i think its possible to do this in realtime. the great thing of space games is that there there are just many single models and no landscape, unlike in 3d-shooters. lod also works great in space.
thc should sell a modern version of homeworld 2 via steam, just to see how many fans are out here. and of course to earn money^^ its always a bad thing, not to care about the fans. blizzard knows, that a living community is the key to success.
i remember playing this game... the storyline was so wonderfull... i remember the old Bentusi aliens... their weaponary and wisdom... men they should make a movie out of it.. it´s got a very good storyline. I really hope the will make part 3! This game i will never forget...
To answer your question. Although I like this vid a lot, I would not like Homeworld to look like this. The homeworld ship design is something very special and unique. I would like them to build on that design, or even reintroduce redesigned old Homeworld 1, cataclysm and HW2 ships. The special effects and general visuals are cool off course, but Homeworld should stay Homeworld.
to be honest, if homeworld 3 looked like this, i would be disapointed. it looks too much like EVE to me, it has too much artsy looking ships, and is not very realistic. homeworld is about realism more than art, but it brings the art into it.

i know why progenitors had to live. they returned to Pegasus galaxy to fight off the wraith :D an interesting concept. the homeworld galaxy was the staging grounds for the alteans biggest projects. they had to take safety measures so that when they return these projects were still intact in case someone tried to acquire them. unfortunately they never returned. the life that they planted(and possibly alteans that were left behind)made legends out of them and eventually unlocked these secrets

Proper etiquette would have you put the primary content (stargate video) in the title before secondary(homeworld audio). This is well established but evidently you didn't educate yourself before you decided to bait people. To answer your question it better look at least this good since people can do this on their home PCs.

About this homeworld space-sim idea: There is a game Freelancer, and many mods for this game add some homeworld crafts as flyable ships, such as kushan scout, bomber, assault frigate, or taiidan interceptor. Currently I am working on mod that adds that taiidan destroyer. So flying HW ships is not such a distant idea ;)
In Garrys Mod (not nine) there is a game mode called sunrise, in it it allows you to play at multiple ship from deferent games, very cool. right now im fighting a Terran Battlecruiser from SC with a kushan assault frigate from HW1. Verry cool, you should check it out.
oh also they have freelancer ships that you can buy and fly too.

The Bentusi are not dead, in Homeworld Cataclysm, a single vessel managed to escape to another galaxy through a massive hyperspace gate, just before it was destroyed by Kiith Somtaaw.
Imo, Homeworld 3 should be a little bit more like Galactic Civilisation (colonisation of planets/customizable spacestations and ships) but it should still be in realtime, and the focus should be on space combat rather than planetary conquest. The planets should just be an extra economic resource, and maybe act as anchors for orbital weapon platforms and logistics stations. These things, coupled up with graphics, cranked-up to todays standards, would be awesome :)
No, not exactly, just take the good parts of SoaSE and implement them in a homeworld game. A game with focus on space, and with a closeup perspective of every ship and all the action. And of course the homeworld storyline.

I'm afraid you will have to. Sierra bought the rights to the series from Relic, then mothballed it rather than to sell it to some other company (Maybe they ran Relic out of business, dunno). Anyhow, Sierra has the rights to it but has explicitly said they aren't planning to make another part of the series. Sadface :(
Fact is there is a mod for HW2, a complete remake of the game with BSG models and fights. Haven't tried it myself, but from what i heard it produces pretty convincing BSG-scenarios.
yes, the backing track is taken from homeworld Cataclysms First mission, the first objective where you have to fight the bombers off of the nabaal ion frigates, homeworlds 1 & cataclysm were SO epic ... i was dissapointed with homeworld 2 because technoligically it took a leap 100 years foreward, but what happened to the alien ships, no everything looks like an icebreaker ... and the repair and harvesting has gone backwards too, instead of pda beams, its all welding and clamps ...

Stylistically, I hope it looks nothing like this. The gorgeous artwork of the HW series is one of its most iconic features. They should stick with that and simply next-gen it up.
From a technical standpoint, doing a space RTS with this GFX quality isn't that hard (see X3:Terran Conflict).

For fans of Homeworld it looks like the rumours could be true - Relic Entertainment has dropped a huge hint that it's working on a third instalment in the space-based RTS series.
During a recent visit to the Canadian studio's offices in Vancouver, which you can see right now on Eurogamer TV, we quizzed senior team members on the existence of Homeworld 3.
Speculation that THQ-owned Relic was working on a new version emerged last year with the news that the US publisher had acquired the franchise rights from Vivendi.
"We're really happy the IP has made its way home, and yeah, we're definitely looking at it. We'll see what happens in the future," Dawn of War II lead designer Jonny Ebbert told us.
Asked whether it was one of the studio's current projects, Ebbert said: "There's always that chance." And are they excited about showing it to the world? "Yes, very, very!" he chuckled.
We also tried it on with Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor designer Chris Degnan, asking him how Homeworld 3 was looking. He replied: "As it always has - behind closed doors. Blacked off. Homeworld 3, obviously, I'm not at liberty to tell you anything about. So, good try!"
Three announced games are in development at Relic: Dawn of War II, Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor and Company of Heroes Online, being co-developed with Shanda for the Asian market.
General manager Tarrnie Williams admitted there were "three or four" titles in the works at Relic. "It depends how you count; whether you use the old math or the new math." He declined to explain the difference.
Relic's original Homeworld released on PC in 1999, with a sequel following in 2003.
Ebbert added: "Homeworld's always been dear to our heart; it's what put us on the map, it was our first product, and I think it will always have a special place in our hearts."

