I'll probably sound naive but I didn't even know about the whole dark skin vs light skin issue until I started dating my girlfriend. To me it's actually incredibly sad that that sort of thing goes on. It's one thing to have a preference but it's another to tell someone "oh you'd look more beautiful if you weren't you."

May be simple asthetics. Most people tend to gravitate to neutral, or lighter colors, subtle pastels. Cars, the upholstry, color of paint. You're right! Totally an American thing because it goes back to slavery. Lighter skinned slaves would work in the slaveowner's house or were thought to get better treatment (especially if they were children of the slaveowner). I am married to a "black chick" for 10 years and I'm white. So it is from that perspective that I am commenting. I really do not think skin tone is the primary reason why many guys might not find a black girl attractive. At least White guys. I think it's more about hair. There really isn't much you can do with kinky hair except braid it or use a weave which usually looks silly and very fake to me. May be simple asthetics. Most people tend to gravitate to neutral, or lighter colors, subtle pastels. Cars, the upholstry, color of paint. Rarely when painting a room do you select a dark brown and put a darker brown or black with it. Takes a deeper appeciation to accept and like darker colors. You're right! Totally an American thing because it goes back to slavery. Lighter skinned slaves would work in the slaveowner's house or were thought to get better treatment (especially if they were children of the slaveowner). It was a method of survival that turned into the status quo for success. Basically, our America instilled into our minds even as children that the lighter or fairer(closer to being white) your complexion, the more attractive you become.
