@NorthernerMatty123 yes they did in gallipoli something like 2000 australians died on the first day and it was because it would of ended the war we were preparing to invade turkey
Check out Gen Sir John Monash and his tactics at Le Hamel that were adopted by the Germans in WW2. The Australians were the first to break the Hindenburg Line. They stopped the Gemans at Amiens when the British army there were in full retreat. Paris would have been taken. Haig broke down and wept when thanking the Australians. We didn't have the knowledge back then. There was no internet for starters. If Britain was at war so we were we. If you didn't go you might be presented with a white feather for being a coward. You were looked down upon. It isn't as black and white as it appears in retrospect.
The white feather campaign shows how ideas of heroism, bravery and cowardice were and still are used to manipulate men's feelings and stop them thinking for themselves. But if you went to war because you were AFRAID of being regarded as a coward, that too was a form of cowardice, wasn't it?
No I don't hate them. Nor do I admire them. I pity them. They were victims of lying propaganda. Though they could have found out what war would be like by learning about previous wars, e.g. the American civil war. Or just by informing themselves about weapons and then using their imagination. But they were mostly kids, and kids are easily manipulated.
@adam13weishaupt You forget the point. This was Europe's war, the Government sent men in name of the commonwealth, Propaganda and censored media were used to encourage patriotism and spread fear campaigns, used to encourage Australians to go to war. It's not the soldiers but the governments which are to blame. Remember the internet or global televison wasn't around in 1914. It was easy for information to be filtered.
Very valid points. All the same, there have always been some people like me who even from an early age are resistant to propaganda, ignore it or believe the opposite. There was intensive propaganda in the Soviet Union, but some people resisted it, even without alternative sources of information apart from their own experience. So I'm not sure that those who believe propaganda are not a tiny bit to blame.
I had a great uncle who fought in WWI. I remember him talking about it, but don't remember where he served. My father served in WWII, Europe and North Africa. Building caskets was part of his duties. Had to build them fast and small as possible. He served under Patton & greatly admired him.
You should have Respect for any one who fell in this conflict be they British French German Russian Austro-Hungarian American Cannadian ANZAC Indian Pakistani Italian RIP
THOUSANDS OF LIVES were lost in World War 1 & World War 2. Germany & Japan came VERY CLOSE to winning the war & if they would have -- you would have no freedoms at all.
If you don't like freedom -- go over to the Middle East, Iraq, Iran & see how long you live. See what it's like on the other sice or better yet stay over there. Because every military person who has fought in any war past & current to keep your country FREE, you should be thankful. If your not, leave & never come back.
let me shot at you dumbas & see what the resultus are. Or have a bomb go off & see what happens. When you fight for freedom it's your life or theirs. If they win, you lose the freedom you had. So, dumbass, because they gave their life in war, you have freedom today. If you don't like freedom, go to Iran.
what does that have anything to do with what i replied to? i said if the germans were shooting at them during that scene why would they be casually walking
Watch the video again. When they are going out of the trench the dirt under the soldiers shoes is soft. Plus, this vidoe is not at 100% full speed. The soldier got shot before making it over the top of the trench & the second one was running & got shot & went down. NO SOLDIER who died in war for your freedom is a "dumass" as you say. Tthe RED on the USA Flag stands for the blood of every soldier who gave their life in war!
Then I'm Sorry. I don't take nicely to anyone who puts our military down especially when they come back disabled or dead. They can't say much or do much. However, I & many other veterans will & hopefully you would do the same.
he was very much alive, film was staged none of its real lol. also check guy at 2.21 who falls watch him moves his foot and turns his head to get more comfortable cant miss it lol.. thats your question answared...
well no, there might not be a freekin better sacrfice but families have lost great men from this war whats the difference for alstraliea they had men die we all had men die and no i can not here alstarlies heros marching they did for there cauls and others for theres
Now OUR future Queen will be Australian.. then I have to listen...Never heard this one before... quite moving..!! Allways thoght the Aussies were great.(WW2).. Peace from Denmark...
1/3 of tottal Serbian population died and more then 1/2 of mans!It was the same situatinon in WW2. House on the cross road is the worst thing for small nation! I realy feel sorry for every life but take a look on German coments! They will try again! Peace uber alles!!! I`m 28 but I saw 3 wars: Bosnia,Croatia,Kosovo (Nato bombing of Serbia) in the hart of Europe in the late 20st.Peace!Greets from Belgarde, the oldest capital in Eur after Athen and Rome but burrned to the ground 40times in 1000yrs!
Deutschland, Deutschland, uber alles-sad smart German kid! Shame! Peace Uber Alles!! Fuck the War!! Try to find out how many Serbs died from Austrohungarians and German hand in WW1 and WW2! enough war! When you lost someone in your family or anyone that you love, you realize-fuck the war! We Serbs know how is it to have a war on every 40yrs in the hart of Europe and it is not good I can tell you that.
world war one was a mistake in my eyes. a human mistake. a war like this should never happen again. now those of u badmouthing ANY side that took part in this should stfu. cuz chances r, if u r insulting these brave men then u wouldnt have the balls to do what they did. everyone was a hero
you obviously couldnt grasp what i was trying to say. Not once did i mention hitler. i was generally speaking that everyone that participated should be respected.
1914 christmas - un-official truce men from both sides got out of thier trenches and played football with eachother....the german soldier was just like the ordinary allied soldier....sittin in the trenches thinking wat a futile war this is
people every video of this sort that i watch people are always arguing and bad mouthing each other which ever way u look at it all these people of all the allied countries from then died fighting they knew wot they were getting into they didn't want to but they did whether they voulenteered or were conscripted they still thought and died arguing like this is a pretty bad way to repay there sacrifice im not gonna message back if any of u bad mouth me i wont stoop myself to that level sorry
aussies should have never been sent by the pom leaders. stupid cunts for even sending there own over the top, i put the blame on the leaders. the soldiers just do there job.
Jeez, and I thought America was the most hated country in the world... Guess you brits get a fair share of hate as well? But seriously, all of you who are hating eachother for no reason except what people nearly a hundred years ago did need to stop. This is a video to honor the dead, show some respect
they are one country .... england scotland and wales are under the same rule from the British primeminister ... scotland wales and england are under the same tax nhs education system everything .. its one country ... but it had denominations within it, and i dont see how australia can slate the UK when you are our ancestors as we made australia when we colonised it pal
It was a different time ,and you cannot look at it with today's mind set, The Empire was a huge great family and most people felt they belonged to this family and were willing fight for its survival.
This was a war fought by British soldiers for the British imperialist Empire who signed on with an oath not to defend Australia, but to serve the British king as "British" citizens . Not as Australians in their own right. . Their army was not called the Australian Infantry Force AIF ,but the Australian IMPERIALIST Force. An AIF fighting under British command and flag for British empire. Even its medals were awarded by permission and certified by the British Imperialists.

