  • hallelujah for all people in the world !!!

    alby

  • It's like karaoke with him, you can sing along with him it's fun

  • he is truley brillient..but damn, he looks like Herman Monster!

  • people love this song in my country

  • all i can say is WOW.This song filled my soul and my heart. It brought me to tears.

  • I would love to smoke weed with Moses. I would smoke weed with anyone if I could sing 7 minutes like this ever in my life.

  • I'm not a very religious man but, even though there's no proof god exists, even with all this technology that let's us split the atom and create black holes, we still can't prove he does NOT exist.

    Good song.

  • I love it when people use this in connection with Christian faith b/c:

    1. he's Jewish

    2. it speaks of real faith in the universe that spans beyond any religion

    3. its references david's adultery with the woman on the roof

  • Proud to say Leonard is Canadian :)

  • SIR LEONARD COHEN. No body can sing like YOU. YOUR voice is one and only. You are the ONE AND ONLY. GOD BLESS YOU. FOREVER.

  • My favorite song....I just did a cover it. I put all my heart and soul into it...so it would be awesome if you guys checked it out. please?? :)

  • All his versions of this (his) song sound like stripper/cheasy porno music....

  • I always thought the reference to binding and hair-cutting was about Samson and Delilah - tying someone to a kitchen chair is kind of like domesticating them, and hair cutting is the way Samson's strength was taken from him.

  • chi sono i 25 mentecatti a cui non piace

  • He is amazing.

  • Legend!!! pure and simple!!

  • Bat Sheva did not tie David. Just the opposite

    2. Broken and cold cannot characterize true Halleluyah.

Neverthe less, your music is celestial.

  • @batchava You do realize that this song is about the end of a love affair, right?

  • @PlayaSinNombre

Even so. one cannot use the story of David and Bat Sheva in this connection. For this reason, sometimes Leonnard Cohen skip over the b iblical overture of this song.

  • @batchava Why doesn't the stoyy of Samson & Bathsheva connect to this song. It is about the loss of faith. & the betrayal of a lover is one of the most profound losses of faith man can experience outside of a church.

  • @PlayaSinNombre

But how one can connect the story of David and Bat Sheva to it?

  • @batchava The David & Bathsheba s from an earlier line in the verse..." I saw her bathing on the roof..."

  • This is a truly amazing song. And he sings it with such passion because he really feels what he's talking about unlike the new pop versions I've been hearing.

  • my thoughts are not electric anymore...... hard luck science....the end of the atomic family

  • my thoughts are not electric anymore...... hard luck science

  • truly wonderful

  • My choir teacher started playing this and every one rushed to his piano and saturated singing along

  • Woderfull !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank You,gggvlg Bea

  • just awesome

  • damn i cant get my eyes off that blonde over there *-*

  • You are surprisingly close there. Cohen's family can trace their family line to Aaron, Moses' brother.

  • Cohen sings this song like he's a 2,000 year old Rabbi who smoked weed with Moses. C'mon, no one can compete with that. He sounds like he's praying. And like he actually understands the words that he speaks. Unlike most people who do beautiful renditions of this song and others of his. It's just not the same.

  • @izaacmusic1 There are a lot of interpretations of the context, but take a closer look: many phrases describe the troubles he had with his wife, by whom he felt hurt .. you know, "his faith was strong" anyway, but he was overwhelmed by her. She broke his throne, cut his hair (the lions hair, you see) ... and the "broken" hallelujah is the praise he can't give unto god as he has been hurt by his wife and life itself.

  • @Popom4nn I agree with you. I think the cutting of the hair also references Samson and Delilah and the whole experience of completely giving up all of your power and control to a woman. And the 'broken" hallelujah is his broken love as well, and how hard it is to love again when someone has hurt you. I think the points that you make only further emphasize my point which is that being such a deeply personal song, it comes accross with more power when he sings it than any of covers.

  • @izaacmusic1

Yeah, nobody can sing it like him. It's his song, and you feel it. He's the most fantastic singer|poet ever. I love him!

  • @MichaGusify Yeah I love him too. For me Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed are the greatest singer/poets of all time.

