@xxlzaka Just because they are guards is not really a valid reason to respect them. Respecting them as people is a different thing. You can train a dog to guard, or use surveillance.
I wonder why nobody happened to question a sentry box in the middle of the street, not near any Royal residence and with an unarmed and poorly turned out guard, I'm glad this useless show was cancelled
Jesus christ, I'm fed up of Americans commenting on this video saying 'Oh, is this British humour', 'wow, British humour sucks', ' i don't get British humour'. THIS IS NOT BRITISH HUMOUR. American people don't understand proper British humour because it isn't obvious like American 'humour' is. American people only find things funny if it is in your face and they don't understand dry, 'British humour'.
@rengiil777 This isn't British humour. British humour is famous purely because of its sophistication. The only laugh I got out of this was because I was trying to imagine what kind of cretin would genuinely find this entertaining!
@Murderdogs Granted that I do not usually watch too much British comedy, but whenever I do. It's not funny to me at all. I mean, not in the least bit humouring whatsoever.
Marines : Dress blues or whites. Air force: Service dress. Father is a retired LT. Col in the Marine Corps. I was in the AF reserves. Definitely a difference between the uniform names.
@Fillydawg1 A plume? You mean that lighter colored object in that tall black hat? Enlighten me my friend, what is the significance of that if you know? Both the plume and the bearskin? I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find an answer for it. I am quite intriged by the whole uniform, but all I can find about it is pretty much rubbish.
@JaniceGhostHunter13 Anyway, this "guardsman" obviously a fake cuz he's wearing white gloves, wearing black shoes instead of black ammo boots, wearing his bayonet frog in the wrong place instead of left rear, curb/chin chain goes under the lip and not the chin, bearskin cap supposed to be worn more forward & hair covering the eyes, and where's his rifle?? lol.
@Fillydawg1 Thats insightful. Now that you've told me all that, I realize how complex the uniform really is. Its really something to admire! But is there a particular reason the Royal Guards are ment to dress as such? In other words, what is the meaning behind wearing a bearskin and placing a plume on it?
@JaniceGhostHunter13 Ok....this uniform is of the "Grenadier guards" who wear a vertical white horsehair plume on the left of the bearskin cap. This one is falling down/out cuz it's not been secured properly by the little white wire hook at the top, which hooks to a little sewn in ring towards the top of the hat.
@JaniceGhostHunter13 Significance of the bearskin cap in battle was it made the soldiers look taller/bigger and more menacing looking to the enemy across the battlefield. History is in 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo the British "1st Regiment of Footguards" defeated Napoleaon's "grenadiers" so the British footguards took the hat as a battle prize. Removed all the tassles, badges and such. Later they were re-named the "Grenadier Guards".
@JaniceGhostHunter13 Reason for the plume was to identify the Grenadiers by officers/generals from a distance on the battlefield. Grenadiers were usually on the right flank so their plume went on the left. Other guards regiments have their plumes too which are placed on whatever side of the bearskin cap usually opposite their position in the line for better identification for the officers/generals.
@JaniceGhostHunter13 Reason for the curb/chin chain and why usually worn under the lower lip is it was a protection from a sword slash to the face in battle. The rings are sewn onto a black piece of leather, etc.
@Fillydawg1 Dang! Now THAT is a uniform with some meaning! Some people debate it looks silly, but man, if you had one of those finely trained soldiers after with that bearskin and plume, you'd go running! I think its an awesome uniform, much better than many of ours thats for sure. Thank you so much for telling me just how awesome that uniform is. And may I ask, were you ever a Royal Guardsman, or are just as inspired with it as I?
@JaniceGhostHunter13 Actually, I've done it here in SoCal but unfortunately the Brits "Jim'll fix it" show couldn't fix it for me, haha. I had the little group here in SoCal going back to the mid 1980's and did two royal events here. The uniform of course now is "ceremonial" much like our USMC dress blues, etc. Also on another funny note, one of the shots he's wearing his bearskin cap backwards, LOL.
@Fillydawg1 LoL! Thats pretty neat! When I was in the Air Force I always wanted to have a uniform that didnt make me look like a flight attendant. Loved them still, but I like uniforms that have alot of meaning into them. Ours do too, but I guess I like to see diffirent cultures things too. I didnt even notice the backwards bit! LoL. Thank you ever so much again for being so polite and informative.
@JaniceGhostHunter13 You can also see that it's backwards cuz the plume ended up on the right and the "point" is on the front. They groom and cut these hats to have a kind of "DA" at the back with a point on the bottom. I often wonder how some US Marines would feel if someone from another country put their dress blues on weirdly and did a bit like this?
@whatitischief I know, LOL. I happen to have my "jarhead" stepdads set. He was a WWII vet and took Okinawa by himself, haha. His "dress blues" are about 1965 or so vintage, etc.
@JaniceGhostHunter13 Also the real guys in London ARE real soldiers and when they're not doing ceremonial duties there, they're in other places around the world getting shot at. They're not merely high school kids hired to be tourist attractions. I have much admiration and respect for them, which is also why I did the re-enactment outfit.
@Fillydawg1 Oh yes, I know. When I was deployed I had the pleasure of meeting a few. I'm not sure if they were the "Queen's Guards" or anything like that, but they were a fantastic group of fellows. They are something to be respected and admired.
