The reason conversion rates are so low is that Judaism does not actively try to convert people. In order to convert, you must do it for the love of the religion and the willingness to follow the laws and commandments, and for no other reason. However, when they do, converts are no different than other Jews.
ALL Jews are equally Jewish. U are either born to a Jewish mother (or either parent if reform) OR u convert. Makes no difference.

Now, some of the Ashkenazim are somewhat dark and look like typical Sephardim, but so many of the Jews you see who are Ashkneazim look just like most Europeans. This is not to say that there is not a common ancestry. But there are clear differences in appearance, generally. These are generalities.

Reform is a small movement that started only not too long ago, in Germany, they dont really go according to Jewish law, for instance... they dont really keep shabbat. theyre conversions are not considered real, and especially in Israel, they dont even play around with that, they dont at all consider it legitimate.
I am no expert on Jewish law and would never say I was, but believe that in Reform Judaism, you are considered Jewish if either parent is. I know that is not traditional. I know a few Jewish people that have a Jewish father and they really identify with being Jewish. One told me he just feels totally Jewish inside.

While there were a large amount of converts throughout the centuries, today's Jews retain remarkably similar genetics, whether you're from Israel, America, Russia, Germany, Iraq, Morocco, wherever.

@whatsinthatbox There are Jews elsewhere besides Israel. In Judaism, there is a whole procedure for how people are converted. The reason conversion rates are so low is that Judaism does not actively try to convert people. In order to convert, you must do it for the love of the religion and the willingness to follow the laws and commandments, and for no other reason. However, when they do, converts are no different than other Jews.

ALL Jews make up a nation (Israel - the original homeland). It doesn't matter where that Jew lives, he is still considered a member of that nation. The religion of Jews is Judaism. I don't find any of this all that complicated.

I know that many Jews have common genetics in the sense of ancient ancestry (to the Levant). I am also aware that Ashkenazim look the way they do partly by virtue of living in Europe fro >2000 years (not 100- as you indicated). There was a recent discovery of a Mikva in Mainz (German Rhineland) which predates the birth of Christ. The phenotype of Jews or anybody for that matter is not only altered by environment as you suggest, but also due to admixture.

The Jews were exiled about 2000 years ago, and they have different skin color depending on where they went, if you take an ashkenaz Jew and make him tan, he would look just like a sephardic/mizrachi jew.

And that continues to this day. While Jews usually sahre common genetic material (except for total converts), they vary from one extreme to the other phenotypically. I live in Canada and I personally do not know any "tan" Jews unless they have been n the sun a lot ... lol. Most are lily white and very European looking to me. That doesn't make them any less Jewish than darker skinned "variety" ;)

@zoomzoom3211 Many Ashkenazim who haven't mixed with Sephardim have a much higher percentage of green eyes and blue eyes and light hair. Now, some of the Ashkenazim are somewhat dark and look like typical Sephardim, but so many of the Jews you see who are Ashkneazim look just like most Europeans. This is not to say that there is not a common ancestry. But there are clear differences in appearance, generally. These are generalities.

Personally, the ancient Hebrews were said to be a mixture of Indo-Europeans and Semites who formed into a nation. This included the Hittites who are related to the Kurds and people who came from Europe probably and to the Middle East. Also, some say that some Sephardic people have some Slavic DNA. I am not sure if it is a myth. But people mixed more than they think. It's normal. Men meet women.

That is sometimes true of the Ashkenaz, but in Israel people are more and more mixed. One thing interesting about the Ashkenaz is they have some Eurasian and maybe Turkic DNA that is basically not found in Sephardic populations or the Arabs of the Mediterranean. People mixed and formed unions in different locales.

Its not true. @zoomzoom3211 There is no evidence that the majority of Jews who lived in the land actually left. It's probably that the elites left. The rest converted to Christianity and Islam over time and a tiny minority remained Jewish.
In the 9th century there were still many Jews there. There were Jewish communities already in Europe centuries before the Bar Kochba revolt and they were also in other areas of the world before that.

@Lagolop By real Jewish law, (halacha), as stated in text, a person is Jewish only if his mother is Jewish. If the father is Jewish and the mother isn't, the person isnt Jewish. Reform is a small movement that started only not too long ago, in Germany, they dont really go according to Jewish law, for instance... they dont really keep shabbat. theyre conversions are not considered real, and especially in Israel, they dont even play around with that, they dont at all consider it legitimate.

I am no expert on Jewish law and would never say I was, but believe that in Reform Judaism, you are considered Jewish if either parent is. I know that is not traditional. I know a few Jewish people that have a Jewish father and they really identify with being Jewish. One told me he just feels totally Jewish inside.

I see this at my kenissa, we have some black, Iranian, and Chinese people who converted. They are Jews but are not treated as such by some of the members born into the tribe.

I suspect that part of the reason is that their appearance flies in the face of what is considered "Jewish" in North America (usually bagels and lox, certainly nothing Arab). I speak for myself when I say that I don't have fond memories of eating challah because I eat pita. I don't care for bagels and my grandma's ghormeh sabzi beats any borscht.

Yes there are laws to determine who is a Jew but very simple .... be born to a Jewish mother OR convert.
Converts are always accepted and often considered MORE Jewish than those born into the faith. It's just that Jews do not proselytize; no missions. There is a difference. Trust me, I know about Jewish converts and how they are accepted ....
