Although I only vaguely remember watching The Gong Show as I was a toddler in the 70's,but the unpredictability and spontaneity of the original can't be duplicated today and neither can Chuck Barris.
Consider that Chuck did not want to host the show. He got dumped into it. He hated the camera. He only did it to keep the show on the air. He was not stoned. These were just nervous reactions to something that he was uncomfortable with. What would you look like if you were taken from your desk and tossed in front of a camera and audience and told that your job was on the line? He made it work. From off the camera to on the camera. There will never be another Gong Show.
@offstride Chuck was a producer and writer, not on-camera talent. The original host was sacked at the last minute and Chuck had to take over. He rose to the occasion and then some. This show could have been a real loser and Chuck made it a classic part of the seventies. As the years went on, the show got wilder and funnier. Chuck, we need you back!
Right ...in fact, what used to make me laugh was his nervous clap punctuating every sentence at random times. This became so common that the audience began to clap along with him when they saw it coming.
I almost peed when I the priest came on stage and couldn't read the cue cards. I just watched confessions of a dangerous mind last night for the 4th time and I love that movie and the whole story.
This show is pure anarchic genius and Chuck Barris was so far ahead back then he's behind a lot of what's on TV now as far as reality shows, which suck hard, because he's a genius and the people behind today's shows aren't ... even ... close. Gimme a B!
OMG!! chuck is THE BEST!! i'm soo glad you post this gong show stuff! just the way i remember i as a kid! I lived for this show!! why oh why isnt this shit on dvd???!!! the "give me a b" i still do that to this day LOL
I agree completely. To re-do it would accomplish nothing but to sully the original. Rather than remake GOOD old stuff and turn it into today's crap, I just wish they'd stick to making their horrible crap from scratch.
I can't believe this is on here... :-) I used to laugh so hard at this show and all of Chuck Barris' antics. The "father" calls Chuckie baby a "loon". Hahahaha. This is when tv and humor was entertaining and not killed by being overly-PC like it is today. My favorite was the "unknown comic".
Actualy it was but he didint want to use his real name MJ so he used the alius Carl Oliver---and he won on this very eposode!...just some info for ya...
With all the horrible singers who go on "American Idol", this show needs to be brought back...but ONLY if it can capture the same zaniness of the 70s version.
Way ahead of it's time. I still miss it. Chuckie rules !

that bit of the priest who can't read the cue cards ranks right up there, IMHO, with anything by Foster Brooks as the funniest stuff out there!!!
