ABC40 WGGB News at 6 open - January 2009

As a former Springfield resident (now a Rhode Islander), I was curious to see what has happened to the local stations that I used to watch. Kathy Tobin is still with Channel 40 (at least when this was posted), and former Channel 22 anchor Dave Madsen is still in the area. Ray Herschel was their main nightly news anchor for years. I still remember an interview he did with one of his old college friends, Henry Winkler (yes, he went to college with "The Fonz").

My parents watch this every morning. It is on ABC and FOX6. its goes on ABC at 6:00 and FOX6 later.

It's not Fox 16...it's Fox 6 (the channel that the newly-created Fox affiliate is on via the local cable provider).

I love it, love it, love it. It's old-school style over-the-top, orchestra-style news music, lots of teases, flying graphics. But lose those mic flags that are about as big as a theater marquee! Which channel am I watching, ABC40 or Fox16, and why am I not watching the other channel instead? Alternate the logos.

Amazing and sad to see how grubby Springfield looks, and to see long time anchor Ray Herschel reduced to street reporting after many years as a well-respected anchor at Channel 40. Used to be a great New England city!

Their presentation is a bit awkward, so they really need to work on closing verbal gaps and taking cues quick to create a fuller newscast. But overall, not bad.
