I once had this happen to me... but nothing to the extreme as THAT. It's astounding that your pc didn't crash because mine usually would a few minutes of that tearing. What happened to me was my video card would incorrectly read the data and it would stretch the model in a infinite direction. It got so bad I could see through some models and actually could cheat. =)