As destroyer you'd be swarmed by bombers and corvetes so that isn't a good idea xD

About this homeworld space-sim idea: There is a game Freelancer, and many mods for this game add some homeworld crafts as flyable ships, such as kushan scout, bomber, assault frigate, or taiidan interceptor. Currently I am working on mod that adds that taiidan destroyer. So flying HW ships is not such a distant idea ;)

In Garrys Mod (not nine) there is a game mode called sunrise, in it it allows you to play at multiple ship from deferent games, very cool. right now im fighting a Terran Battlecruiser from SC with a kushan assault frigate from HW1. Verry cool, you should check it out.
oh also they have freelancer ships that you can buy and fly too.

@warmadkiller It's extremely hard to find. It's most often refered to as "Homeworld freedrive mod".
If you want this mod, then either A)- google "Homeworld smallfishlxy" (smallfishlxy is author of the mod) and go to first hit from the list (leading to a relicnews forum thread), or B) - go to jstonline(dot)homeworldtrinity(dot)org and look for "Homeworld Freedrive" mod in downloads section.

The Bentusi are not dead, in Homeworld Cataclysm, a single vessel managed to escape to another galaxy through a massive hyperspace gate, just before it was destroyed by Kiith Somtaaw.

Imo, Homeworld 3 should be a little bit more like Galactic Civilisation (colonisation of planets/customizable spacestations and ships) but it should still be in realtime, and the focus should be on space combat rather than planetary conquest. The planets should just be an extra economic resource, and maybe act as anchors for orbital weapon platforms and logistics stations. These things, coupled up with graphics, cranked-up to todays standards, would be awesome :)

No, not exactly, just take the good parts of SoaSE and implement them in a homeworld game. A game with focus on space, and with a closeup perspective of every ship and all the action. And of course the homeworld storyline.

I'm afraid you will have to. Sierra bought the rights to the series from Relic, then mothballed it rather than to sell it to some other company (Maybe they ran Relic out of business, dunno). Anyhow, Sierra has the rights to it but has explicitly said they aren't planning to make another part of the series. Sadface :(

Fact is there is a mod for HW2, a complete remake of the game with BSG models and fights. Haven't tried it myself, but from what i heard it produces pretty convincing BSG-scenarios.

yes, the backing track is taken from homeworld Cataclysms First mission, the first objective where you have to fight the bombers off of the nabaal ion frigates, homeworlds 1 & cataclysm were SO epic ... i was dissapointed with homeworld 2 because technoligically it took a leap 100 years foreward, but what happened to the alien ships, no everything looks like an icebreaker ... and the repair and harvesting has gone backwards too, instead of pda beams, its all welding and clamps ...

For me HW2 was (and still is) great.
HW1 has "hard" hud. I mean you need more than few days to get used to it (or maybe beacuse i started with HW2 now 1 =D)

Actually, THQ, which owns Relic, has re-acquired the license for Homeworld, and has said they're (Relic) "definitely" looking into doing a 3rd one.
So hope remains. :-D
Stylistically, I hope it looks nothing like this. The gorgeous artwork of the HW series is one of its most iconic features. They should stick with that and simply next-gen it up.
From a technical standpoint, doing a space RTS with this GFX quality isn't that hard (see X3:Terran Conflict).

-nobody knew that there will be Fallout 3 and would you look at that there is one =D. High grades (and sales) beacuse game makers didnt promise anything->ppl are happy only that F3 poped out of nowhere =) (almost)
-on the other hand look at DOOM3. Game developers promised so many things that in the end game turned out to a shit... (for me for sure im not certain abaut rest of ppl)

For fans of Homeworld it looks like the rumours could be true - Relic Entertainment has dropped a huge hint that it's working on a third instalment in the space-based RTS series.
During a recent visit to the Canadian studio's offices in Vancouver, which you can see right now on Eurogamer TV, we quizzed senior team members on the existence of Homeworld 3.

Speculation that THQ-owned Relic was working on a new version emerged last year with the news that the US publisher had acquired the franchise rights from Vivendi.
"We're really happy the IP has made its way home, and yeah, we're definitely looking at it. We'll see what happens in the future," Dawn of War II lead designer Jonny Ebbert told us.

Asked whether it was one of the studio's current projects, Ebbert said: "There's always that chance." And are they excited about showing it to the world? "Yes, very, very!" he chuckled.
We also tried it on with Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor designer Chris Degnan, asking him how Homeworld 3 was looking. He replied: "As it always has - behind closed doors. Blacked off. Homeworld 3, obviously, I'm not at liberty to tell you anything about. So, good try!"

Three announced games are in development at Relic: Dawn of War II, Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor and Company of Heroes Online, being co-developed with Shanda for the Asian market.
General manager Tarrnie Williams admitted there were "three or four" titles in the works at Relic. "It depends how you count; whether you use the old math or the new math." He declined to explain the difference.

Relic's original Homeworld released on PC in 1999, with a sequel following in 2003.
Ebbert added: "Homeworld's always been dear to our heart; it's what put us on the map, it was our first product, and I think it will always have a special place in our hearts."
