Can the you insert either a PowerBook Duo 210, PowerBook Duo 230, PowerBook Duo 250, PowerBook Duo 270c, PowerBook Duo 280, PowerBook Duo 280c, or a PowerBook Duo 2300c in the Duo Dock (Duo Docks can run with either a 68k or PowerPC Duo laptop.)

The newer, color Duos don't fit in the older docks because the computers are thicker. I would guess the old Duos fit in the newer Docks, but I'm not sure.

they were planning to do something like that with what is now called the "macbook air" but that idea never materiallized

Ok so your are saying that you plug the laptop into the monitor and it becomes a hare drive?

No, the monitor is just a standard monitor, but the contraption beneath it is a dock and in the dock is a hard drive. When you're Duo is docked, you can access to another hard drive -- perfect for making back-ups.

How did you get your dock to turn on automatically? Neither of my Duos will do that when I insert one into my dock.

No, you have to shut the Duo down before inserting it in the Dock.

Well, Macs of the Quadra age (except the AV machines) have a different boot tone (maybe because sound output on these is 8 bit instead of 16 or 24?)
