She actually says in one chapter that she used to go out with dark glasses on avoiding people's eyes. She was that paranoid and uncomfortable around others. If you'd grown up with 10 idiots a day shouting "Oi! Rickaaayy" at you and your family wouldn't you be a little wary around the general public?
