He should have arisen right in front of the seal. By coming up to one side, the seal bolted to the other side. And once in the water, there was no chance for the polar bear to catch the seal (seals can swim much faster). Polar bears almost always catch seals at the interface between ice and water - they very rarely catch seals in the open water.

When you go from behind, it's easy to run away since it's easy to run in a straight line, but attacking from the side makes them stumble because the natural inclination is to move away, but moving to the side is much harder than moving forward or backward.