I don't want to be labelled a coward so I will do somerthing real easy like get my as shot and bombed at for 4 years straight.
gee what a soft option for a coward lol.
Seriously, one thing for sure is a lot of these guys had no idea what war would be like.
A few weeks into sure wished they had never joined.
Can't hate them for being uninformed
kthanid83 2 years ago
No I don't hate them. Nor do I admire them. I pity them. They were victims of lying propaganda. Though they could have found out what war would be like by learning about previous wars, e.g. the American civil war. Or just by informing themselves about weapons and then using their imagination. But they were mostly kids, and kids are easily manipulated.
adam13weishaupt 2 years ago
@adam13weishaupt You forget the point. This was Europe's war, the Government sent men in name of the commonwealth, Propaganda and censored media were used to encourage patriotism and spread fear campaigns, used to encourage Australians to go to war. It's not the soldiers but the governments which are to blame. Remember the internet or global televison wasn't around in 1914. It was easy for information to be filtered.
MrDeficate 2 years ago 2
Very valid points. All the same, there have always been some people like me who even from an early age are resistant to propaganda, ignore it or believe the opposite. There was intensive propaganda in the Soviet Union, but some people resisted it, even without alternative sources of information apart from their own experience. So I'm not sure that those who believe propaganda are not a tiny bit to blame.
adam13weishaupt 2 years ago
they were all heroes if they thought they were doing the right thing, whether they fought or stayed.
They can't do any more than that.
The day you are put in that position yourself you can judge who is a hero or not....
kthanid83 2 years ago
I had a great uncle who fought in WWI. I remember him talking about it, but don't remember where he served. My father served in WWII, Europe and North Africa. Building caskets was part of his duties. Had to build them fast and small as possible. He served under Patton & greatly admired him.