  • @izaacmusic1 I laughed at your comment but do you realize that Leonard Cohen wrote this song - he knows very well what the words mean. It's HIS.

  • @izaacmusic1 The voice. Simple. Heartbreaking and eternally catching. Not Jewish so I don't know if this song has a religious significance. I just know this guy makes it sound incredible.

  • @izaacmusic1 Yup, no proof of a god to exist yet. That being said, it is beautiful.

  • @izaacmusic1 except the song is about his fading sex life and achieving orgasm, its nothing to do with religion!

  • @greenbluekites06 Everybody keeps coming at me with the same response about how the song has nothing to do with religion. I never said the song had anything to do with religion. My whole point is that he uses a language and tone of biblical proportions in this and many other of his songs. It's like one of his trademarks. And that's why it sounds so ridiculous to me when people cover him because they sound like children and he sounds like god.

  • @izaacmusic1

thanks for taking the time to explain your view! everybody interpretations of music are different! i do agree that some artists are simply to unique to cover properly! and that cohen is one of them

  • @izaacmusic1

    I agree

  • @izaacmusic1 I understand, what you are saying. And agree, his song is without ego. It's music. The covers are almost everytime about ego... to make a show, where they wants to be better, to compare, to copy something they don't understand, etc... 5:25 is nice example what it's music about. Even better in his performance in London watch?v=YrLk4vdY28Q&ob=av2e at 6:00

  • When LC sings this song there is a certain tantric calmness that descends upon you. Any version of this song - sung by him and him only is the superb version. Others are but mere parrats trying to make best of the song. But credit must be given to K.D.Lang who blew the audience away with ehr rendition os this ever so sweet song. Her strong voice with the clarity that befits her was astounding. I am a great fan of Mr. Cohen and at any age he is the supreme song writer, poet and singer

  • sorry

  • OMG He look like Magneto ;-)

  • @gk3mat What??? From the sublime to the ridiculous!

  • @gk3mat I think he looks more like Dustin Hoffman but sings like Michael the Archangel!

  • OMG!!!!! I love the man!!! I hear some peeps in the audience seem to laugh. The laugh is on them.....Damn the man can sing and yes I think he is sexy :) I am older, 47, tell you what this man is SEXY!!! How can you not be with that voice and those WORDS :)

  • Years from now this will be a singer compared to Sinatra and Torme.

    He has class.

  • Halleujah Leohard. Ur the best.

  • This is how the song is supposed to sound, a strong powerful voice, not some post pubescent doing vocal gymnastics with no real talent to speak of.

  • So, when did Mr.Spock change his last name to Cohen?

  • I think that because it is his song he is able to sing it how he wanted it done and therefore gives it different meaning than other artists but people have to admit that without the newer artists singing it Leo's version wouldn't be getting this much attention.

  • but as long as the containers of average palettes throw their change away on "Artists" who at best vaguely point the direction of real music forged from the soul of a poet, there will be no reason for the wasted glittering talents of people who have not and cannot experience life the way even their customers do to ever have anything relevant to sing about.

its a damn shame is what it is.

  • dont like the way he sings it??

ITS HIS SONG. he, and only he, sings it the way its supposed to be sang.

if you would prefer the actual SONG in all its soulful meaning watered down by some irrelevant vocalist whos goal in the first place is simply to show off their ability to create chromatic notes with their mouth.

    theyre jokes.

they havnt realized the simple invention of the piano has rendered them obsolete.

when they do realize, maybe theyll actually have something to sing about.

  • Listen this version too:

    X-Faktor Takács Nikolas (Hallelujah)

    Amazing:)

  • this is the one and only. He is the best.

  • sa musique me donne des frissons,c'est monumentale sa musique, bob Dylan n'a rien inventé

  • I love this song but, i really don´t like the way he sing it...

  • @vostrozlik he's a poet mostly, id say, so he kinda has a mix of spoken word. it gets his point across better than the way it's sung by others

  • @vostrozlik

    It is up to You...

  • @vostrozlik He's not really a singer. He's a poet. The singing came later when the folk movement took over.

