just a symbolism against mp3 culture! I really don't like downloaded mp3's cuz they decrease the sound quality to make it smaller for distribution... What I do is to buy the original CD and make my own MP3 file with maximum quality I can cuz it's only for me and not to distribute =) Just to preserve my CD as NEW...
@barcigian I don't like buying mp3s either. I prefer buying the original CD (220 originals and counting) then convert it for my convenience. If he's so against people not listening to the whole album he can go ahead and also smash radios and singles of all kinds :P
@Cassandrart I also have this extense collection myself! I use iTunes music store sometimes but just for that rare stuff I can´t find as CD! I also have a vinyl collection, I enjoy the way that it sounds! Wilson´s has OCD! ( JUST KIDDING OK!)
FWIW, sometimes "just the hits" is all you want/need. Sound of Muzak stands on its own. Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" does too. Need I mention Tom Sawyer or Limelight? Everything on Steely Dan's Aja stands on its own, but in its entirety each of these albums are brilliant. The iPod has given geeks like me (us) the ability to carry EVERYTHING. Quality's not great, but that's the trade off. Remember - music's a 2 party experience - artist and listener.

I have an ipod. I always listen to albums from start to finish. haha. The existence of mp3 music doesn't have to be mutually exclusive from full album listening experiences. That said...I would never buy mp3. If I was to pay for music, I would by a CD. No money to do so at present. But I download music all the time. As far as I'm concerned I should be allowed to. I have given thousands of pounds to the record industry. But still...I like having CD's.
.I listen to the songs I like on albums and skip the rest. I listen to music on shuffle sometimes. I am not trying this with my Ipod Nano. I like Porcupine Tree, but do not feel the need to agree with everything Steve Wilson says just to seem cool.
steven wilson makes some good music, but he is a fucking retard when it comes down to treat peoples SUBJECTIVE behavior of listening to mp3 compressed music like they are WRONG, like theres some kind of scientifically objective approuach to how one should listen to music.
@includao Steven advocates a time where people sat down and listened to albums from start to finish (as one would read a book or watch a film), while simultaneously being able to enjoy the large sleeves of album artwork and lyric sheets, which are essential to realizing the artists' complete creative vision. At the same time, he detests how mp3's compromise the musicial quality, and how download culture has turned albums into "products". There's nothing "fucking retarded" about that.
@zeppelin8 theres something 'fucking retarded' when someone advocates the best way to perceive art. art is subjective. I can listen to the whole album in a 7.1 environment or in an ipod, so what? its my choice. if Steven thinks thats the best way, thats his problem. music was a product in the old times, music is a product nowadays. if steven doesnt think music is a product, then that hypocrite elitist retard should give his music for free, for no one 'owns' art, theres no intellectual property.
@includao ... there's nothing "retarded" about saying "this is the best way to perceive art, since you get a more complete experience this way". It's not like he's going out and smashing YOUR iPod. His opinion is that the iPod reduces the mentality of the music to mere "content" to fit on an iPod, as a simple product rather than the complete piece of art that it is. There's nothing hypocritical or elitist about that.
@zeppelin8 when Steven says that some form of perceiving is better than the other (a completely subjective thing), then HE must prove it. The Burden Of Proof Lies With The Claimant. could he prove that one way to listen to music is better than the other? no. hence, his opinion on art is baseless, subjective and dumb (and elitist).
@includao Well, your enjoyment of something is subjective because taste is subjective. You may enjoy listening to an iPod more than listening to a vinyl or an album in 5.1 surround sound. You don't get as much with the iPod. You get a compressed mp3 file and perhaps an icon of an album to go with it. I mean, I can prove that on my own. Steven's method is listening to an album, holding the album art in your hands and intaking the whole experience. You get more from that.
If I were Steven I'd do the same. I hate the mp3, and although there's no other way for me to get some music, I still spend my money on buying records.
I f***ing love your music (see my name) since i discovered it with signify, but, really? Why don't you smash your tour bus and the camera too.?! This is just shamefull, is he 5 years old or something? I buy pt's cd, dvd(-a)... I have an ipod and so what ? I'm stupid? I don't really love music? Man, be carefull with your ego...
Steven is not raging against the iPod in and of itself, he's striking a symbolic blow towards the "mp3 style" of music that compromises the work and production that a band puts into an album (and its quality), and the "jukebox" mentality it promotes where people pick and choose certain songs to listen to, rather than listen to the album start to finish as it was meant to be listened to. That's it. You have to read between the lines and understand the underlying symbolism, my friend.
Exactly. I have an iPod touch, but its for the sake of being able to listen to my music when I'm at university or whatnot. And when I do listen to it, I listen to albums start to finish. At home, I usually listen to CD's on surround sound or vinyls.
@YtseJam16: Rock on, man! I remeber reading an interview of his where he said: What's the point of listening to an iPod on shuffle? You wouldn't pick up a book an start and chapter 6, then go to 17, then 3. You wouldn't watch a high definiton DVD from scene 10, then go back and forth. An album is a unit of art meant to be enjoyed as any other endeavour that someone put their soul into.
I have illegally downloaded every single release by Porcupine Tree and have them on my MP3 player. And not everyone likes the "shuffle" option on our MP3 devices... I listen to my stolen music as God intended: full albums, from start to finish. Still, I fail to see a problem with simply feeling in the mood to listen to a certain track off a particular record.
