I vaguely remember watching this show, being only 6 or 7 at the time, in first grade I think. I must have watched Dark Shadows as well, which came on before it I think. The other show I remember from back then was 77 Sunset Strip.
The entire series was taped in color. But NBC disposed of their video masters when they cleaned out their Fort Lee, N.J. warehouse in 1973. The black and kinnies WERE saved...as well only three videotapes from season two (including this one).
Cool video with cameo contributions by Barry McGuire (Eve of Destruction) and Gary Lewis (This Diamond Ring). The fabulously talented Joanie Sommers singing another hit song penned by the legendary Tommy Boyce of Boyce & Hart fame.
@jityr2 I made a slight error, "Action" actually peaked at #13 by Cannon. My e-mail is set up at my library, and I don't have my music reference books in front of me there to double check. From now on I'll only post after checking my books. Excuse the error, heff.
Aww. she was and is so very pretty! Loved her voice. Had her 45 titled "Johnny Get Angry," which I inherited from my friend's big sister who didn't want the record anymore. I also recall Joanie singing the famous slogan line for Pepsi commercials: "For Those Who Thing Young!"
montmorg67 I am with you....... She was a talent beyond description. I have known her since New Year's Day 1961 and fell hopelessly in love.... I was 14 and she 19. I saw her in a Jazz club in Culver City 1993..... she was more beautiful and her voice was magnificent.... she rocked the house. An unbelievable audience from her generation to young teens..... all gave her cheers and standing ovations. Wish we had had digital video recorders that night.
Yep. It's Jerry Lewis, Barry McGuire, and Gary Lewis; and the guys at the end are the 4 members of Gary Lewis' Playboy Band. The song came out in Aug'65 by Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon, so it must be in the early Fall of '65.
@theheff66 This song was originally recorded by Paul Revere & The Raiders, but their version wasn't a hit. The Freddy Cannon version was the only hit version of this song. Joanie Sommers was the voice of "Clarice" in the animated holiday special "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", which premiered in December 1964, and has played almost every single Christmas season since.
@elc1960 Thanks for the info on "Action". Paul Revere's version would be an album cut, I tried to locate it on youtube, but it's not posted. That song would sound good by anyone back then. I looked up "Rudolph..." in my book "The Encyclopedia of Animated Cartoons"(1999), which list every cartoon ever made, and sorry to say, the voice of "Clarice" is listed as Janet Orenstein (an unknown), not Joanie Sommers. Either Joanie used an alias, or you heard wrong. The only known voice was Burl Ives.
@theheff66 One small point - Don Adams did the voice of the "Reindeer Games Coach" in that animated special. At that time, he was also the voice of "Tennessee Tuxedo", and I believe "Get Smart" had either just premiered or was about to premier. Thanks for the info on Janet Orenstein; after I posted my original comment, I borrowed my girlfriend's copy of the DVD and checked the credits. You were 100% correct. Thanks hef!
@elc1960 Yes, for years I thought the "Reindeer Games Coach's" voice was Don Adams too, but it's not. It must be the voice of Rudolph's dad slightly altered; both are not listed in my reference book, or the voice of Rudolph's mother. At this time Don Adams voiced "Tennessee" on "Tennessee Tuxedo & His Tales" which ran on Sat mornings on CBS from 1963-66. In my other book "The Complete Directory To Prime Time TV Shows 1946-1998", "Get Smart" ran Sat on NBC, 1965-69. Then Fri on CBS, 1969-70.
This is from "Hullabaloo , NOT WTAI.
