@XmagnaX OH i know he's not near Saku's status yet. I'm just saying he's starting to emerge as a great Japanese fighter who has the ability to finish fights. He's been very impressive lately and hasn't lost a fought since he starting training at Sakuraba's school.
i just stumbled upon videos of sakuraba vs royce and have loved his fights so far! can anyone tell me the fight where he bows to the opponent at 2:48 , it made me tear, cuz even though they're fighting each other it reminds me that he still has respect and isnt an asshole. also i like how he has this cheeky smile/move like running around in circles
@shangss this his fight with Carlos Newton the former UFC welterweight champion. That match is still considered to this day the greatest grappling match in MMA history. two of the very best right there. course that could be said for most of Saku's fights.
@shangss he was a pro wrestler. so sometimes he'd come to the ring wearing masks n such to pay tribute to other wrestlers or just dressed in funny costumes to have fun with the crowd. for his fight with Kevin Randleman they called Kevin the "real life donkey kong" so Saku came out in a super mario hat and mustach.

@09TexasTitan no i'm talking about the Igor fight. i've seen it atleast 20 times, have it on DVD. for the first 10 minutes of the fight Saku had Igor on the ground and was attacking with punches and a couple submissions. Igor took over in the last 5 mins of the fight when Saku was exhausted. He did land some great punches and a nice lil suplex in that time. The bell rang. the judges rendered a Draw, so they'd have to go to overtime because it was a tourny. Saku's corner then threw the towel
@09TexasTitan it was a draw in regulation after Saku had fought Royce for an hour and a half earlier that night. Igor had beaten Gary Goodrich in an 8 minute fight that had a 5 min break in it to replace Gary's broken cup and that fight took place before Saku vs Royce that night. IT was Saku's first loss because he was too exhausted to go into an overtime round, but it wasn't like he did horribly. He dominated the first half of it and Igor Dominated the 2nd half. not bad when fighting the no1 HW
@KnowImillian Rickson shouldn't have backed out of both of his chances to fight Saku. He never fought anyone of substance in MMA so i wouldn't call him a beast, unless you just mean in BJJ/GJJ tourneys.
He seemed content running his mouth off while men like Sakuraba just fought the best and didn't worry about talking trash.
What a great and entertaining fighter! Back in the early Pride Championship days, it seemed to me that most of the Japanese fighters were more or less a punching bag for their oppenents. Not Saku! You had to bring your "A" game stepping into the ring with this dude. Some devasting losses, for sure, but awesome wins too - The Gracies, Belfort, Q. Jackson, Ken Shamrock, Randleman...
That's quite likely but regardless of the outcome you KNOW both guys would have given it everything they had. It would have been a fantastic fight. It really is a tragedy that it never happened. Guys like Sakuraba and Rickson are those rare fighters who come along once in a decade, kinda like Fedor.
The guy fought 90 minutes against royce gracie, and then had to fight the most deadly striker in the GP in one night. This guy is the toughest fighter in the history of MMA, and its insane that a 170-ish fighter could hang with top hw & lhw's.