@zeppelin8 By the way, even the most primitive CD players had a "Next" and "Previous" song button, so this problem you are addressing predates the MP3 era.
But mostly I just think your attempt at "reading between the lines" is a gigantic leap of faith; you are simply giving SW carte blanche to behave like a huge dick. Because that is all he is doing; he is not a hero taking a stand against our decaying music culture, he just comes off as a whiney douchebag.
@danielmdmty No, if Steven Wilson was some random guy on the street who smashes iPods for the sake of attention, he'd be a whiney douchebag. If he is the leader and producer of a forward-thinking progressive rock group and actually has some substance to his claims, then he is making a valid statement. You have cheated yourself out of the full sonic Porcupine Tree experience. Refer to some of my previous comments below, so I don't have to repeat the same arguments over again.
@zeppelin8 : You are romanticizing this thing to a ridiculous degree. I have seen PT in concert before, and that more than makes up for whatever "sonic experience" I may be missing from my illegal copies (which happen to sound just fine to my unsophisticated, not forward-enough-thinking ears).
I am comfortable using my $10 earbuds to listen to my downloaded PT catalog; and I refuse to use a high quality audio system to listen to SW sing about his Xbox.
@zeppelin8 : I hate this ridiculous notion that there is a right way to listen to music; moreover, I detest self-appointed saviors of the lost and sacred art of "proper" musical enjoyment. There is a point in every non-douchebag's life when he realizes John Cusack's character in High Fidelity really IS an asshole (even the character himself realizes this); I hope SW realizes this soon.
PS. This bullshit is the same kind of nonsense floating around since the 80's and the big CD vs vinyl debate.
@danielmdmty I am not romanticizing, I am a realist. You are the one who's elevating SW to a "self-appointed savior" because he advocates listening to music on a sound system rather than on an mp3 system. You act like he's trying to go out of his way to destroy your MP3 player, but he's not. You are calling him a whiney douchebag on the simple grounds that you disagree with him. In doing so, you come off as being incredibly deluded and paranoid.
@danielmdmty Alright, alright, I get it. I know you flaunt your cheap MP3 player, your illegal files, and that you refuse to pay any money for a sound system to listen to SW sing about his Xbox (because honestly, what else DOES that man sing about?). I don't care. Obviously, you and I have different tastes in the mediums through which we enjoy our music, but you don't have to keep emphasizing your personal tastes. Your posts attack SW, and that's what I'm primarily addressing.
@zeppelin8 I have a confession to make. I do a fair bit of exploring on the internet and buy/download music that I like. When I hear about a new artist or band, I listen to an album of theirs before I make up my mind. I bought an iPod in 2007 and listened to In Absentia on it. Needless to say, I was blown away.
I see where he(and you) are coming from, but I have to say that if it weren't for the iPod, I may never have started listening to PT, which would've been a sad, sad thing to happen(or not)
@AnaroidPandroid And I agree with you too! The internet downloading culture does have its fair share of fringe benefits. If it wasn't for internet forums, I wouldn't have found out about Porcupine Tree in 2005 and listened to Blackest Eyes (a revolutionary song!). Even I will download Porcupine Tree albums that are no longer in print, because there's simply no other way to find them.
@warmdickweed Well, in the context of this video, it is in jest. He does, however, harbour a deep resentment to the mp3/download culture, as he clearly expresses in many of his interviews and in his new film Insurgentes. In the long run, he is quite serious (though in this video, the improves context allows for a laugh).
@zeppelin8 so your saying that he believes in listening to an album all the way through opposed to just the hits right? No wonder i love this band. So much truth
@MAXPAYNE485 Exactly :) He also believes in listening to music on a good sound system (vinyl or 5.1 surround sound) to get the best quality (rather than a compressed mp3 file), and in elaborate album artwork/packaging to accompany the music (visuals and audios complement each other to a great effect).
@zeppelin8 I agree with you and him but the advantage of mp3s and the players is that you can take the music wherever you like to. In my opinion music doesn't just have to be listened to but also experienced. Not just inside you own four walls but outside in various places.
Still he is right saying many albums are ment to be listened to in its entirety and therefore its good that there are bands like PT that are going against the nowadays attitude of listeners and still being successful.
@AltairEzio You make an excellent point, too. I remember last summer when I went for a walk in the forest while I was in the countryside of Quebec, and I was listening to an acoustic song by Opeth. I felt like I was in the perfect setting for the music.
@maggot202 Well if it was broken.... My sis' iPod broke, so we destroyed. Cunts at Apple won't replace it unless it has no marks whatsoever on the outer case...
I also miss when people actually made albums :P Now its just songs on a cd with no theme or flow :( Thats one of the reasons (of many) why I love PT anyway.
I loved Arriving Somewhere but there are many songs I'd rather see live. Like the whole FOABP album, Russia on Ice, The Moon Touches Your Shoulder, Waiting.
HAHAHAHA he's wearing a "jaffa cakes rocks" shirt... english treats, my friend has been raving about them for a long while and told me to order some a couple of years ago and I seriously promised I would and thought I was, but to this day I havent' tried them yet... anyway, Steven I fucking love you man. Porcupine Tree is and always will be my favorite band (along with Alice in Chains)