Countries don't ask or tell people to do anything. Governments do. Do you really think that no one should ever say no to their government?

Millions died in the wars, a horrible tragedy that still shakes us to this day.
My respects to the Australians soldiers and people past and present may the bonds our countries forged in these wars last until the end.
From your brothers in arms Canada, the UK and the countless others in the world.

But in terms of sheer numbers, it was the French, Germans and British who really got creamed. Casualty figures in the millions.

If your not, leave & never come back.

i second this argument. I am lebanese (a country in the middle east)

All respects to all WAR victims everywhere.
Great Video!
However the music and singing for this vid absolutely SUCK. IMO.
Sorry, it just SOUNDS like some shitty car commercial from the states, to me.
It don't take anyway from nothing. Its just cheesy music.
2.12 never left the trench. 2.20 looks like he got cut down.
Dudes, all politcal masters aside, we are some great people! OVER THE TOP!!!

2:17 he got shotted
iskillquests 2 years ago
if they were getting shot at they wouldnt be walking casually dumass
serzh123aaa 2 years ago
let me shot at you dumbas & see what the resultus are. Or have a bomb go off & see what happens. When you fight for freedom it's your life or theirs. If they win, you lose the freedom you had. So, dumbass, because they gave their life in war, you have freedom today. If you don't like freedom, go to Iran.
PictureGuy99 2 years ago
what does that have anything to do with what i replied to? i said if the germans were shooting at them during that scene why would they be casually walking
serzh123aaa 2 years ago
They are marching, and they are in allied territory not on the front.
Gemred456 2 years ago
Watch the video again. When they are going out of the trench the dirt under the soldiers shoes is soft. Plus, this vidoe is not at 100% full speed. The soldier got shot before making it over the top of the trench & the second one was running & got shot & went down. NO SOLDIER who died in war for your freedom is a "dumass" as you say. Tthe RED on the USA Flag stands for the blood of every soldier who gave their life in war!
PictureGuy99 2 years ago
Oh dude you think ii called the soldiersr a dummas no i was replying to someone and called him a dumass not these soldiers idiot
serzh123aaa 2 years ago
Then I'm Sorry. I don't take nicely to anyone who puts our military down especially when they come back disabled or dead. They can't say much or do much. However, I & many other veterans will & hopefully you would do the same.

world war one was a mistake in my eyes. a human mistake. a war like this should never happen again. now those of u badmouthing ANY side that took part in this should stfu. cuz chances r, if u r insulting these brave men then u wouldnt have the balls to do what they did. everyone was a hero
UndeadGoober 2 years ago
A mistake?....Like, we chose that path?
As if any of the nations involved had a plan?....that went wrong?
A mistake! You really are a knob aren't you?
All were heroes?
What...the Kaiser was a hero?
Adolph Hitler, as a corporal in the first world war, was a hero?

GibboSASR 2 years ago
This was a war fought by British soldiers for the British imperialist Empire who signed on with an oath not to defend Australia, but to serve the British king as "British" citizens . Not as Australians in their own right. . Their army was not called the Australian Infantry Force AIF ,but the Australian IMPERIALIST Force. An AIF fighting under British command and flag for British empire. Even its medals were awarded by permission and certified by the British Imperialists.