  • @vostrozlik I would not agree with you otherwise, except I listened to how he sang it in Helsinki, and that was even better. Perhaps he sang better because people there were more quiet and the background singers sang so softly.and tenderly..

  • this song reminds me of before

  • WOW! What an amazing song!! All though i do like Bon Jovi's cover alot to!

  • LC is a great composer and in his days he was a good performer. There are better sung versions of this. He looks a little like Bogart in his later days.

  • I love Len Cohen.

I just wish poets like him and Dylan would tell us if their lyrics actually mean anything, or if most of their songs are simply nonsensical, stream-of-consciousness non sequiturs.

I am afraid Len will die of old age soon, though.

  • @bosszeroboss

Ill tell you why they dont.

he could have simply wrote lyrics to the effect of "I had sex with this girl. i liked it a lot. she had a nice ass and i had a boner!"

but he didnt, because there was more to it. more beauty, more emotion, and probably didnt involve anyone he could characterize as a prostitute.

listen how he says "hallelujah" in some of the other versions. hes not saying "hallelujah", whatever the hell that means. hes saying "i love you", and not idly. understand?

  • @bosszeroboss

    Die of old age?

Man, he'll live forever, thanks to YouTube, G-d bless the man!

And old as he is, he still moves this woman like some boys never could.

  • amazing song

u can also listen to a wonderfull version

u write -danny budiski and u can listen to is version

  • I want this song played at my funeral!

  • he looks like leonard nimoy

  • krása

  • The original version is always the best. The copycats will always be copycats. Seen so many versions but none close to match Leonard Cohen. Pity there is no new modern version video and audio of him singing this. This is music from the soul.

  • @ferna14227 I know. Some people say that the covers are much better. While Allison Crowe and Jeff Buckley (imo) performed the song extremely well, this is the original. He performs it like it was meant to be performed because he wrote it to begin with, and it is his song through and through.

  • saw Leonard in Sligo - absolutelt the best concert ever. The man is a living legend and played for nearly three hours!! One of a kind - you can keep Jeff Buckley - only Leonard can give this song true meaning and emotion.

  • Is that Joan Osborne singing backup?

  • Le vrai chanteur de cette chanson, c'est lui et pas Jeff Buckley

  • Did any of you spot Enya in the crowd. She's wearing a really bad long blond wig.

You can see her at the bottom of the screen at 2:15 and 6:42. only a quick flash, but Enya a Leonard Cohen fan?.

  • @lenovo70183 Cohen has influenced just as many musicians as Dylan and the Beatles. He is one of the few living Musical legends.

  • @zukoslawa

he is one of the greatest composers <.<

an i feel sorry for your poor dog...

  • Rufus Wainwright does a better job i think :/

  • Why the back vocals are so beauty?

  • Perfect words !

  • He wrote it ...he can sing it ...

    gb

  • play that song at my funeral !!

  • Rufus, KD, Bon Jovi, Lee Dwyze, Shrek, everybody! They should worship the ground this man walks on ! ! !

  • he reminds me of spock xD

  • bravo

  • Wonderful, absolutely wonderful!

  • Incredible simply incredible. Any dumbass who thinks he sucks can go to hell

  • j aime bcp ce chanteur ainsi que cette chanson.

  • God, that voice, that presence, that talent.. .Leo was born too soon for me. One of the few artists whose voice can pluck shivers down my back. Mmm...

  • @zukoslawa A lil more respect for one of the best composers ever plz

  • i saw him twice live on stage, the man is a magician, sexy as hell even at his age, and a real poet - I adore him!!!!!

  • 好啊。深情

  • Leonard Cohen is a genius--and a genius with incredible depths of soul. I also love what the organ adds to this piece.

  • wunderschön LOVEVA

  • i will cry when he dies..

  • @eik35 why not celebrate while he is alive...........?

  • @Collieshamin I do, everyday, listen to his songs, buy his records, but WHEN he dies, i will cry.

  • Magnifique, merci

  • I was there!absolutely A-MAZ-ING!!!!!im going to see him 1st of august this yr cnt wait!!!!!!i bet its gonna be even more A-MAZ-ING!!!!

  • beautiful song, one of the best.........but mr cohen, let others sing it for you please!

