Um, I'm sick of this BLACK ONLY mentality.. I performed this with a cast outside of America.. A country with no african americans or mexicans or american indians.. >_>' And it was still amazing.. <3
@InASenseGuilty Lol thank you. And it's not because of race, it's because black people possess soul and spirit into our work which is something white people may not understand.
Why is her dress so short? Why does the lion/teddy bear looking thing's tail point to the ground? Where is the funk? Who choreographed this? Who is the costume designer? Shame, shame!
Why is her dress so short? Why does the lion/teddy bear looking thing's tail point to the ground? Where is the funk? Who choreographed this? Who what the costume designer? Shame, shame!
im disappointed, they could have kept the Emerald city Funky, like the The Wiz did.
Its not about race, cause white ppl can be just as funky as blacks. White people can do the Wiz,. but u cant give everything a Caucasian overload. Keep it funky.
@XrisSmiles, Agreed, race does not determine level of funkiness. Funk/Soul is a manifestation of culture (exposure). Interestingly, the music that was used here is from the score of the original broadway production. Where many performances of this musical erroneously use the music from the movie soundtrack, I think it appropriate to use this version in any performance of the musical. Sounded pretty good IMHO.
ILMBAO! This is like making singing in the rain an all black cast! but then again. we have taken some stuff and the re makes are ten times better than the original... duhh. THE WIZ>> ..... the wizard of oz.............hmmm!
Even the musical this was meant for primarily Black audiences, it can be pulled off by Mexicans/Asians/Indians/Native Americans if there is enough *SOUL* in the singing. But yes, an all-White cast for this is ridiculous. Even just a few ethnic cast members thrown in would have made this much more realistic to the movie.
@JumpStreet1983..well, it was just another rendition of a classic, just like the song "For Once In My Life" was done by variious artists, but didn't become real big until Stevie Wonder did his rendition. It was for any audience that wanted to enjoy this experience. putting blacks in it won't necessarily make it better. It'll appear a little ethnic on purpose, but won't help. Watch the movie "True Romance" and Gary Oldham is an example of a smooth white dude. Juss Sayin'.
The race of the cast doesn't matter. Whether the cast is Black, Asian, White, Mexican, etc., the original music should have been used. No excuses. This is just a poorly-executed local theater version of the movie. I wouldn't even pay $6 to see this junk if they have no intention of staying true to the movie.
@JumpStreet1983 Yeah but you dont find it strange that a production that was meant primarily for African-Americans doesnt have one black cast member? (In this scene anyways)
Okay this isn't like the movie The Wiz it is just amateur theater, so if there are no African Americans it doesn't matter. But, I do kind of agree the the music arrangements were pretty messed up. I mean if you are going to do a play like The Wiz you have to use the original music... it just makes the show better.
yeah no..this isn't the Wiz..this must be the Wizard of Oz....becauseThe Wiz has an african american cast..NOT a white cast..wtf? the music arrangement doesn't even sound close to that of the Wiz..and if you all actually wanna call this THE WIZ, Quincy Jones would be very upset to see his work turned into this..im just sayin..
@bw06511 This is based on the Broadway version of 'The Wiz', which is longer, and has a lot of different elements and music than the movie version; thus the Emerald City scene is different and they don't change to red and gold...
If there are no people of ethnic minority in the theatre school, then they would have to make do with who they have.

@JumpStreet1983 Come on people...generally any one, given experience, can be funky. This is simply a racist perspective.

True to the movie? lol What about true to the play?
From this clip it looks like they combined the traditional Wizard of Oz look set by the film with the script for The Wiz.
Nice Emerald City promenade by the way. :)
