You are analyzing just one take, if they would have done it again, it would have been very different. This is something I noticed with gay singers : we are focusing too much on details and lose track of the big picture. We over-prononce, we produce fake vibrato and fake emotions. Like Liza said : it's not "how?", it's "why?" Like great acting, great singing comes from the inside and we should'nt be too concerned with details, we should be focused what we are singing.
Hi Seth! I've seen you on "My life on the D-list" with Kathy Griffin. I thought you were great on the show and was impressed by your piano playing. Also, I envy you so much for knowing Kathy, I think she's the greatest human being on earth!
Being a professionnal singer myself, I have to disagree with your approach of deconstructing other's singer work note by note. Why do that?
Hey Seth, " vocal damage " or no "vocal damage " ... You are forgetting to mention a few of points about the duet..The MAIN thing is that you are NOT showing them singing in the first place ! The main fact however that you fail to mention is that regardless of what part of Judy;s career she is at there, ( one 2 years after Carnegie Hall ) she knocks Barbra out of the water in every aspect of the song !! Judy knows her way around the songs better , sounds better , looks better singing it ! xo
those are exactly the same faces as i make when i lip sync this medley! Love the song, just got 4 episodes of the judy garland show on dvd, including the barbra episode, and the liza episode(which is adorable!)
By the way, I think that what's supposed to be judy's "vocal damage" sounds good! I love Judy, love love love love loooooooove JUDY!! <3<3<3
Judy Garland must be one of the most misunderstood artistes of all time. There are many myths surrounding the woman and her talents as a singer. I will just say this: When she was singing on her worst day her power and charisma outshone many a singer on their best day. Despite "vocal damage" Garland's phrasing and pitch were impeccable. Her duets with Streisand (and others) also demonstrate Garland's generosity to her stage/video companions. She was also a sensitive and intelligent woman.
@hirchik I couldn't have said it better. Judy could always reach her audience and touch them even when her voice wasn't at it's best. She was a true performer.
I totally agree that "The Night and the Music" moment is the highlight, but you didn't mention my favorite part which is Barbra's and the audience's reaction to it right along with Judy looking quite pleased with herself and a little bow! Stunning.
I love the Seth vids - it's music appreciation with a strong dash of humor. It's NOTHING short of fabulous. I'm a lover of singing and completely understand his fascination for the singers he's made tributes and deconstructions of. =)
I'm just obsessed with the 'Seth deconstructs' vids. When I'm home, I make my ma watch them with me, and they're our favs. I'm obsessed with all the old school Judy and Barbra numbers. Thanks for the tribute analysis
I loves me my SETH! Met him this summer at a taping of his show in NY at "Don't Tell Mama." He's amazing. And I understand the love/hate early/later Barbra connundrum. If you love Show biz, buy his book "Broadway Nights." It's a total guilty pleasure (speaking of which, come on Seth, Hideaway is pretty damn incredible...) and you'll read it in a sitting if you're not careful. The best and funnest "backstage" showbiz account I've read in a very long time.
she didnt say ive still got it ! but she did have it and def had no vocal damage at that stage it came much later and its what i LONG to see please dont keep saying vocal damage you really dont know her work much to keep saying this great songs from the both of them though
omg Seth, were so simpatico! First of I love that you did a video in Honor of Babs' b-day, but I also love that you chose this medley to decontruct,I am also totally obsessed with that weirdly awesome blend of their voices at the end there
P.S. I agree about the only pre-1980 comment, lol, and Im a huge fan of hers
Seth, this was a wonderful video, you did a fascinating decontruction of this iconic duet! I hope you take a look at Judy's other duets ( Lena, Peggy, Tony, and all the other wonderful guests) that we are so lucky to watch... and you to break down.
This was marvelous, had to watch twice.
You are so right on this break down of the duet, I am a believer.
why the "pre 1980"??? I loved YENTL, her 1994 concerts, her Broadway Album and Back to Broadway Album, her Higher Ground Album...her collection of Just For The Record...My God, why "PRE 1080"?????
Because Barbra, um, changed POST 1980. Seth calls it "pre-1980" ... I think of it as her Malibu-Barbie period.
Before she moved to LA, she was an original, you'll never believe how fucking amazing these songs are singer ... POST 1980 she became an I'm-God-And-You-Must-Love-Me entertainer.
Yentl??????? Back to Broadway??????? Higher Ground??????? Are you kidding?
And ALL of her concerts (including the Central Park debacle) are simply embarrassing.
haha you definitely havent watched a lot of Seth's videos then have you? The best part of them are his lip synching! Plus most of the stuff he does is just from cast recordings so there aren't videos to accompany the songs....
That being said i think that this has to be one of my all time favorite duets ever!! Where is talent like this now a days? :(
I love hearing the harmonies on this. So many of the "duet" albums you hear now don't have harmonies, or even unison singing, they just trade off on the melody.
Very funny! I love when you deconstruct Barbra. I think I know every song of hers and each note, too - so when you deconstruct her I know exactly what's coming & it's so funny to hear your observations. I play the "apard" & "mule" quite often and I love Bea doing Don't Rain On My Parade. Just listened to that one again last night (a funny tribute to her today). Anyway - very entertaining!!
This is one of my favorite deconstructions yet! The Hooray For Love Medly is definitely my favorite from Babs' episode of The Judy Garland Show. Truly amazing!
In-freaking-credible!! I loves me some Judy and some Barbra but stick these two together and you have magic! Regardless of Judy's vocal damages she still has it. I have this video on my ipod and just watching these two interact and play off one another is phenomenal.
Thank you for deconstructing this! :) This made my day for sure!
Judy, Judy, Judy!! Love this one most of all!! I smiled the whole way through and when Seth did Barbra then Judy to show who was singing what..God, he is funny! BTW, did I see Jack last Sunday around 130 on around 43 and 10th? We wanted to say hi but seemed stalker-y. I am dreading the end of our 30 days, loving these so much. Thanks Seth!
I'm so happy you deconstructed this song! The video was actually on YouTube for a while and it was my favorite - I was obsessed with it! Then it got taken off :C It was lovely to hear it again.
YAY! FIRST COMMENT! I LOVE YOU SETH! Sorry, but that was exciting! I'd love to see you talk about the recent BARE recording! Or maybe some BATBOY? U have really taught me about singing, aside from being Amaahzing yourself!
