Who cares about realism? Realism only makes games needlessly complicated. Many "real" games require you to have as much experience and knowledge as a coach in order to enjoy the gameplay. What fun is there in that?

@eehhkk12, why? I hope you don't think newer automatically means better. Many newer games have ridiculous learning curves with no pick-up-and-play interface, a huge disadvantage.

I don't even care when a game was released. Good, fun games transcend time, regardless of era.

NBA Jam is and always will be the best basketball game ever. I mostly agree with everything on this list. (I prefer Wii Sports and don't know about MS Golf)

Besides, what are "good" graphics anyway? And since when has it been fair to judge graphics based entirely on today's standards? Games made 15 years ago didn't have access to the resources and technology that has been developed since then, so there's no way they'll look as richly animated or photo-realistic.

Honestly, I don't even care that they're "old" games. I really don't understand some people's obsession with when a game was released. When I play sports games, I really only care about one thing: how fun are they? Ultimately, that's how I came up with my decisions for this video.

Graphics? Doesn't matter. Realism? Who cares? If it's fun to play, it transcends time.

i agree with all the sports except baseball (my opinion, it should have been ken griffey jr. baseball for the SNES, i thought triple play sucked, MVP was a lot better) and american football, which i think should have been troy aikman football for the SNES but i'm pretty sure i'm the only person alive that played that game so i'll forgive you for that one lol. besides that, good list

Mario Tennis does have blindingly furious competition with Virtua Tennis. I know. I am a DC nerd.

Also, I found the Tecmo Bowl series to be constantly tedious and glitchy. Like I said before, I am a DC nerd, so I think I know what I'm saying when I say "Down with Tecmo Bowl! Up with NFL 2K!

I agree about Microsoft Golf. The the old saying 'keep it simple, stupid' really applies here. Back when early versions MS Golf was made for the old 486 computers, my brother and I played numerous competitions.

When other stuff came along, eg. Tiger Woods, it was hard to get anyone to play it with me, because it frustrated guests to develop enough skill to play a fun and competitive game.

MS Golf was relatively easy for guests to catch on to and want to play every time they visited.

What about the pong knockoffs like TV Tennis and Winner. Or the variations on the game Video Olympics for the Atari 2600. Pong not only was so popular that it appeared in the MK3 arcade machine but it spawned Pong: The Next Generation on PS1. Or the fact that people are STILL making pong flashgames on Kongregate and Newgrounds.Pong was also the original competitive videogame. So any remarks?

How do you define "better"? For me, it's the ability to just pick up and play without overly complicated controls and features that require you to be an expert on the sport. Graphics? Meaningless.

One thing I like about older sports games is that they don't try to get too technical. Some of the newer ones have all these features that seem to require that you've had coaching experience in these sports while not taking care of some basic problems such as controls and AI.

No I didn't. I specifically didn't include them for the following reasons:

- NASCAR games are racing games, which are generally categorized differently from sports.

- WWE-style wrestling is considered entertainment in real life, not sports (since it's fake), so it was disqualified.

- Boxing doesn't really have that many games to choose from. There's the punch-out series and that's pretty much it, so there's no point.

I believe tecmo bowl is way more fun than madden. Madden's unrealistic movement and a complete absent of physics for next gen game really takes away from it. Plus the only things that madden changed since like 2000 were eyecandy. Tecmo bowl is the best ever :) I still play it every once in awhile.
