@olllHashedFetish Absolutely, and that's the way music evolves ... from Leadbelly, to Davey Graham, to Taste and Rory Gallagher ... and the result is some first rate music from all
Rory Gallagher is one of the greatest guitarist ever but the best version of this song is from Davy Graham, on his 1964 album: Folk, Blues and Beyond, absolutely astonishing guitar track.
Gallagher can sing a blues song and make it sound like he really means it, as compared to many (Robert Plant for one) who just rattle them off - does Plant know that the "killing floor" reference was Howlin' Wolf comparing a dance floor to an abbatoir (at least, I think that's it) ? Robert doesn't sound like it - but Rory puts his heart into it, esp. the longing songs, like this one and As The Crow Flies -- he always moves me, with his performances, it's always about heart and soul with Rory
I totally agree Rory has a way better Blues voice, but Plant did learn to sing from the blues, he loves the blues, but if you want pure raw blues vocals you for sure hit Rory.
thanks - not to diss Robert, his delivery is unique, and the Olde-English spin he gives some songs is very nice -- that sort of Celtic rue & melancholy. But I listen to Rory a lot more often
I can see where you're coming from, but Plant was obsessed with the blues in the pre-Zep days, and use to try pick up all the rare recordings of the black american bluesmen. So chances are he does know the meaning of the lyrics. Love Zeppelin, Love Rory :D
fair enough - yes I was just spouting an offhand random opinion without checking it out - thanks for clueing me in. I respect Plant more, thinking that he wasn't simply exploiting the blues but paying tribute - also nice that Zep went into their own cultural roots with their UK-sounding ballads and acoustic pieces - that's a nice synthesis, melding two cultures - Anglo & Afro go well together, actually
yes, I never saw Zep live ,but did catch Rory in about 1984 in Washington DC, so I'm swayed in his direction - plus I had both the first Zep LP and also the Taste LP (Rory w/hair in face on the cover) -- Taste was more earthy and gutsy, while Zep was high-voltage and a little sinister (e.g., dazed & confused etc) - but thinking back, both bands were too good to set against each other - gotta love em both
hey we didn't have youtube either, back in the 60-s - you have digital music, the internet etc - when I was a kid we made crystal radio sets and grounded 'em to radiators, and listened through single earplugs to AM stations - you have it pretty good, all things considered :)

Any Chords?

What's great about this one is the minor motif, you can work off it as other bands did, but this is the one.
Imagine Rory doing Van Morrison's "Moondance" for a musical trip.

Yeah, the English folky Zep is excellent, shows the breadth they had as a band :)
And course Rory played all sorts, blues, rock, folk, funk and almost jazz ;)
