@1137stick I'm getting something together for you picture and number wise. I have a feeling that what you're bringing total will weigh less than what i bring because i have made a whole system... if you really would want to compare systems, i guess there's more in it than just the filter.... I'll send something along when i get the photos and weights together. The best equipment for you is always what works best for you. Thanks
@1377stick I have the 3 way inline and I have it attached to a Platypus Reservoir. I took it off during the winter just to avoid any chance of it freezing.
I've been following your videos for a while and saw that you used the Frontier Pro, and thought about recommending the Sawyer Squeeze to you. It's just like the Frontier Pro, but has a longer service life at the penalty of a few grams. I've been happy with it just as it is, but am trying to make a system, either gravity or squeezable, to fill right into my 2L platy bag inside my pack (I don't carry a water bottle otherwise). Also the filtration is .1micron vs 3micron from what I remember.
That Sawyer Squeeze looks rather bulky to me. It is one reason I went with the 3 way inline instead, but obviously I sent it back too. Also the Squeeze is heavier than the system I now have, which gets rid of it all, viruses included.
Also, I don't use the FP on it's own. I use it with the chemicals if the water is skanky looking, just as a little extra security.
If you rig a gravity system up with it I would be interested to see what you have, with weights.
There are still somethings that I use REI for and will continue to do so. Same as Backcountry (DOT) com. I love them both...actually I should have a delivery from BC today or tomorrow... :)
I was trying to figure out a good way to use the little prefilters that came with the filter, but the edge of a towel makes more sense, to me anyway.
That is one thing about these filters, they are only good for "up to 50 gallons." Once they reach the limit, or become clogged though they are garbage. Cannot change the filter out. But, the good thing is they are less than $20. However, a prefilter (along with limited use) should give me a fairly long life with it. We'll see...
@1377stick see that the only reason i went with the squeeze over the frontier. my squeeze weighs 70g dry and apparently will "never" have to be replaced but i imagine i will replace it every few years just to be safe
I debated getting the Squeeze but the inline seemed to be more what I was after. From what I can tell though the Squeeze can be turned into a gravity system fairly easy huh?
Funny thing, Sawyer offers the 1 million gallon warranty, but haven't actually ran that much through a filter. It's their way of saying lifetime warranty, however, some say their customer service dept is a bit lacking...
Also, I was leary about keeping the filters from freezing or falling, which could damage them.
@1377stick thats very true. freezing temps will destroy a hollow fiber filter. but the squeeze can easily be converted to a gravity set up as long as you have one of those "tornado" tubes for mating two male threads together.
I am guilty of not drinking too much on the trail. I usually leave camp just like I start the hike. 1L in my Gatorade bottle and 1 in my Platy. During the day I will usually stop for 1 more liter in the Platy when I empty out the Platy from the morning. Usually though 3L is about all I drink on the trail. Sometimes less, sometimes more.
Of course it also depends on water conditions too though. If it's drier I may carry more, but I would have still carried it if I had a filter too...
Really, really, excellent video. I appreciate your thoroughness and thoughtfulness on this subject! I'm currently using the Sawyer as a direct inline filter from a "dirty" 3ltr platypus, thru the filter, and to a bite valve that I drink from. No second bag or bottle. The hoses do get a little annoying though, like you said. Anyway, fantastic analysis on this topic, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching. I take it that you are using the 3 way inline filter? I really wanted to like that system, but TBH, the total weight kinda bummed me out and then considering how much I like my current system, it was hard for me to hang onto it. Maybe one day I will give it more thought...
Good stuff brother :o) I'm not a big fan of the bladder myself. Takes up too much space in the pack I think. The gravity system is sweet! Torben had a good idea with the bottle on the strap for sure!
Another good point! A 100 oz bladder will fill a void, and especially so in the smaller packs! If I ever go back to filtering full time, it will definitely be via a gravity system.
And the bottle strap was a great idea! I think it was the icing on the cake...

I'm glad you put up another video and broke it down as to how you manage your water. That is one thing I struggle with at times. Great vid!

Sure makes a lightweight, compact system. Will have to consider it. I'm still carrying a Katadyn Hiker filter system.
Woodenarrows 1 month ago
@Woodenarrows
That it does. That is what drew me to it, and I have become attached to it, obviously... :)
Don't get me wrong though, there were things that I liked about the Hiker Pro filter, but when I weighed them I fell in favor of the chemicals.
In the end, they obviously each have their pro's and con's. So, it's up to each of us to sort those out and decide which we like best.
Anyway, thanks for watching!

do you feel like you have to fill up your bottle several times before you get to camp or do you just fill it up once or twice?

I use kool aid in my water also. The vitamin C should help kill the chlorine taste a bit. nice vid

@bushbumming29
True that! In warmer weather I have found that the MP1 tabs can leave a strong taste to the water unless it is filtered or flavoring is added to it.