i think what steven wilson dislikes about ipods is the fact that it takes cohesive pieces of art, the albums, and tears it into pieces and mixes it up with a bunch of other music. music loses its artistic value. i can't blame him, he is an artist. if i was in that position i'd hate seeing an album i worked for years to put together perfectly torn up and thrown into the melting pot, so to speak, with all the other music on the ipod
Ahahaha I agree. Its like throwing all the artists hard work away, and the covers of an album make the album what they are and to but the music for so cheap is not giving recignition to the effort that the musican put into that. Ipods rip all that away. GO STEVEN! And great comment.
I always buy the CDs. I do not download, ever. Shit, I just got an MP3 player last week. I've been relying on only my CD player since the beginning of time :)
i dont think thats why he hates ipods... i think its more of how since ipods have been around, you can go online and buy 1 or 2 songs off an album... rather before the ipod, really all you could do was go buy an album. it really changes the way music is interpreted. because music should be something that is enjoyed rather than just "having it on in the background"
i cant fucking believe he i charging 27 quid for a fucking ticket...... if he was going to play the older stuff then i'd pay it.... but the new album will take an hour, then they'll probly play most of foabp... then finish with trains as usual. 27 quid is too much for that
Portland set list was: 1: The Incident ------- 1: Start Of Something Beautiful 2: Buying A New Soul 3: Middle part of Anesthetize 4: Lazarus 5: Strip The Soul/.3 6: Bonnie The Cat -------- 1: Way Out Of Here 2: Trains
He doesn't like Ipods because music can be easily downloaded through software and music that's downloaded to him it's like not appreciating music. You downloaded a few tracks and you can dismiss them very easily. It's all the data compression that's on mp3, mpegs and so on. Downloaded music isn't the same as music on a CD, (which is a piece of art.)
Quite honestly, your talking to someone who works with audio for a living, hence (audio engineer) and I also collect vinyls. Now, if you want to try again dare tell me why to fuck CD's I'll be here to back it up. I love vinyls too more than anything else. The comment you just made was surely redundant and repulsive. I dare you to give me 5 good reasons why to fuck cds or why they suck.
Please TRY listen to a decent mastered and pressed vinyl versus a CD. I really don't need to to give you 5 reasons. You really have good ears if you spot a difference between a cd and an 320 MP3. But none of them doesn't come close to a vinyl that has "the full spectrum". To me CD's is just "unnecessary" these days. I don't own a single cd anymore. And PT themself puts the ART into vinyl, although they don't make a penny of it by their own words. Vinyl is more and more a luxury item these days.
And in the end i wasn't even referring to the audio difference between the two (That has been debated thousands of times allready, each to their own choosing).. but the ARTWORK.. labels, cover mastering, cutting, engraving.. What you get when you pay for a media..etc etc.
I have owned an ipod for 1 week. It sucked and the audio was nowhere near as powerful as an album or cd. Ipods are convenient but thats it. Steven is right thta the downlaod generation seems to have a lack of soul and thta we are losing the human experience. We seem to be getting sucked into a sorta "Matrix".
Have you played around with different formats and settings? I'll be the first to admit that a compressed format isn't the same as an MP3, but *my* standard of ripping @ 192 kbps in AAC (Apple's format / MP4) is FAR better than the vast majority of MP3-ripped music files.
Hang out by the bus if possible after the show - I've had nice conversations with all of them, and while they're somewhat reserved by their British nature (my Better Half's family is, so I can relate) both Colin & Wes are HILARIOUS in person.
I witnessed this, and I just have to mention something. When this kid asked Steven to smash his ipod, Steven asked why he wanted him to smash it, and the kid said, "Because it's a piece of shit. It doesn't work." And Steven said, "Oh because it doesn't work. Okay." PRICELESS. I couldn't help but laugh.
Before people start coming up with the wrong conclutions, He dosn't like ANY mp3s because of the massive compression of the audio. Compared to a CD, the audio of mp3s are shit.
However, it saddens me that someone so versed in the studio & about MP3s knows a huge amount of the quality depends on the codec used and the compression rate. I spent days comparing the same song ripped as MP3/MP4 (Apple AAC)/lossless and at different rates to find the best sound-to-file size, and my library @ 192 AAC through decent headphones or speakers would beat Steven's old vinyl that he listened to on '70s-era stereos. I'd love to have a "Gentleman's Discussion" with him regarding this.
You *are* missing something important, but my iPod certainly isn't the only method I listen to music: it's great for the car, working out, when I'm not near a stereo. But the first time I listen to a piece of music and for times I want to *experience* it at a deeper level, there's my stereo with or without my Studio-Quality headphones.
...there's room for both. And what's Steven going to do next, spot-checks of stereos or headphones to see if they're of good enough quality to play his music?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
if the download culture did not strike porcupine tree they wouldn't tour that much or have the fans that do have now.and ipod is a great idea for one in urban areas who love music.too bad its done by apple but its well done in this case.stupid video.
What did you watch it for then!? And by the way, your comment barely makes any sense...Do yourself a favor and proof read next time before you try sounding like a smarty-pants!
I don't really think SW gives a damn how many fans he's made based on iTunes marketing. He's not in control of how his music is completely distributed in any case. But really, when he mixes such lush 5:1 tracks, I don't see why anyone would prefer the watered down files online. You're only saving a few bucks, if that.
I agree, plus, Ipods are not just for dowload music, it has more uses.
I think what he crtizises the most it's the lack of appreciation for tangible formats such as cd and the hollowness of only having music in digital formats.
Steven can smash my Ipod any day...

