I have to say, Ryan hit a lot of the problems right on the head. However, when you see the cheesy or bad acting, I feel like that falls right on the director too man... a good director aught to catch it when your hollywood film is getting crappy acting material. M Vaughn hasn't proved to me that he's a great acting director at all... he's had some great names working for him though! I would even venture to say Bacon's performance wasn't all that impressive in this film though... But McAvoy! WOW
i didn't enjoy xmen first class because i expected it was full of action then it got cheesy and stuff ... though i think james mcavoy did a great job on portraying profesor x ....
I enjoyed the movie, however I had two real issues, besides the ones you already mentioned, Ryan. One: I don't like how they blatantly ignored not only the events of the third movie(yes, I remember how much it sucked), but also the way they presented the CIA guy as Colonel Striker, even though he was clearly older in this movie than in X2. Two: I got a real bad vibe of them intentionally stealing the "mexican standoff" scene from Inglourious Basterds in the scene with Fassbender in Argentina.
@JustinWomackMusic i... don't disagree about the Stryker thing, but... you need at least two, but preferably three or more, people with weapons simultaneously on each other to have a Mexican standoff. Not to mention they weren't in an indefensible basement. So I don't see how this could be considered a rip off of Inglorious Basterds other than Fassbender was in both, it was a bar, and he had a gun at one point.
@biofh Well, I had "mexican standoff" in quotes for a reason...if you'll remember, that was Aldo's line in the movie. Also, maybe "stealing" was bad form on my part. I'll give you that. But you have to admit it was at least a nod to that scene.
Completely agree with you RY RY the MOVIE GUY! Beast looked atrocious! Especially when you first see him walking into the hangar...I had to let out a chuckle.
Thank you for doing these! I love film state, but it is also really nice to see what you thought after actually seeing the movie. Best of both worlds :D
Want to see a great film with Michael Fassbender check out the British drama Fish Tank. It's seriously good and not afraid to get really series and bleak in places with amazing performances all round especially the lead Katie Jarvis who hasn't been in anything before or since but was up for the lead role in the new The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo for a while.
YOU STOLE MY IDEA!!! I HAD LOADS OF PLANS TO MAKE A ONE-MINUTE MOVIE REVIEWS AND NOW... PEOPLE WILL THINK I STOLE IT FROM YOU!!! GRRR!!!! Great review, BTW.
The flaw of the history of this doesnt bother anyone?! This isnt true to the comic! I know movies take a few liberties with comic books, but I just cant bring myself to watch it because they effed up the story line so much!
@Imagewicked I'd imagine normal Mystique. There were moments when I wanted to punch her in the throat. And I didn't like how she looked as Mystique with her blue on, so yeaah..
I really hated the pixey action scenes. They reminded me of some high school low budget wire act. The movie in general was good but there were definitely scenes that were horrible.
i was the only person out of the 15 of us that went to see this at midnight that said exactly everything you said about the film and nothing more. every1 else was like "wow, super heros, explosions, wow". im happy that im not alone...
Best scene of the movie was when Erik was in Argentina and they have the suspenseful cheers to having names taken away. That was pure generousness and the following moments of satisfied vindication were glorious. Michael Fassbinder is now one of my favorite actors. Talk about epic.
My only real problem with the film was the continuity errors. In the beginning of X3, Xavier is walking around, a older man and still friends with Magneto. Also walking around in Origins. But at the end of this film he is paralyzed and professor x and magneto are no longer friends. WTF Singer!
So I know you already do FilmState, and WatchTalk... and FilmRiot... and you are working on Tell... buuuuuuut this was awesome and you should keep doing reviews. I just want more of you in my eye holes.
Also I thought that Jennifer Lawerence was fine, the problem was they gave her the worst lines (see Mutant and proud). But whenever she wasn't talking, that was when she did a really good job. Although I might just be biased after seeing her being awesome in Winters Bone and because she is smexy
my favorite scene was when magneto kills those guys in the bar. Fassbender and Mcavoy did a really good job in this one. Also like the cameos in the movie
The reason why they made Beast look like that is because that's how he looks now. It's weird they gave Beast his second mutation in the 60s yet in the 2000s he seemed like the one we all know. This is why I didn't like the non-consistency between this movie and the others.
@bgcorporation I 100% see what you mean, however, it happens that this movie was actually NOT suppost to be in consistency with the others. The director or producer, or someone, said that this was a prequel rebooting the series. If you wanna check for yourself, go to imdb.com.
A lot of things between this movie and the original 3 x-men movies conflicted with each other. For example, at the end of this movie, charlies and eric ended up going their separate ways and yet in the beginning of X-Men 3, they were visiting Gene together as friends. Second and most obvious, in the beginning of X-Men 3 as well as the end of Wolverine, Charles was walking at an old age and yet in First Class, he was in the wheel chair at a young age. Thoughts in this puzzle?
@FilmState That's possible except prof. X wheel chair alone is a pretty large error especially since even if they were to ignore x-men 3, he still wasn't in a wheel chair in Wolverine. The big thing with origins and first class was it was to explain how the first X-men movies came to be. Don't get me wrong, the cause of how Charles getting in that chair was pretty good but I couldn't see the writers over looking it from those other 2 movies.
@FilmState me thinks they confirmed that in the trivia segment in IMDb. not sure, though the movie was great and I hope that future x-men films get better. :D
@TitusLabs I read in an article somewhere that they tried to cancel the stories of X3 and X-men Origins: Wolverine due to the fact that those movies were awful
@TitusLabs Thank you, really. The fact that he was paralyzed, even when he was shown walking in the third movie, really pissed me off, i started to yell it out when i got out of the theater, it kinda ruined the movie for me, but i still enjoyed it.
it was really hard to pick best performance between michael fassbender and james mcavoy. They were both just so perfect for the roles! p.s....Xavier was such a frat boy.
by cheasy do you mean at the end when raven says and remeber mutant and proud? p.s. I agree with what you said about the makeup with beast. it was terrible!!!
i didnt like the part where magneto (when he was a boy) was flinging shit around, just looked to fake. and when Sebastion Shaw was supposed to be "frozen" and was wobbling around but otherwise it was good
the only problem with films made from comics or even books is that they never do the comic or book justice, i can't speak for watchmen as i've never read the comic but i really loved the film. and i'm a huge spidey fan so i've got a bad feeling that the reboot is gonna suck harder than the first 3 which would be a shame because the lead actor they've choosen for spidey is an amazing actor and provided he has a good american accent he should at least hold the film together slightly
If you read the books they really tried to include beast in every one of them some how some way. I don't like cat beast myself, and I don't think he is a better design than the ape like beast so I have to give you that one.
