@RantingTrent ... All cards support Havok. Examples: Dead Space 2, Red Faction guerilla, Half life 2, Fallout (3 and New Vegas) etc. It's the details that have been scaled down for a smooth performance.
I cant wait for the new amd fusions to come out gpu built on physical die of the cpu...thos eliminating the delay's caused by running your gpu through the pci bus or other mobo solutions...could drasticly increase the productivity of today's computers if they take their time and do it right..
This is superior to Physx. As a hobby 3d designer, I'm freaking impressed what GPUs can do today. There is almost no reason to render in raytracing because Directx can imitate shadows, lighting and reflections so well. Now we have only need a game or a PC that can show moving clothes and hair.
i just hope that havok and everything that uses it will have hardware support. i don't care which company wins in the end - i just want one of them to get popular and i want havok to work with PPUs
OpenCL is Standard with DX11 so any video card with Direct X 11 will come with OpenCL on it. so basicly while PhysX is stuck with Nvidia and Cuda other companies will make it so ther engines run on OpenCL and therefor run on both Nvidia and ATI cards.
we have no idea what AMD is doing. if we go by there roadmap it shows that they will have a revision out soon. they GTX480 is barley better than the 5870 so you can bet AMD is going to release something soon that will overpower the GTX480 easily.
@schafoO It doesn't matter if it uses OpenCL. It still runs physics tasks on hte GPU instead of the CPU and runs on multiple platforms including the PS3, 360, PC, Mac and Unix. The only downside is that NVidia have now limited it to NVidia GPUs meaning that programmers now have to use alternatives for consumers using Intel or AMD graphics cards.
hovok vs physx asinde ... if (by a stroke of luck ) games REALLY start usin havok insted of physx, does that mean its the end of struggling with wine ?? is it the and of enoing dual boot, viruses n blue screen errors or errors period ??is the chain that attaches us to windows going to finaly be thorn apart ?
I personally think that the physics computing world will become something like graphics is today. All you really have is DirectX, and while there is competition (OpenGL) it is very limited. It will be interesting what happens, but there is only so much you can do with physics programming APIs.
Finaly ATI did it! proprietary never works! Now all those ppl with physx can shut up because we can all share togreather in the awesomeness that is Havok (which is and will always be better than physx, go intel!)
The point with this technology, as far as I've understood, is that it is based on OpenCL, which is an open platform like OpenGL and not proprietary like PhysX, for example... Meaning that this can be integrated with every platform out there, CPUs and GPUs alike.
I think you are right. But Havok engine, prezented in this video is already impelemnetde in LOT of games, for example all source engine based games like HL2, CS:S etc. So when nvidia implemented PhysX in their drivers, that gave me nothing. I don't have any game using PhysyX. But i have alot of games running Havok engine. So for me it's very promising technology, because when their'll impelment this tech. in drivers, my games will run lot faster. This the point for me: more FPS in games xD
True, but the fact is that these games doesn't use that much of details in physics as that will take too much CPU power, OpenCL will offer much more performance to Havok here and this will allow game developers to add more details and more advanced effects.
this build of Havok isnt included though. Youd need to get the new SDK and recompile the engine to get this sort of GPU acceleration. It will effect new games not current ones
havok will thus be able to run on Nvidia and Ati gpu's.
and thus it will be adopted allot more then nvidia's physx, because with OpenCL havok allot more things are possible on more cards than nvidia's CUDA physx.
Many games has it already, but the level of details is not very much, the reason is the current use of Havok is still limited to CPU acceleration, later when it will be available in GPU acceleration using OpenCL developers will be able to add more physics details that will be enough to compete and even better than PhysX duo to the fact Havok is more mature in realism than PhysX, just search for PhysX cloth demo here in Youtube and compare it with this video.
Does this need a new kind of video cards or is it a software? I have a 5970, I don't suppose it supports OpenCL.
Is OpenCL in use by now? The video is already a little more than 2 years old.

oh come on guys.... who cares if it is physX or openCL
at least the game looks GREAT.... that's all you need
btw.... i thought it would be openGL???

So ATI Radeon cards do not support Havok right now correct? Any idea when they will?

Source engine (havok) gonna be the future of the games on fps, VALVe its awesome
Leckck 2 years ago
The source engine utilizes a heavily modified version of the havok physics engine to calculate physics. Check out Wikipedia.
The Havok Physics Engine is being provided by an autonomous Company (whose name I dont remember yet).

And NFS (from MW) uses Havok.
