Dude you kick ass! You didn't learn wrong at all. You're just doing your thing man. It's great! Nice technique and all the fills are very clean. Never stop playing.
Sounds great. Don't worry about playing "wrong." I am sure you aren't worrying about if you have been playing like that for 30 years. It seems to be working for you. When I was 8 or 9, I sat at a drumset for the first time and played a beat open handed, until my dads drummer got back in from break and corrected me. I wonder how different I would play had he not corrected me. Maybe for the better.
Very nice dude. And by the way, I have seen a couple right-handed drummers play like you do. Question, what is that little trashy sounding thing about the tamborine you're playing?
I was just getting ready to comment on you being left handed and playing set up right handed. When I read your comment. I've never seen that before. You obviously know what your doing. good job
MAN YOU did play it almost right. Pauliewanna gave you props but you didn't do it as good as him. You played in sync. the distinction was that he spun the drum sticks and was accurate.
Sorry bro, but you haven't gotten even close to getting this right. Time Stand Still is one of my favorite Peart drumlines, I've been playing it for years. Listen more closely to what Neil is doing and keep working on it!!
This is the Gary Chester New Breed style. If you were to give a five year old sticks this is how they would play naturally. No need to cross sticks. Nice work man!
ok first of all, quit criticizing the guy for the way he plays.. He's covering one of the best drummers ever and he did an amazing job, so obviously his way is working very well. I say 2 thumbs way up, great job.
LOL!!!.. I don't think I have seen anything like this. Your right handed and your not playing cross hand.. I am trying to follow along, but I get confused by your drumming.. But dude it kicked ass.. LMAO!!!.. Who said you have to be politically correct huh.. :)
Thank you everyone for the kind comments. BTW, I'm not left-handed! I just learned "wrong". I never understood why anyone would cross their arms?!?!? ;-)
foxkieran: Yes I'm a huge Carter Beauford fan, but I played "open handed" long before DMB was popular. I am self-taught and simply learned "wrong". ;-)
@foxkieran also "Gas Lipstick" from HIM does as well. I don't think there is technically a right or wrong way to play drums. You play the way that makes you feel the most comfortable. I learned cross-armed, but can see the benefit of playing open armed.
When it comes to style, in my opinion, no one can really teach you. I never had drum lessons so I hold the sticks loosely too becuase it's comfortable. And awhile back, out of curiosity i read a drum book, it turns out that I was doing everything right. I think it's all about the drummer's preference.
nice job. but you need to practice a little better stick control with the right hand. do you see how your hits on the snare are a little loose, problem with that style is over time, you can develop carpal tunnel syndrome faster.
Uh...I've been playing this way for 20 years. So I'm not worried about Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or anything else. I'm very comfortable and loose when I play. But thanks for the comment!
I'm a rush fan but have never really heard this song...awesome sound and playing though! it's really weird to see someone play a ride cymbal right next to them with their left hand.
Dude you kick ass! You didn't learn wrong at all. You're just doing your thing man. It's great! Nice technique and all the fills are very clean. Never stop playing.

That hi-hat wobble would get irritating to me really quickly. (I had one that did that, it was like playing a moving target).

OMG! This totally kicks ass! I can only begin to imagine how many HOURS it took this drummer to master the drum line for this song.
BTW: My natural reaction at a drum set is uncrossed arms as well. At first, I thought I was left handed!

Actually, the style you use is called "open handed."
Don't know if you're a Dave Matthews fan, but his drummer uses the same technique.
