this, but mass scenes from braveheart look way better.
Great scene, always gives me a chill up the spine. Although to nitpick... in the book the charge is more effective because it's a surprise attack. In the movie, Peter Jackson set it up so they stand on a hill for 5 minutes in full view of the enemy, wasting time chanting and getting everyone riled up, thus giving the Orcs time to ready their archers and pikemen. Dumb tactical move.
i just want to know, did Tolkein write the actual speech or was that done by the script? Also, as i havnt read any of the books, apart from The Hobbit, did Tolkein actually describe the Charge of the Rohirrim at the Pennelor Films? - Plz answer, thanks
The speech was taken directly out of Tolkien's writing, but not word for word. As with plenty of the rest of the movie script, the Theoden's speech is a hodge-podge of quotes said by various characters in the book. Most of the words in the movie speech are in fact Theoden's in the book; some are Eomer's. But they are all Tolkien's.
@TheLastPaladin This particular speech? No, he pretty much gave this speech in the book minus the "death!" part and plus a "Fell deeds awake! Fire and slaughter!. But yeah, Jackson seemed to have little use for the context of Tolkien's words, and more use for the words themselves since Jackson probably can't write dialog worth a damn :/
Also, yes, Tolkien did describe the charge in the book (I use the word 'book' here to refer to the whole trilogy), which you should definitely read. LOTR is the crown jewel of modern western literature for a reason. If you've seen the films and enjoyed them, you owe it to yourself to read the book; I promise you will not be disappointed.
@sol200997 He very vividly described everything the Rohirim did, this is because he made them on what he though Britain should have been. He held Calvary and the horse in high regard and it was his opinion that if England had Calvary way back in the day then France would not have been successful in their invasion and British culture would not have been as "french"
@Thunderfork epic fantasy books/movies ARE NOT video games. I like HOMM but compared to LOTR it literally sucks. And yes, I had a childhood and I played HOMM3 all day.
"And as if in answer there came from far away another note. Horns, horns, horns. In dark Mindolluin's sides they dimly echoed. Great horns of the North wildly blowing. Rohan had come at last"
"Go forth, and fear no darkness! Arise, arise riders of Theoden! Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered! A sword day, a red day, ere the sun rises!"
"Ride now, ride now! Ride! Ride for ruin... and the worlds ending!"
Man, there's only one thing wrong with this, it's that Gandalf was far more powerful in the books and absolutly DESTROYED the witch king (that's why he's so badass)
I'm sorry, but that's just epic! If your chin doesn't raise up and your hair on your arm stand when watching this scene, your life has never known courage! Definitly influenced by the Polish charge on the Turks to save Vienna in 1883! DEATHHHHHHHHHH! :P
part 2 - I love the sense of fear you can feel facing such immense horror. I love the even greater courage they all make appeal to to follow their king in one desperate, final stand. Courage that boosts their energies and shatters the enemies' lines and defences. And that human roar only they can distinguish (Obviously the orcs can just hear a human roar from afar without really understanding what they have just been promised: death) and those horns meaning something anyone can distinguish. And
Books are always better than motion picture, because WE get to create the scene in our own minds and hearts. That said, PJ did a wonderful job, save Gandalf being overpowerd: that's just plain rubbish coming out of who knows where. Possibly to give you the idea that courage can give the frailest creatures in the fight the strenght to destroy what even magic can't beat. That would have sense, at least. The charge, what an emotion! I love the tired look when they arrive with no time to rest. I lo
Only Tolkien can so beautifully illustrate humanity coming together, forgetting its differences, and giving out a hearty charge of brotherhood...
When all the soldiers scream "DEATH!" together, that's probably one of the most powerful moments to me. It just makes you warm on the inside to see so many people give their lives for eachother, for their families, for their way of life.
I also didn't like the Gandalf and Witch-king stand-off. It doesn't make sense for the witch king to be this powerful when he actually got pwned or warded off by Aragorn at Weathertop. The witch-king is more an enemy and match for men, not the Istari.
@SSeth123 At Weathertop, the plan was to retrieve the Ring and the Bearer. They were fought off by Aragorn. He isn't a normal man, remember: half elf, a descendant of Isildur, the true king of Men.
I really wished PJ had made the fume from mt doom that coverd the city in midnight darkness .The witch king coming through the broken gate still in the dark. That scene from the book always blew meaway.the fire burningin the fields outside the city, the headsof the slain catapulted along with the fireballs into the city. But this was awesom still!!
Has got to be one of the best moments in cinema history!!! As soon as i learnt they were making the films it was one of the moments i was most looking forward to and it didn't dissapoint!
i hate this scene with the witch king. that never happened in the book. gandalf's staff never broke and he met the witch king on horse back before the gate, but never backed down or looked like he was intimidated.
@Makoto55100 Just one charging horse is a force to be reckoned with, the charge would've broken through. the orcs might've held it for a little longer but they could never have held it back.
Don't you guys get chills on your body when Theoden and the Eorlingas scream "Death" or when the horns of Rohan sound, or when the violin plays during the charge? It's awsome feeling.. Like you want to be there too.Forth Eorlingas!!
Haha, all this time I thought he was saying "fights in front, not just behind", meaning they had to take on Gondor in on in side, and the Rohirrim on the other.
maybe its been said but the fact that the wizard king almost kills gandalf here is entirely against the spirit of the book. The way they portrayed gandalf in ROTK is just wrong!!!!!!

the charge of the rohimm is a mighty thing in the books

I also didn't like the Gandalf and Witch-king stand-off. It doesn't make sense for the witch king to be this powerful when he actually got pwned or warded off by Aragorn at Weathertop. The witch-king is more an enemy and match for men, not the Istari.
darkuser999 1 year ago
@darkuser999 He had less power then. Tolkien stated this in the books. By the time of Pelennor, he was fully energised.
bjammin187 11 months ago
@darkuser999 the nazgul draws their power from their dark lord @ weathertop they hadnt their full power and were far away of mordor
SSeth123 11 months ago

As soon as i learnt they were making the films it was one of the moments i was most looking forward to and it didn't dissapoint!

i hate this scene with the witch king. that never happened in the book. gandalf's staff never broke and he met the witch king on horse back before the gate, but never backed down or looked like he was intimidated.

zekrom3000 1 year ago
Pikemen.. er.. Pike-orcs panicked and broke ranks otherwise they might have held back that charge.
Makoto55100 1 year ago
@Makoto55100 Just one charging horse is a force to be reckoned with, the charge would've broken through. the orcs might've held it for a little longer but they could never have held it back.

Don't you guys get chills on your body when Theoden and the Eorlingas scream "Death" or when the horns of Rohan sound, or when the violin plays during the charge? It's awsome feeling.. Like you want to be there too.Forth Eorlingas!!

"PIKES IN FRONT ARCHERS BEHIND"
Hunkarov 1 year ago
@Hunkarov
Haha, all this time I thought he was saying "fights in front, not just behind", meaning they had to take on Gondor in on in side, and the Rohirrim on the other.
Even though I was wrong it still made sense.
kooter02 1 year ago
@kooter02 Not necessarily, because those orcs were in the middle, and it wouldn't make sense to try and shift. The Rohirrim attacked from the flanks.

I'd imagine the people in the back and to the far right can't hear him very well.
entropyapathy 1 year ago
maybe its been said but the fact that the wizard king almost kills gandalf here is entirely against the spirit of the book. The way they portrayed gandalf in ROTK is just wrong!!!!!!