@1381bloccmonsta LOL open your fake "I speak Japanese" eyes. If you don't see the absolute reverence and respect the whole Pride org had for Fedor you're just trippin'. Wand, Nog, those guys too. I guess they're all just untold stories, swept under the rug.
We need to educate some of the new UFC fanboys about the REAL UFC fighters, not just these toughguys who are all muscles and tattoos with no technique.
@panther2552 yes but at this time gracie has gone through some serious wars man he was already a legend , and every one wanted to fight him by this time everybody knew pretty much was gracie was going to do so they were ready for him and i still say gracie seemed really slow nothing and i say nothing like ufc years
@ukhouseRJ We'll have to agree to disagree then bro. Saku had already been through a few wars himself against much tougher competition than Royce had faced by that point. The difference maker in Royce and Saku's fight was that Saku was a complete fighter whereas Royce only had his GJJ
most entertaining fighter of all time for sure, he was the reason why i switched to pride from ufc, i know he was at ufc japan and got hard done by big john but luckily tank abbott couldnt continue and saku took his place and went on to win the tournement, you legend saku thanks for the memories.
@tyran1023 and? 41 years old and been in more wars than any fighter in history against a 28 year old in his fighting prime. Jason showed great respect to Sakuraba before and after the fight, Saku being his hero and all. it's too bad you couldn't learn from his example, then again it looks like you just popped in here to get a rise out of folks. pretty sad.
@panther2552 one more thing man like this footage saku could not beat this guy and even got sumbitted, but gracie beat him on ufc , and also saku lost in ufc japan and gracie won the first 4 jajajajaja so no comparisin by this point but still check out this foootage Sakuraba vs Kimo
@ukhouseRJ i've seen the Kimo fight, by most folks account it's a work "pro wrestling match", Both UFC and Pride count his first match with silvera as his first MMA fight. As for Saku losing in UFC Japan, check the record books. the first fight was called a no contest because of Big John's mistakenly thinking Saku was out when he was shooting for a Single leg. Saku fought Conan Silvera again in the finals that night, armbaring him to finish as the UFC ultimate Japan Champion.
@tyran1023 you idiot do you know how old he is? And the fact that he keeps on fighting shows how much of a warrior he is even though he's been in more wars than anyone else. You're just some dumb fan who thinks he knows everything by just reading the results.
seeing him lose to mayhem just makes me cry man he was the greatest ever but it is time to hang it up thank you kazushi skauraba for inspireing me to love mma
lol, i been checkin out the Saku highlights today and noticed quite a bit of new folks quoting the "Ultimate Gracie" show that was on Spike lastnight. Glad the lil snippet where they mentioned Saku's victory is giving him a lil more recognition with newer fans.
sakuraba is the very definition of 'kick ass'. he forced royce to quit cause of his leg kicks. he tore his shin apart. royces corner threw in the towel. longest fight ever...90 mins. back then time was not a factor. can u imagine 30 min rounds with no gloves? true warriors we need more artists like gracie and sakuraba. props to newton by bowing to sakuraba even tho he lost. it was an art back then. now we just have a bunch of brawlers.
@lordsangone they were 15 minute rounds actually and time limits were a factor, but Royce got to make all the rules for their fight and he wanted no time limit with no restarts (saved him from the kimura in the first).
What's most amazing is Saku continued in the tourny when everyone thought he'd bow out and fought another 20 mins with Igor the top heavyweight in the world who outweighed Saku by 50 lbs. It went to a draw, before Saku's corner threw the towell before overtime
What is incredible is this man fought everyone, i.e. Cro Cop in his PRIME, and he walks around day to day at 175lbs. He could have cut down to 155 if he really wanted to. Think about that, he fought heavyweights and gave them a run for their money.. Its for this reason I honestly believe that he is probably the greatest MMA fighters of all time. Yes Fedor is great, but he never fought such varied opponents as Saku. On that note, time to go watch Saku vs. Newton.
@jrguru i totally agree. It's funny for me his most defining moment is something most folks tend to overlook. The greatest moment in his career for me was when he fought Igor Vovchancyan (best heavyweight in the world and 50 lbs heavier). Saku went to a draw in regulation before his corner threw in the towel so he didn't have to go to OT. He did this after fighting Royce for 90 mins the same night and noone thought Saku would continue in the tourny.
@jrguru NO DOUBT,SAKU IS THE GREATEST,EPIC WINS AND EPIC LOSES BUT NEVER TURN DOWN ANYONE....WE NEED MORE FIGHTERS LIKE HIM,EVEN NOW WHEN HIS BODY IS BROKEN FOR THE WARS THAT HE S BEEN INTO HE STILL WANNA FIGHT THE BEST..........IN SAKURABA WE TRUST,WAR SAKU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@jrguru Agreed! People who say Sakuraba was overrated must have no knowledge of the history of MMA. He was first man to beat a Gracie in like 47 years, including Royce who basically built the sport of MMA as we know it today. Everyone he fought in his Prime were the best in the world at that time n most of them out weighed him by at least 30 pounds. He is one of the true legends of this sport.
What's a real shame is that the Sakuraba vs Rickson Gracie fight never happened. Those guys would have been a perfect match for each other and if it had occurred after the Renzo fight both men would have come into it undefeated. It's perhaps the greatest fight to never happen.
For anyone who hasn't seen the entire 90 minute Sakuraba vs Royce Gracie fight from Pride GP 2001, check it out. There are only a few MMA fights that are true classics and this is very much one of them.
What Sakuraba lacked in skill(some people would say, not me) he made up for in heart and showmanship. He would MAKE fights, regardless of winning or losing. That's why he'll always have a place in MMA history, and keep all the respect he's earned.
@MrJack12483 he's 40 years old now and contracted with Dream so not likely that he'll return to the UFC. he was one of the last UFC touranament champions winning UFC Ultimate Japan 1 by armbarring Marcos Silvera (32-1) a prized Gracie Student
SAKU was da man! He always came out and gave us a show. Win or loss he wouldn't diasspoint audiences. Thanks SAKU for always putting on a show! You made it very entertaining!
@lassek85 i don't think it was that at all atleast in the first two matches he was outsized and muscled by Wandy. 30lbs is a big difference when it's two elite fighters. gotta wonder if Wandy is able to get up from being dropped if not for the size advantage in the first fight. or if he could slam his way out of the choke in the second if Saku wasn't so much lighter (remember Saku controled the second fight, till the collarbone break)
@v10moped when you look at his record you have to take into major consideration he's 185lbs fighting men 205-260lbs. and of course these men are just big they're elite big men like WAndy, Vitor, Cro Cop,, Nog, Igor Vovchancyan (was an actual draw but Saku'scorner threw in the towel so Saku wouldn't have to fight overtime, he had already fought Royce Gracie for 90 minutes that same night.)
Only fighter I've ever seen think outside the basic mma moves and tryout attacks never even thought of. An innovator that the mma may never see again. UFC is great and all but damn I miss Pride fights lol yellow cards ftw!
@mc4words LOL! i actually don't like gsp i want him dethroned, and i'm sorry would you prefer if i call you a queer or something more adept to your demographic. LEMIWINKS FTW!
this conversation is not really relevant it belongs to the ali vs tyson class of the 80s. sakuraba is what every little boy wants to grow up to be, even if his mother wants him to be a girl, haha
he still fights for Dream. he fought 2 fights last september one aganist a boxer named rubin williams, the second against little Cro Cop Zelg Galesic, tapping williams with a kimura and Galesic with kneebar. the Galesic fight was pretty amazing. up for fight of the year.
@HuntingMemoriesTV If you're referring to this song, it's actually by Five for Fighting. But now that you mention James Blunt, they do sound eerily alike...
This is the best kazushi sakuraba hl video on youtube! Such a versatile fighter; strikes, grappling, submissions. He dominated many of his bouts and most of his losses were against top-class competition such as Wanderlei Silva and Kimo Leopoldo who were twice his size!
Nice video dude. Awesome tribute. Way better than the others

