US is the largest producer of oil (15 million barrells/day; Saudi is 9) but US is also the largest consumer of oil (22 mllion/day) and on a net-net basis US imports an extra 7 million/day of which much is imported from Canada, Mexico, some from Venezuela (yes), and around 1million barrels/day from middle-east/Africa mainly from Nigeria and Saudi. For a 22 bbl/day largest consumer, there is lot of bargaining power to dictate price. US consumers, cut back oil by 10%.

The overall message is somewhat consistent with current events, but I don't think things are going to develop the way you have estimated it. The U.S is financially limited, so I doubt how far would it be able to reach out with a full military campaign. This is where NATO comes in. The Iranians are well equipped, but I feel the U.S won't be fighting them alone. Iran is somewhat limited unless China and Russia become involved. Plus, the global economy is very fragile causing oil to take a dive.
