Before my family left for the America's in the 1600's they (my ancestors that is) lived in Scotland. We've been able to trace the lineage back far enough to know that we had family members in the original Black Watch. I wish I knew more about them...but that aside, I love watching military marches, especially European ones. I'm in the US Army and most our "ceremonies" always seem so....cheap...and....I don't know..."wonky" for lack of a better word.

but as an outsider, what is the purpose of those helmets? not to be disrespectful at all, but they do not seem practical for battle, the soldier would have trouble seeing and to be able to move quick and they don't really seem to have a purpose other than looking cool. I understand it's a tradition but there must be a reason for them to look like that?

@anbr90 I assume you are referring to the bearskins, and I believe they were used on the battlefield just to add an extra bit of height to the soldiers making them more imposing on the battlefield. Also the fact they are made of fur probably helped to keep the soldiers warm :)

@anbr90 Like the other 2 said it adds height to the soldiers which is a form of mental warfare, and after the battle of waterloo the British adopted the hats after beating the Old guard known at the time as the best fighteres in the World. So after beating them Britain decided to pass on the title to its own troops and its a sign of respect to the French.

The Scots Guards, who are trooping their colour in this video, are an armoured unit who had just returned from Afghanistan. If you're referring to Prince Phillip's medals, he served on active duty as an officer in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. You twat.

Yes I was in the military. Infantryman part of an Air Assault (helicopters) unit that was in Korea on DMZ and is now in Italy, (Vicenza) which is now part of the Airborne (paratroopers) brigade. They are traitors to me. And I dont like them. The unit got reflagged to Italy. The original unit is still in usa under a different flag/regiment. Yes I been to the frontline and was supposivly in the hottest area to be in, #1 hot spot on the planet according to TIME magazine. I dont care...
