  • Some of the wires on the loom aren't that great, so chances are its a sensor wire has deteriorated on the loom causing a random fault.

You could try changing out the ignition coils for some spare/scrap ones to see if that makes any difference.

Polo's are generally sound as hell, just the 1990's 1.4 8v engine was a bit of a shit, the 1.0, 1.6 and diesels were worlds better. And the newer polo (9n and 9n6) had an all new 1.4 and 1.4 16v (valver) which are brilliant, one of the best in class.

  • I GOT ONE OF THESE AND HAVE NOTHING BUT HASSLE WITH IT. ENGINE MANAGEMENT LIGHT ON ALL THE TIME ( EMMISIONS) - VW WANT £50 TO TELL ME WHAT THE PROBLEM IS - OTHER GARAGES HAVE LOOKED AND KEEP COMING UP WITH DIFF' 'CURES' BUT 10 MINS LATER THE FUCKER COMES BACK ON, LAST TIME THE GARAGE SAID THE AIRBOX HAD A SPLIT ?? - HE TAPED IT UP WITH DUCK TAPE !! - IM GONNA FLOG THE BASTARD AND I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER POLO, I WILL BUY A RELIABLE JAP CAR !!

  • @MrFukitt We had the same problem ... lost power on motorway going on holiday ..towed to VW garage by AA . fitted new ignition coil, got on our way again then engine management light came on. Took to another garage, switched it off....then it came on again, this time told need new catalytic converter...£640 Never got out holiday could not trust the car... light still on ...fed up with it...and out of pocket.!!

  • epc light (engine management) still on may need the electronics looking at.

  • I've noticed with mine that it only happens when the engine is warm... so when I first start the car it's fine, I then drive it for 20 minutes or so and then when I turn the car off it does this until the engine cools down again & then it's fine!! How annoying!

  • man mine is doing the same thing it checked the fuel it is fine the pump works perfectly the air filter is OK and i just changed the batteries on this car just two months ago so the battery is not issue. the car shows signs of starting then for no reason would not continue idling but shut down.

  • Hello mate i have the vw polo 1.4 16v y reg i have the same problem as you like when i go to start the car in the morning its fine then after driving then stoping it wont start up agin could you please tell me have you fixed the problem yet or have any idea what it could be as the only thing coming to my mind after researching is that it could most likely be the fuel pump that has gone bad good luck Ryan
