They probably weren't actually magical; it was just believed by the people. Just like how the Aztecs believed that sacrifice was needed in order for the sun to come up each day. We of course know that's not true but it was one of their beliefs. Same goes for the Thugee and for most Hindu people today, it's just a belief.
