intense, but 100% retarded. see in a real battle. they would not last more than 30 second. being that exposed, and even hidden. cars cannot resist impact from rifles designed to penetrate harder steel helmets, and soo many bullets? if you squeeze a m16/m4 for less than 3 seconds. you empty the magzine, so i call this. the most retard intense fight of the decade ▐▐▐▐:(
@Czaendermajer See now, here's where you're wrong, I guess you're referring to the scene where Kilmer was firing the AR-15 at Pacino directly at a car right? Then I'd tell you why it's not retarded. Yes, they're using 5.56mm NATO rounds and he's shooting at Pacino through the hood of the car. There's so many things at the hood of the car, therefore the bullets would be ricochet off several hard and more solid surface, plus a decreased force. There are other flaws though.
Tom Cruise and Al pacino? This film seems to be realy good... You should try to see listening "Scavenger - Killradio" i was doing it and it made the video even better!
HEAT one of the best movies of all times;and not just because of the shooting scenes which are beatifuly orchestrated but the whole movie is so well composed and shot, each frame is like a photograph in motion, sort of like barry lyndon..the performances are stellar, the sfx are done in good taste and don't distract the viewer and the plot actually makes sense,it's just a good good movie, and the kind of guy movie that you can actually bring your gf too
damn that was good. nothing compares to this in any movie. it's crazy how the cops were shooting even tho there were people inside those cars at the beginning....
honestly... never seen the movie... but now i will! Though I'm more of a guy who likes War movies, I love how this shooting scene seems more realistic then many movies ive seen before
it looks like exactly like the korean daewoo rifle, same 5.56mm as the m16s which are most popular in movies, but i never expected to see a daewoo rifle, in any american films.
In short; refrain from being a smart ass and stating the platforms are not Commando's, when in fact, they are. On another note I was not stating that the smaller caliber Heckler and Koch platforms have recoil. G-Series are popular with loose component fitting that ultimately recoils. Especially in the late 50's A and B 7.62mm models. In NZA, we adopted the Steyr but our CQC's do utilize variants of the M-Series H & K's.
NicoretteMan. I now just realized that the FNC Pacino is "wielding" was not the H & K. I tagged two different firearms as one, my mistake. Though Bushmaster was involved during the preliminary "blueprints" of the shootout scene. Meaning they were going to utilize Bushmaster's M4 Carbine for Kilmer and Robert. Then Colt, who obviously manufacturers the .233 Commando, stepped in and decided to endorse their firearm by utilizing the Commando. Val's platform is Colt. Not Armalite, nor Bushmaster.
Good old 5.56mm Colt Commando's and the Fabrique Nationale Carbine. Pacino is wielding a Heckler & Koch G-Series of some sort. A lot of recoil are in those H & K's let me tell you.
Astronaut: The only H&K, of any sort, in the whole movie is a H&K 91 used by Val Kilmer sniping in the parking lot/gone wrong deal scene. Pacino is "wielding" a FN 80 in .223 (5.56).
H&K with lots of recoil? A .223 with "lots of recoil"?? You tried to guess an old G3? No recoil there either mate. Oh, one more thing, no Colt's Commando, M4's actually. You got one thing right though, they were "good old" carbines.
yep, thats what movies, tv and videogames are for :D. basically they teach us how to shoot and reload weapons without training, so yeah, i know how to shoot and reload RPG's, pistols, assault riffles, uzis, and all kinds of stuf !!
This scene was such a realistic depiction of move, fire, reload, fire, that I think either a police department or the US Marines used it as a training video for how to deal with such a situation. First time I saw this it blew me away. Absolutely incredible. The scene in Collaterol is good, but not a patch on this
Michael Mann brought in Andy McNabb and Mick Gould, both formerly of the British Special Air Service, as technical advisors to both train the actors and choreograph the action sequences. The firing tactics are pure textbook SAS. McNabb served in the famous Bravo Two Zero operation in Gulf War 1 and was taken POW. The movie Bravo Two Zero depicts his story. And the action sequences, though in the Iraqi desert, reflect the same tactics.
I JUST finished watching this movie. This scene was AMAZING. Honestly, felt like 10 minutes and I was absolutely enthralled. The gunshots are perfect, not over down and suit the atmosphere perfectly. Not playing music in the background added to the intensity of it. While I believe they would have gotten picked off, the precision in which this scene was executed along with the sheer spread of bullets made it very believable. The matrix shootout is "cool" but this is the best shootout i've seen!
I'm a big fan of Heat, and I love the buildup to this, when you see how both crews (cops and gangsters) are on rails. Neither is going to give an inch, it comes to that head but you sense it all along the movie. Mann played with many basic, but brilliant oppositions, like good - bad, justice - injustice, love - hate, selfishness - selflessness, honor - betrayal, and those still come out somehow, even in this gun battle. So life like, even how the cops inch their way behind that bus... Brilliant.
totally agree, i hate the idea of them making dudes get nailed with a pistol in long range shooting or sumetin like that. one thing, the police are getting 'peppered' with machine guns, but the cops with pistols are shooting back ?!
Fuck Yeah! Shootin' scenes don't get better, that's true. But there's a lot of competition form other movies like "The Way of The Gun", "Scarface" etc...

I remember watching "Heat" in a cinema for the first time, the tension rised slowly through-out the whole movie and finally exploded in this scene.
I actually tried to keep my head down but still starred at the screen.
Never felt such an intense impression of being caught in a gun fight again...well, maybe the first ten minutes of SPR are even more intense.