When I hear about a new artist or band, I listen to an album of theirs before I make up my mind. I bought an iPod in 2007 and listened to In Absentia on it. Needless to say, I was blown away.
I see where he(and you) are coming from, but I have to say that if it weren't for the iPod, I may never have started listening to PT, which would've been a sad, sad thing to happen(or not)
AnaroidPandroid 1 year ago
@AnaroidPandroid And I agree with you too! The internet downloading culture does have its fair share of fringe benefits. If it wasn't for internet forums, I wouldn't have found out about Porcupine Tree in 2005 and listened to Blackest Eyes (a revolutionary song!). Even I will download Porcupine Tree albums that are no longer in print, because there's simply no other way to find them.
zeppelin8 1 year ago
@zeppelin8 this was a joke and had no symbolic meaning... your overinterpretating big time.
warmdickweed 1 year ago
@warmdickweed Well, in the context of this video, it is in jest. He does, however, harbour a deep resentment to the mp3/download culture, as he clearly expresses in many of his interviews and in his new film Insurgentes. In the long run, he is quite serious (though in this video, the improves context allows for a laugh).
zeppelin8 1 year ago
@zeppelin8 so your saying that he believes in listening to an album all the way through opposed to just the hits right? No wonder i love this band. So much truth
MAXPAYNE485 1 year ago
@MAXPAYNE485 Exactly :) He also believes in listening to music on a good sound system (vinyl or 5.1 surround sound) to get the best quality (rather than a compressed mp3 file), and in elaborate album artwork/packaging to accompany the music (visuals and audios complement each other to a great effect).
zeppelin8 1 year ago
@zeppelin8 I agree with you and him but the advantage of mp3s and the players is that you can take the music wherever you like to. In my opinion music doesn't just have to be listened to but also experienced. Not just inside you own four walls but outside in various places.
Still he is right saying many albums are ment to be listened to in its entirety and therefore its good that there are bands like PT that are going against the nowadays attitude of listeners and still being successful.
AltairEzio 11 months ago
@AltairEzio You make an excellent point, too. I remember last summer when I went for a walk in the forest while I was in the countryside of Quebec, and I was listening to an acoustic song by Opeth. I felt like I was in the perfect setting for the music.

