I've not yet reached a stage in my life where I can afford private healthcare, despite working every hour I possibly can. I can't deny there are many problems with the system, but were it not for the NHS I'd be either dead or up to my arse in debt. Enough said.

The facts are that we spend far more on a broken system here per person per annum than they do, and our economy is already collapsed. It's not 100% free, in a lot of countries they have a 2 or 3% tax that helps to pay for it, along with extra taxes on cigarettes and alcohol that also help. But it ensures medicine for all.

If you're a soldier, then its great because you're rushed to the front of the line because you're an investment, and they spent good money on you so they want to keep you working. If you're a family member, be prepared to wait in line. A long time. I myself sat in line four hours just to get a prescription filled whereas had my dad got it he would have been first.

You have cause and effect mixed up. It is not because of its government that Ireland does well economically, at least in the last 20 years or so, it is because of its people. Your wonderful government programs of free schooling, healthcare, and unemployment benefits have not caused you to be successful, the labor of your people has. Your government public debt is at 20,000 euros per person, including children, retirees, bums, and those below the tax line. Was it worth it?

According to your argument, there should be some return on investment, but your government is borrowing more than ever at a higher rate than ever with no signs of stopping. There are 1.8 million people with jobs in Ireland and dropping, so that's actually 50,000 euros in debt per working person, and I have no idea how many of those people working actually pay tax, probably less than half, so lets call that 100,000 euro per tax payer at 10% interest. @irishfrankie last i checked, ireland is one of the PIIGS countries, meaning the 5 countries with the weakest economies. but let's stipulate that it DOES work for ireland. ireland is smaller than the united staes in every respect. there are fewer differences among people in ireland than the u.s. too, and this makes reconciliation into one big plan, again, impossible without a substantial drop in living standards. thus, at the very least, ireland is not a useful example to sell this to the u.s.

@TimeWarp66 When the minimum wage increases, the prices at all the grocery stores increases. When the sin tax is increased on alcohol, the price of alcohol goes up. Companies are not arbitrarily increasing prices. All the companies in competition are hit by increasing taxes the same. I worked for a oil retailer for a few years. Whenever Conoco or Exon increased the prices they charged us, we increased the prices to consumers the same amount. BTW, I think we are on the same side.

And technically, the rich pay more money either way... since they make more, they pay more in both a flat tax and progressive tax system.

@sketchbook1 We have a VAT tax (value added tax) on all goods and services except essentials. But that means goods become more expensive again and this effects the poorest worse.
If you have a flat tax then the standard rate has to be raised in order to make up for the lack of income at the higher levels been taxed at a higher rate. This effects the poorer even worse as another 5-7% of their money goes towards tax! They simply cant afford to lose this much and will stop paying in.

We had a hospital in the next town over. Its was called the butcherblock by the people who lived there. Because people would go in for minor stuff and die. No one in town would go there. It closed and the people were glad it did. The govt. was there they didnt do anything. What would happen to them under the new plan?

Because the best product is the one that pays the best to make. When you pay good money for junk, they have no reason to do better. Our problem today.
Because Real estate agents and homeownders were asking for more money then the home was really worth. They doubled and even tripled the prices in some markets which were unsustainable and people could not afford. Banks made loans that they knew people could not pay off and created predatory lending practices which also played a huge role in our housing crisis.

Money and credit are controlled by the gov't. There is no free market in money. Credit is created out of nothing by the banking cartel. This is fiat money. It exists by decree. We have not had for the most part free markets since the 1800's so in that you are right.
However, The real estate industry is one place which does come close. Government does not determine how much homes sell for. The facts are that we spend far more on a broken system here per person per annum than they do, and our economy is already collapsed. If you're a soldier, then its great because you're rushed to the front of the line because you're an investment, and they spent good money on you so they want to keep you working. If you're a family member, be prepared to wait in line. A long time. I myself sat in line four hours just to get a prescription filled whereas had my dad got it he would have been first.

However, there are only about three million armed service members world wide, and even then the system is heavily flawed and bloated. Now imagine the same system with 340 million people. A historic mess... just ask the people of Canada or Great Britain.

Yes a lot of people engage in healthcare fraud but that doesn't make the entire system wrong.
Paying for healthcare costs out of one's pocket with a modest living often places a regular family into debt.

As an Irish person I woul like to thank our socialisim for the medical card system that means if u can afford healthcare insurance you get it for free. And for the Unemployment benefit for those who can not work and for which their is no jobs can afford a life which includes entertainment oh and for free education that includes university and funding for master degrees. Your wonderful government programs of free schooling, healthcare, and unemployment benefits have not caused you to be successful, the labor of your people has. Your government public debt is at 20,000 euros per person, including children, retirees, bums, and those below the tax line. Was it worth it?

There are 1.8 million people with jobs in Ireland and dropping, so that's actually 50,000 euros in debt per working person, and I have no idea how many of those people working actually pay tax, probably less than half, so lets call that 100,000 euro per tax payer at 10% interest. @irishfrankie last i checked, ireland is one of the PIIGS countries, meaning the 5 countries with the weakest economies. but let's stipulate that it DOES work for ireland. ireland is smaller than the united staes in every respect. there are fewer differences among people in ireland than the u.s. too, and this makes reconciliation into one big plan, again, impossible without a substantial drop in living standards. thus, at the very least, ireland is not a useful example to sell this to the u.s.

Our problem was our banking ties to the sub prime sector in US banking! Ireland does not have a weak economy we stil have growin exports and are due for 2.7% growth year along with disinfaltion which means our economy overall should grow by circa a 1%. All this while still providing 4 unemployed and weakest n society take that any day over an armed forces

The government gets money by force. Private businesses get money by offering a good or service you voluntarily choose to purchase.

Companies are not arbitrarily increasing prices. All the companies in competition are hit by increasing taxes the same. I worked for a oil retailer for a few years. Whenever Conoco or Exon increased the prices they charged us, we increased the prices to consumers the same amount. BTW, I think we are on the same side.

It is a system designed so that if everyone had a choice at birth they would choose taxing people at increments because a flat tax means that the poorest would pay a far higher proportion of their gross than that of the wealthy. It also allows them to retain more of their wealth so that they may be able to invest it themselves to grow their wealth!

And technically, the rich pay more money either way... since they make more, they pay more in both a flat tax and progressive tax system.

@sketchbook1 We have a VAT tax (value added tax) on all goods and services except essentials. But that means goods become more expensive again and this effects the poorest worse.
If you have a flat tax then the standard rate has to be raised in order to make up for the lack of income at the higher levels been taxed at a higher rate. This effects the poorer even worse as another 5-7% of their money goes towards tax! They simply cant afford to lose this much and will stop paying in.

We had a hospital in the next town over. Its was called the butcherblock by the people who lived there. Because people would go in for minor stuff and die. No one in town would go there. Because Real estate agents and homeownders were asking for more money then the home was really worth. They doubled and even tripled the prices in some markets which were unsustainable and people could not afford. Banks made loans that they knew people could not pay off and created predatory lending practices which also played a huge role in our housing crisis.

However, The real estate industry is one place which does come close. Government does not determine how much homes sell for. The owner, Real estate agent/agency home style and size along with most importantly location do. Because of the insane prices being asked for it helped precipitate some of our current mess.
