ok i didnt even know that pickups existed until this morning
but i wanted to get a pick up for my cello instead of an eletric cello
(because pick ups are cheaper) but do you need an amp with the pick up to make it sound like a real electric cello? and do pick ups give your cello an echo setting or do you need an amp for that?
Erik-- I'm interested in getting a clip-on mic for my cello and I loved the sound of that AKG C409. However when I searched it on google it appears they don't make them anymore. Is there a similar mic you would recommend? Thanks~
When using the Audio Technica Pro70 mic, try mounting it with velcro... a smaller foam block glued to a double strip of velcro that sandwiches the strings so that the mic is in foam and the velcro encases the strings like a sandwich. I believe Audio Technica makes a mount like this for archtop & gypsy jazz guitars but you can probably make one for a cello.
i really like how the tuner pickup sounds. Do you make that or do you buy it? what kind of amp do you recomend? I dont have very much money i just want something to play around with
I've been doing some research too an i wonder if you have any idea about the folowing pickups: SHADOW SH NFX 955-C, Shadow SC 1 Cello Transducer and
Schertler Stat C Set Transducer . I'm looking for the ideal pickup for a pop-rock band, kind of like with Damien Rice, that can reach a volume to go over a soft drum without giving any feedback.
I'm not familiar with any of those, though I did play for years on an earlier Schertler pickup--the guy is a real smart sound guy. Let me know what you discover.
I've heard this too and I believe there is some real science behind this belief. My own experience is that I can't really say I've noticed a *huge* improvement in any pickup when using a pre-amp..even a good one. But in a room with an excellent sound system you may hear the improvement.
I'd like to buy a pickup but I don't want to have to keep messing with the bridge (taking it off and back on again) is there a good clip-on pickup that you would suggest? I've been thinking about buying the Barcus Berry 3125 pickup, what do you suggest?
How would you be able to get a good distortion sound out of the cello, like Apocalyptica kinda does? Would a mic or pickups be better? And how would you hook them up?
Do you know how the AKG c516 would compare to the other clip-on microphones you've used? Is the C409 mentioned in the video your number one choice for clip-on microphones today? I need to amplify my cello, but most pickups seem to be either of bad quality or semi-permanent setup. So I'd like to use a clip-on microphone, but I can't seem to find one that's right for me. Any suggestions?
I've never been super happy with the Fishman sound but they do have certain advantages mainly that you can install them without messing around with the "regular" setup of your cello. The Realist is a better sounding pickup.
Hi! It's me again :) Sorry I'm such a bother...I've been doing some research, and I was wondering wether you have tried any of these pickups: the AKG C 411 and the Sennheiser e 608.
They both seem OK. The 411 might sound more like a pickup. on the other hand it's cheaper and seems to have a good Freq. Resp. The 608 seems like it's designed more for wind instruments (brass) or percussion and it's FResp. is a bit narrower. You have to attach the 411 with goop or "adhesive"..never a fav or mine.
OK..have a confused you enough? Sorry, I wish I had some first-hand exp. with these.
You haven't confused me at all, on the contrary! Now I just have to decide between the 411 and the Realist. Thanks for the advice and for the info you provide on your site, which has been really helpful too!
I have also found that its possible attach a pickup very easily with loosening the strings etc..rather than putting the pickup under the bridge foot to insert it in the space between the arms on the middle section of the bridge...very easy to take on and off. Thanks for your escellent postings!!
exoskel (ERIK) I'm from Brazil and I love this musical instrument, its sound is very nice. I have not one but I'll buy one cello (it's my dream) and I want to learn play it. All your lessons are my inspiration. Congratulations Eric and thanks for let us watching them here and free (excuse me my poor English lol)
For a pickup I use a very cheap "captuer" (I play in France)with a Yamaha Magic Stomp acoustic pedal for pre amp and reverb...do you have any suggestions for an effects pedal good for the Cello. Thanks for your postings!
I'm afraid I am a kind of "au natural" guy and don't use any pedals. You might want to check out a great cellist, and fellow countryman, Vincent Courtois who makes good use of effects. -Erik
Not sure what you mean a "transducer" microphone. Can you give me a model number? In any case, any microphone is most likely to be better with a pre-amp and for most uses will be better sounding than a pickup.

Pickup will be much easier and cheaper..pickup, RAT distortion box, amp and you're all set.