i think what steven wilson dislikes about ipods is the fact that it takes cohesive pieces of art, the albums, and tears it into pieces and mixes it up with a bunch of other music. music loses its artistic value. i can't blame him, he is an artist. if i was in that position i'd hate seeing an album i worked for years to put together perfectly torn up and thrown into the melting pot, so to speak, with all the other music on the ipod
znoahmarhoadskill 2 years ago
Ahahaha I agree. Its like throwing all the artists hard work away, and the covers of an album make the album what they are and to but the music for so cheap is not giving recignition to the effort that the musican put into that. Ipods rip all that away. GO STEVEN! And great comment.

nakenftw 2 years ago
i dont think thats why he hates ipods... i think its more of how since ipods have been around, you can go online and buy 1 or 2 songs off an album... rather before the ipod, really all you could do was go buy an album. it really changes the way music is interpreted. because music should be something that is enjoyed rather than just "having it on in the background"

Metalunited101 2 years ago
CD's.. What about Vinyl.. THAT is a piece of art.
Fuck CD!!
0Imtheslime0 2 years ago
Quite honestly, your talking to someone who works with audio for a living, hence (audio engineer) and I also collect vinyls. Now, if you want to try again dare tell me why to fuck CD's I'll be here to back it up. I love vinyls too more than anything else. The comment you just made was surely redundant and repulsive. I dare you to give me 5 good reasons why to fuck cds or why they suck.
Metalunited101 2 years ago 4
Please TRY listen to a decent mastered and pressed vinyl versus a CD. I really don't need to to give you 5 reasons. You really have good ears if you spot a difference between a cd and an 320 MP3. But none of them doesn't come close to a vinyl that has "the full spectrum". To me CD's is just "unnecessary" these days. I don't own a single cd anymore. And PT themself puts the ART into vinyl, although they don't make a penny of it by their own words. Vinyl is more and more a luxury item these days.
0Imtheslime0 2 years ago
And in the end i wasn't even referring to the audio difference between the two (That has been debated thousands of times allready, each to their own choosing).. but the ARTWORK.. labels, cover mastering, cutting, engraving.. What you get when you pay for a media..etc etc.
0Imtheslime0 2 years ago

I have owned an ipod for 1 week. It sucked and the audio was nowhere near as powerful as an album or cd. Ipods are convenient but thats it. Steven is right thta the downlaod generation seems to have a lack of soul and thta we are losing the human experience. We seem to be getting sucked into a sorta "Matrix".
ELEMENTALMUZ 2 years ago 2
Have you played around with different formats and settings? I'll be the first to admit that a compressed format isn't the same as an MP3, but *my* standard of ripping @ 192 kbps in AAC (Apple's format / MP4) is FAR better than the vast majority of MP3-ripped music files.

Before people start coming up with the wrong conclutions, He dosn't like ANY mp3s because of the massive compression of the audio. Compared to a CD, the audio of mp3s are shit.
blah152 2 years ago
I was waiting for someone to say this xD
4449steam 2 years ago

And what's Steven going to do next, spot-checks of stereos or headphones to see if they're of good enough quality to play his music?
scarred2112 2 years ago
He is not attacking iPod directly. He is attacking the download culture behind it, I believe. Many people have misinterpreted this.

Timetakesusall 2 years ago
No you cock munch it's because they toured for a long time they got were they are today. Through hard work! You're a knob jockey.

I agree, plus, Ipods are not just for dowload music, it has more uses.
I think what he crtizises the most it's the lack of appreciation for tangible formats such as cd and the hollowness of only having music in digital formats.
