@hornman 1959 bro I Gota hip you to this truth when it comes to the creators of funk Clinton, bootsy and JGW are all cut from the same cloth I know you can, t be dissing Clinton and Bootsy come on bro P funk is true funk, the pretenders is these young busters today sampleling the true funk masters work and showing no love or respect paying no royalties. Now that's a dirty shame! Peace true funk soldier
THE ORIGINAL PIMP DADDY FUNKMASTER...BEFORE BOOTSY, CLINTON AND ALL THE PRETENDERS SHOWED UP. ALWAYS HAD GREAT SESSION PLAYERS WITH HIM TOO. WHAT A PRO...GOD I MISS THE 1970'S
I was converted some twenty years ago to the watsonian institute !! ( all who know what that means) problem is !!!!! not got all the vynil anymore ,and miss his stuff !! like !!( what the helll is this )
there are no words in earthly languages I can muster to express with accuracy the breadth and ultimate soulfulness, peace and happiness JGW has made upon old me, and I am certain so many others. Thanks for sharing this one! You gotta get some of his stuff on vinyl... you will have a religious experience fo sho :)
i'm sure it's technically possible that in the the grand scale of human civilisation there may have once been a cooler individual that Johnny Guitar Watson, but somehow i doubt it.
JGW didtnt have to outplay you cause everybody knew that he was the "bridge" he could walk in on your style and be good at it cause he came from the source of things that are good music.
i love his interpretation, It sent me on a funky/blues/jazz mind blowing trip. Even the handful of viewers that didnt like this was there jamming their heads.
jazzy blues players or bluesy jazz players like Johnny Guitar Watson and Grant Green, there just weren't enough of them. These days it's all about playing without being part of the ensemble, we need government-funded horn sections just to get the ball rolling again.
@ Everyone: Lol I did not even post the comments under this song! I think an elder relative of mine did so while I was logged in under my account and away from the computer I dont think they knew that I was logged in either soooooooo I apologize for any offenses taken from comments posted under my account lol
@espanola82 Thank you very much for that statement the great Muddy Waters said it best the blues had a baby and they named it rock and roll everything that came after was just a carbon copy
@ igessthsisgrwnup same here. Man i grew up listening to all this back in the day. They can never get over the race card. What else to they have. @espanola82 whats wrong with JM?
@espanola82 as a white dude who loves this music soo hard......everyone who watches this, educate your friends on the inspirationals, the geniuses who hovered just below the surface of mainstream, just because they were too good for people to get. thats one bad mother right there
for years, ive had fellow music heads namedrop this dude, and ive been meaning to check him out. I have to say, johnny guitar watson is the real deal. much props and respect. rip.
@qwerly45 He had but it had never been mentioned or he might had been too ashamed to admit it, i would have been honored to mention about "guitar" influencing me!
@espanola82 The problem is the way the radio stations control what is played. Anyone willing to can find great music if they just listen and search it out. Check out 88.5 FM in the US on Friday nights at 9pm. The Doug Curry show for classic blues with loads of history. WRUR in Rochester, NY Great stuff. And trust me as a white person, there are just as many blacks that don't know the great music either. Keep educating everyone....
i saw him live in the early 80s. "Oh my god. Look at all the ladies", "Gimme that guitar", "Let me tell you this". Great guitar player, unique sound and a good sense of humour. I wish today's so called R&B would have a little bit more of this.
As a white southerner, I'd just like to say I know real blues. And its not with Stevie Ray and Clapton. Both interesting acts in their own way, but certainly not with the raw, funky energy and soul seen here.
does any one know what kind of filter effect he uses on his guitar, its the shizzzz, sounds the same as what eric gale uses, i must have one...haha thanks
Thanks a million Bob. You did well and you are a Man of Good. Thats a wonderful upbeat version. I had the full vhs of this gig in Bremen and could never put my hands again on the youtube version of the openning tune : headhunters' Chameleon - Johnny rocks it again. Do you have it ?
My Dad played Johnny all the time when I was a kid. My father had all his 8-tracks in his van back in the day. we had to listen to the whole album. Johnny was the shit!
Location: Houston, TX. Time: 5:05am. This is the reason why I love the internet. I'm 26 and have been listening to Guitar Watson for several years, educating myself on blues, soul, funk. This man is a genius and I wish more of his music was featured, his early recordings, that is. Then you'll see exactly where Jimmie Vaughan got his kicks. Love you, Watson. See you in space!
THE GANGSTA puttin' his spin on Mr. Magic! Man...I don't what to do with myself. Artists don't DO stuff like this anymore! As much as I love Eric Gale, I love Johnny too...and Johnny didn't need no pick!
Johnny Rules! Did you know he is buried at forest lawn near burbank, I drive by him everyday going to work! I think about him everytime I drive by there. Hail the Prophet Johnny! Johnny Lives forever!
Albert Collins did the same and he sounded just as great. JG Watson was an innovator! This guy wrote the book on 'dirty" guitar (together with Guitar Slim) One of the first guys to use feedback and distortion some 15 yrs before Hendrix.
Yo, Mr. Watson can play anything and any song he wants to. Everything is tight and exact to Mr. Grover Washington's version of Mister Magic! Nice-n-funky!
