The function of government is to gain power.

Ideally the government would use its power to improve the lives of its citizens.

Corruption and greed, can divert government from any ideal path. American government is designed with the intent of counteracting corruption and greed. To limit the power of government so that the people hold the power. However you feel you must admit that America's founding fathers did something right.

Just leaves the question of whether or not things are still right.

I completely disagree with everything you just said. The same corporations and business owners are going to be in power with or without trade restrictions. By allowing eliminating tarrifs you allow these business owners to take advantage of countries with lower standards of living and looser environmental restrictions. It makes holding a job more competitive for the working class, which leads to lower standards of living around the world.

No one is "taking advantage" of anyway. Trade is mutually beneficial. Trade and the western industrialization of china has brought millions of chinese out of poverty, INCREASING the standards of living there, in direct contradiction to your arguments. It becomes harder to hold an unskilled job in the already developed countries, which is natural, because it is less efficient to produce at the higher labor costs.

Millions of Chinese out of poverty , and Millions more into poverty. In this ''globalized economy'' wealth is aggregated to Multinational Corporations. Present trade agreements are meant to drive cost, for corporations, down with cheaper labor, and expand their monopolies (Since smaller companies don't have the capability to operate globally), outsourcing American jobs elsewhere. It doesn't benefit us nor does it benefit the world.

You are wrong. The heavy handed use of weapons and fear by the police was completely uncalled for and went beyond the scope of protecting citizens. Innocent people were hurt by police for just being downtown. Our tax dollars were misspent to give the police "storm trooper" outfits and they even had a tank! A tank to protect the citizens during a peaceful union march.
