  • so true. My school has gifted programs for some areas, like in math I'm three years ahead in cal even though I'm a sophomore, and in social studies, where there are ap options available for every grade, and I have the highest grades in THOSE classes. However, in my honors English 10 class, where I find the material boring and repetitive to what we learn EVERY year in english, I tend not to pay attention and have my lowest grade in that class! There are no higher english classes for my grade!

  • My teacher calls me lazy, but always says to the class how im the top student and how smart i am but he pits to much presser on me

  • its a lovely thing when a child is gifted but kids who arent dont get as much attention such a shame

  • My son is in a gifted program. I am so thankful such programs exist. He would never be properly challenged in a regular class. He is gifted in math. At the age of 7 he does 5th grade math. He even can do some of the 8th grade curriculum. I think it would be a sin to keep such kids in a regular classroom.

  • i agree with a lot of this. i'm in an advanced classes but i still get c's sometimes. i dont think its cause im not smart enough. its probably because i am really busy between classes, sports, and band. also i'm glad i got put in an advanced writing class because i dont feel like i have to hold back the way i do when im not in that class. i like the way other students look to me for help because i have the label "smart" on my from being in talented and gifted classes.

  • Being with an academic peer group would be a great start for all GT kids. Finding a peer group is difficult if not impossible when the parents have limited resources and the public schools see GT kids as a "problem"

  • i hate it that if everybody thinks of you as "insanely smart", then if you accidentallly mess up on something, everybody starts freaking out... it drives me crazy. nobodys perfect

  • Red shirt guy in myth no. 2 is absolutely right! The school lunches will not do, Ms. Principal! He needs some chocolate cake too!

  • My schools are gay...I have an iq of 144 , but I'm not in gifted :( I also checked the different subjects/quilificatiins dor gifted , and I thrived in all of them.it sucks balls..but I can take classes 2 1/2 grades harder , so yea

  • Good job Maryland.

  • Another gripe I have with all of this is all of the "Oh, Liam! You're so brilliant!" and "I've never seen such a bright child. You probably don't have to try hard at anything" I have heard various times over the years. Although flattering and lovely to hear, those statements have driven me to extreme perfectionism and caused me to have poor work ethic. A conflicting duality in every sense. My test anxiety is now so powerful that I require separation from the class during tests.

  • Kiikasi, how about not caring what other people say? You're intelligent, they're dim wits. One thing about dim wits is they can not imagine things from another person's point of view. So they can't understand you. They just make wild guesses.

So you're getting stressed out, trying to fit someone else's idea of you, which is really just a wild guess. That doesn't work.

Just be yourself. Even gifted children have great days, okay days and lousy days.

  • Being in the gifted range (IQ test results from 132-153. Wide variance, I know) I've heard a lot of these myths. My schools never had gifted programs and never allowed grade acceleration. I just became bored with school and stopped wanting to go. I often feigned illness to avoid going to school because I felt like it was just a drag. It wasn't until High School that I actually started to learn anything new because it was the first time I was open to Advanced courses.

  • Really instructive, creative and sensible responses to the myths: please delete and remove the first 90 seconds, which are insufferable.

  • As a 53 yr.-old gifted person, I can tell you times have really changed. Growing up, we just had the smart kids and the normal kids. I hated school by jr. high and didn't even try by high school. Now I teach at a school for gifted kids- what a treat! I love it!

  • Why call it "Gifted" to begin with? Gifted by what/who exactly?

  • I couldn't agree more. Also it is sad that most gifted children are stuck in Heterogeneous grouping.

  • Beautiful!

  • such important information is covered! I love this video.

  • Very nice

  • my junior high offers no gifted classes :( It's terrible, because being very gifted, I'm way beyond the others... :/

  • What really ticks me about being gifted is that I'm always really bored in class, and I think that my school should have gifted class more than 1ce a week. And if it could happen, I'd luv to study things that r going on in the 21st century

  • Awesome! I'm a gifted 1st grader, this was great!

  • Awesome!

  • Excellent visual defense of gifted ed. (love the humor!)

  • You guys are completely on target. I can't even express how thoroughly I agree, and how EXACTLY this captures my schooling experience. It infuriates me that NOTHING has changed.
