@RD19902010 It's simply experience.... for instance, US military thought going into Vietnam was that guns on fighter jets was an obsolete idea. Boy were they wrong. Older MiGs were shooting the more high-tech US Fighters out of the skies after their missiles failed and they didn't have guns to defend themselves. Craft like the F-4 had to be fitted with external gun pods to make up for the difference.

@LewisTee08 F-15s. The Typhoon (they aren't called "Eurofighters" anymore) went into mock combat with F-15s and soundly beat the older fighters. People keep saying it was F-22s, but no one can verify when or where this supposedly happened.
The Typhoon has also entered mock combat with the Su-30, and the Typhoon pilots even said the Su-30 was better.

The Typhoon is a dogfighter, like the F-16. The F-22 is an interceptor/air superiority aircraft like the F-15. They have their superior qualities in their respective profiles.

By the way, the British designation is AH-1, not AH-64 (I know, it's confusing because the American Cobra's designation is also AH-1). American designation for the Longbow Apache is AH-64D.

Open your eyes, the US military encompasses the entire world. We have bases all over the globe and massive fleets in every major body of water. Nothing makes a better political bargaining chip than having a Supercarrier of of your coast.

@jc9ball Well, the American Air superiority is simply based on a) war with underdeveloped countries and b) more technology, more planes, more surveilance. in air to air combat american pilots are absolutely average, especially compared with israeli or russian pilots. when did america fight the last time with an equal opponent?
even in WWII they moved in only after germany was already weakened by russia and england.

@RD19902010 Air Superiority. That's exactly the point. Superiority. The simple idea is "Who wants to pick a fight with someone who's far better armed than you are?" Even the best pilots would love better equipment in a fight.
If you go into a gunfight with someone with an assault rifle, and all you have is a small caliber pistol, who's in the better position? You might be the greatest shot in the world, but you'd feel a lot better if you had a bigger gun.

@RD19902010 It's simply experience.... for instance, US military thought going into Vietnam was that guns on fighter jets was an obsolete idea. Boy were they wrong. Older MiGs were shooting the more high-tech US Fighters out of the skies after their missiles failed and they didn't have guns to defend themselves. Craft like the F-4 had to be fitted with external gun pods to make up for the difference.
From there, it's just the US saying 'hey, let's not get caught with our pants down again.'

@LewisTee08 F-15s. The Typhoon (they aren't called "Eurofighters" anymore) went into mock combat with F-15s and soundly beat the older fighters. People keep saying it was F-22s, but no one can verify when or where this supposedly happened.
The Typhoon has also entered mock combat with the Su-30, and the Typhoon pilots even said the Su-30 was better.

The Typhoon is a dogfighter, like the F-16. The F-22 is an interceptor/air superiority aircraft like the F-15. They have their superior qualities in their respective profiles.

@LewisTee08 "only" thing superior? The Raptor is faster, has a lower RCS. In an engagement, the Raptor has the element of surprise with superior BVR capabilities. But the Typhoon is built for dogfighting and swing-role capacity.
The last thing a Raptor pilot would want is a Typhoon behind him, but the Typhoon most likely wouldn't see the Raptor at all before it was over.

The British Defense Research Agency simulted battles against Su 35s, result the Rafale and the Su35 were equal the EF was superior 4,5 to1.

Although the specific results were unreleased, RAF Pilots went on record saying the Su-30 Flanker-H displayed superior flight characteristics and maneuverability to the Typhoon.

By the way, the British designation is AH-1, not AH-64 (I know, it's confusing because the American Cobra's designation is also AH-1). American designation for the Longbow Apache is AH-64D.

Open your eyes, the US military encompasses the entire world. We have bases all over the globe and massive fleets in every major body of water. Nothing makes a better political bargaining chip than having a Supercarrier of of your coast.
The USAF alone has a bigger space program than the EU and China combined, the US has the exact location of every military target worldwide, we know exactly where to strike no matter who the opponent may be.

This is why Japan went apeshit around this time and invaded Manchuria. Isolationism failed miserably at protecting American soil, the US military industrial complex created by the Eisenhower admin and the Peace Through Strength policy by Reagan are the only effective methods of protecting the US. They have worked no nation dares to attack us.

An American Abrams for example was built to be able to fight 5-10 Russian tanks at a time with its far superior tech and weaponry.
