I started doing standup in Halifax in 2006. I was lucky enough to talk to Irwin a handful of times, he was a brilliant guy. Amazing writer.
I heard more than once from touring Yuks comics that his bit on Raisins, my favorite of his, was born out of a bet. He could craft material fast on anything, so someone bet him he couldn't make raisins funny. He not only bested the challenge, he made raisins unforgettable.
Irwin was an old friend of mine we used to work at a place called the Urban Well in Kits, I was the DJ that would come on after the show. Irwin had his own style and swagger. A gentleman and the type of person that you would feel was an old friend from the moment you met him. A very funny comedian. Comedians would always listen to him and take notes - If Irwin and Brent were on the same stage the house would be roaring with laughter. The Professor will not be forgotten.
Yesterday I saw 'That's My Time' on CTV and was moved to tears of laughter at his jokes, and tears of sadness when I watched segments of Irwin with his father and mother, wife, children and grandchildren. He never missed the chance to say "I love you". He was born to bring laughter into the world and right up to his last moment of life, his heart was connected to those who love him. Thank you, Irwin! My sincere sympathies to his family and close friends.
Irwin Barker was a very, very funny man. I saw his show at Rumors and my face literally ached from laughing so much. May he rest in peace. He will live on in his genius.
Hwas he 58 or 54?
Seems 54 is correct.
