None of the adaptions of this tale are entirely true to the original story but this version captures the complexity of the Edmund Dantes character so well. This is by far the best version of this story and the saddest. The final scene of the movie explains it all so well.
If anyone actually cares! All this films and i mean ALL (from 1952 to 2002)are extremly inacurate to the point of absurde. Please the real fans of this story read the book by Alexander Dumas. You will be pleasantly surprised by the original events i promise.
Richard Chamberlein is great, and he's wonderful in this film especially, but I think Robert Donat really embodied Edmond Dantes best of all. I believe it was in 1934, the one with Elissa Landi.
Actually, the best version is by Denys de la Patellière in 1979, but even as a French I can't find anymore this version on DVD, it was a VHS, my parents had. So, sorry, I would die to see that European series but check this
FAITH, yes I too think Richard Chamberlain is a great actor. Back in the 1960's he went to England to study acting, came back and made all those wonderful TV mini-series. I heard he mostly does theater, I wish he would do more movies but he's entitled to pick what pleases him now, I just like to see him on screen, he has that great voice and stage presence.
hahahaaha, this is such a historical bogus!! First Ali Pasha was European ( Albanian, which means he was white), third , he had no doughter, fourth he was killed in a war with turks trying to protect his albanian mini kingdom where was included todays southern Albania and some of today's greek territories (Tesaly). I hate these arrogant and ignorant directors who don't give a shit about historical accurracy and play with reall personalities this way! Fucking retards!!
@Prishtinaification I looked this up and there are 2 Ali Pashas one Albanian and one Egyptian. The Egyptian was born around the same time as Napoleon. In addition this book is based on a story of a tailor who was poor and later became amazingly rich. Dumas was creating a story not detailing actual facts. Plus many Muslim cultures are multiracial so it easy to see why Dumas, of African descent himself, may have portrayed this character as a black women or why the director or writers did.
I understand ,but she mentions Janina the place he ruled ,which means she is talking about albanian Ali Pasha.I know the story, i seen the movie and i red the book. If it is acreated story, then charachters should to be fictional as well ,not historical as for muslim cultures eing mixed,Albania is70%muslim and it is the most homogenous in Europe(95% albanian ethnicity) and religion plays no role in their lives what so ever , they have intermarriages with other religions all the time
I'll have to check this version out. sadly i wish i could find oen that was completely true to the book. The swordfight is entertaining and all, but i would love to see someone depict the absolute desperation that mondago felt in the story. The shock and his entire world crashing down on him, just to lead to his suicide. i think that has so much more impact then a sword fight.
I have always LOVED this scene....probably my favorite of all the scenes in this lavish 1975 production.
This well-made television movie elicted a wealth of memorable performances from it's talented cast, but none more memorable then Richard Chamberlain's.....talk about a striking, sophisticated Count! Small wonder he received a well deserved Emmy nomination for this extraordinary performance.
awesome fu cking end. I loved it. I've seen all of the versions. Alothough I love this one the most I must say that the 2002 version with JIM CAVIEZEL HAS THE BEST ENDING
I think Richard Chamberlain is the best count of Monte Cristo ever.
But I am chocked by something in this film: Hayde, the daughter of Ali Pasha of Janina is a black actress. The director seems to forget that Ali Pasha was albanian, and the mother of Hayde was a greek, so Hayde was a white girl.

@msinvincible2000 MICHAEL TSARION IS THE WORLDS PREMIER CONSPIRACY RESEARCHER/LECTURER/AUTHOR. DR. BILL DEAGLE, LEO ZAGAMI, JORDAN MAXWELL AND ALEXANDRE DUMAS PERE ARE HIGHLY INFORMATIVE AS WELL. P.S. MELTING EUPHORIA IS SIMILAR TO OZRIC TENTACLES AND GONG.
@straightandkink917 I agree with you as well the 2002 film was a very good movie . This version stands up as well but these films are for different mediums
I agree, i don't know how they can even call the 2002 one the count of monte cristo, the only thing it has in common with the story are character names. The count of monte cristo is my favorite book, i would so love to finally see a version thats completely accurate to the book., as well as be acted out well.
To bad they dident fight this dual with light sabers I guess the good count would be using the green light

@smithitt It certainly was a better comedy.

@GrainneMhaol hahaha no I thought it was really good. Completely different. This was a bit boring to be honest.

@smithitt This version is closer to the novel. And the 2002 version was so cheesy. 'I'm a count, not a saint.' larf

@DreadedGuardian no way. Depardieu simply doesn't have the elegance and dignity of Monte Christo

The Robert Donat version (1934) is also excellent. But this is the best modern day version without a doubt.

Best version of the Monte Cristo films in my eyes, i really REALLY despise the 2002 one.
JPearson1987 3 years ago 11
I'm surprised by this. Hard to see why you would despise it.
I quite like the Caviezel version (although I WILL admit there are a few slips as far as "inappropriate phraseology" in this 2002 version).
"Spirit-wise" I think the 2002 version stands up rather well.
