I used to do this with my hamsters too when I was little, only I stacked them horizontally 3 high so that the books couldn't fall on the hamsters and hurt them.

My hamster was so cool, he had a wire cage and he did monkey bars all night long. His name was Happy III (Happy the third). He died a year and a half later. But he was tough. He even survived a stroke! (Never was the same after that though). I remember making a maze out of a small cardboard box, and extra cardboard. My brother and I connected two mazes we made together. I miss my Happy, but he's in hampster heaven now :)

it's hilarious how people can judge someone they've never met before with "animal cruelty."