  • vocal freshness, vocal technique is one thing but authenticity exists in only one voice, and that is Leonard Cohen's alone

  • great song

  • He's brilliant! Love his songs.

  • ya the people who bash on leonard for his voice... sigh.... dumbass lol thats the point. hes real. and he makes this music. thats his power... duh lol <3 just a guy. he even might think he has ethinicity? but hes a just a man who cares enough to have his heart broken :) Well done sir.

  • tus muertos, ¡cuantas emociones!

  • Wow!

  • hows does this sound? watch?v=w63YiKbL5oI

  • Hey! I was wondering if anyone would like to check out my cover of this song? Thanks so much in advance!<3(:

  • Ditto, brownrevolution, that verse, spoken from a true man, who, like us all, has loved and lost, speaks to all of us... Hallelujah

  • The song really touched my heart.

  • A GREAT Man Singing in a Great City. Beautiful and so lovely city. Cohen has always been a poet. His first known song " Suzanne" was already being sung by Judy Collins when she finally asked him to sing his song. A great man, never looking for fame, a honest man. Thank you Mr Cohen for all these amazing Lyrics and Music. Thanks for posting.

    Malleck.

  • Hallelujah

  • Better listen to the music and see one of the greatest songwriters of our times

    Grüße Rainer

  • @RainerBrueck amen

  • childish comment...

  • jid stfu

  • what happened at 19 seconds? there was a sound and he freaked out a little

  • @IamLouder I think he belched...said at last gig that he was on the wagon but Ireland's the only place he has a few!

  • Now...........he is a poet more than many other songwriters. Always been one of my fav all-time singer!

  • Now this song is best remembered for a sex scene in Watchmen

  • And it should be:

There was a time you let me know

    What's really going on below

But now you never show it to me, do you?

And remember when I moved in you

The holy dove was moving too

And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

    Cohen is the man

  • this has touched my heart

  • i was at that concert absolutley brilliant show amazing band fantastic sound for an out door gig when he sang this it was a very spiritual moment almost religious in fact very moving for a man of his age he could teach the younger ones a thing or two ! as cool as fuck still !

  • Cohen's not a homogenized teched-up American Idol electronic clone. Amen to music that comes from humanity. Amen to music coming back home to the human heart.

  • Others sing better technically. But this has soul like none other can ever touch.

  • @Grensley -He 's the greatest lyricist in the world (among Dylan). And the voice..it makes me laugh and cry at the same time..

  • @Grensley

    Agree...

  • @Grensley

This is the only one I would like to see live

  • Leo Cohen! The First - The One - The Only!!

  • megamusicluv HALLELUJAH

  • while his singing is not that great, compared to other singers, his writing is what sets him out from the rest of singing artists. its amazing, and unlike any i've ever seen

  • That is singing from the heart and nobody else can get close to the song's creator. Rock on, Leonard.

  • atrixi - It's not that his singing is "not that great" it is "HIS" style, listen to some of his other stuff also...Younger people don't get his style - they understand more of the manufactured radio bull that is shoved down everyone's throat now-a-days...Leonard Cohen is a brilliant Singer/Song Writer...

    Cheers : )

  • das schönste lied was ich kenne...einfach nur wunder-wunderschö!das ist musik!!!

  • Great song from a great Quebequer musician! He is from Montréal

  • You're crazy like a fox!

I've told the truth I didn't come all this way just to fool ya

Even though it all went wrong I'll stand right here before the Lord of Song

With nothing, nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

  • I've heard that verse before. I'm not sure where, but maybe on Cohen's original version, which used different verses from later versions.

  • No it's in the original version :P

  • it was so amazing to see him back in dublin again, growing up in with cohen, dylan, saw him a few wks ago at the o2 and again it was a masterful experience, better in fact than IMMA, and also we didnt have to put up with a pack of (like I'm like) fucking bastards who sat behind us at IMMA and talked bolloxologie through the entire gig,

  • i m with you i was at that gig and it was flipping brill but there was too much talking during quiet parts and idiots off to the bar constantly ! by the way bolloxology is great fucking word!

  • amazing voice

  • leonard cohen gets better with age...bravo<