Newton.

@jrguru man, good conclusion. bravo
juicespirit 1 year ago
@jrguru i totally agree. It's funny for me his most defining moment is something most folks tend to overlook. The greatest moment in his career for me was when he fought Igor Vovchancyan (best heavyweight in the world and 50 lbs heavier). Saku went to a draw in regulation before his corner threw in the towel so he didn't have to go to OT. He did this after fighting Royce for 90 mins the same night and noone thought Saku would continue in the tourny.
panther2552 1 year ago
@jrguru NO DOUBT,SAKU IS THE GREATEST,EPIC WINS AND EPIC LOSES BUT NEVER TURN DOWN ANYONE....WE NEED MORE FIGHTERS LIKE HIM,EVEN NOW WHEN HIS BODY IS BROKEN FOR THE WARS THAT HE S BEEN INTO HE STILL WANNA FIGHT THE BEST..........IN SAKURABA WE TRUST,WAR SAKU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Calfullanas 1 year ago
@jrguru Agreed! People who say Sakuraba was overrated must have no knowledge of the history of MMA. He was first man to beat a Gracie in like 47 years, including Royce who basically built the sport of MMA as we know it today. Everyone he fought in his Prime were the best in the world at that time n most of them out weighed him by at least 30 pounds. He is one of the true legends of this sport.
Katsuya89 1 year ago
@jrguru hell yeah, i def agree bro,
i was sad to see him get destroyed by Arona, Wanderlei 2x,
but hell, he's so awesome.
showmanship, awesome techniques, creativity,
very humble.

That's why he'll always have a place in MMA history, and keep all the respect he's earned.

any chance this guy will ever join UFC?
MrJack12483 1 year ago
@MrJack12483 he's 40 years old now and contracted with Dream so not likely that he'll return to the UFC. he was one of the last UFC touranament champions winning UFC Ultimate Japan 1 by armbarring Marcos Silvera (32-1) a prized Gracie Student

@Kleberkiwi
He underestimated Wanderlei imo, as simple as that - once he realised it was a proper threat it was too late.
lassek85 1 year ago
@lassek85 i don't think it was that at all atleast in the first two matches he was outsized and muscled by Wandy. 30lbs is a big difference when it's two elite fighters. gotta wonder if Wandy is able to get up from being dropped if not for the size advantage in the first fight. or if he could slam his way out of the choke in the second if Saku wasn't so much lighter (remember Saku controled the second fight, till the collarbone break)

v10moped 1 year ago
@v10moped when you look at his record you have to take into major consideration he's 185lbs fighting men 205-260lbs. and of course these men are just big they're elite big men like WAndy, Vitor, Cro Cop,, Nog, Igor Vovchancyan (was an actual draw but Saku'scorner threw in the towel so Saku wouldn't have to fight overtime, he had already fought Royce Gracie for 90 minutes that same night.)
panther2552 1 year ago
@panther2552 Thanks for the correction. Well said. In that case hes even more amazing.

This is the best kazushi sakuraba hl video on youtube! Such a versatile fighter; strikes, grappling, submissions. He dominated many of his bouts and most of his losses were against top-class competition such as Wanderlei Silva and Kimo Leopoldo who were twice his size!
